In lieu of our University’s grand opening last week, I thought we’d take time out for some Sephora edification. When I tell people where I work I often get asked to explain the meaning behind the name Sephora. Of course this comes after “Do you get free products?” and then “Can you get me free products?" Well, Sephora is the combination two words—Sephos and Zipporah. Sephos was the term for all things pretty in ancient Greece and Zipporah was the name of Moses’ wife who was renowned for her exceptional gorgeousness. Put the two together and, voila, you’ve got a name historically seeped in beauty. Class is now dismissed. —Jennifer Appenrodt, Sephora
