"The best way to prevent acne is to wash your brushes." - Catherine Marovich, Director of Sephora Brand.
That quote, spoken at a meeting on Wednesday, has haunted me all week. She's totally right (brushes can be a magnet for dust, oils, and bacteria) but when was the last time that I washed mine? Um, I can't remember. As someone who is always one stressful day, one unwashed face, or one hormonal fluctuation away from a fresh new zit, I was stricken by the fact that my brushes, (my secret weapons! my best makeup friends!) could suddenly become the enemy. The skinemy.
Back in my hotel room (I was on a business trip), I tossed and turned, gazing at my (dirty! nasty! infected!) brush set with suspicion and dread. Like former war allies now fighting on opposite sides, in my head our relationship pendulum swayed from symbiotic to parasitic. Each brush more perilous than the last, each brush stroke closer to a breakout. But like an addict, I buffed on, hating myself for smothering my skin with dirt and germs, but loving the way my legion of brushes applies my makeup.
I'm home now, and needless to say, the brushes have been diligently washed. Out, damn spot. And I've purchased two items from Sephora.com to foster my sanitation obsession. Sephora Deluxe Antibacterial Brush Set and Sephora Makeup Brush Cleansing Wipes. The 7 piece brush set (pictured above) contains a non-toxic, hypoallergenic antibacterial agent that repels and attacked bacteria. It's soaked into the bristles, and lasts about 25 washes. i.e. a lifetime. (side note: they are made from synthetic hair, making them a great choice for vegetarians and vegans). The brush wipes are saturated with a quick-drying brush cleaner that removes oil, bacteria and residue from any brush. I'll use these to supplement my monthly washings of my brushes (scrubbed with shampoo, rinsed, then laid on the rim of my--clean--sink to dry. For more on brush cleaning, see here).
A small price to pay to save a beauty-full relationship. And my sanity.

I try to clean my brushes often, but just can't make the time sometimes. I just washed them yesterday and boy does it feel good :)
