Sephora's book author and beauty editor Melissa Schweiger was interviewed in today's NY Daily News. Check it out:
Dr. 90210 be damned. Beauty experts know that all you need are a few magic makeup potions to tweak your face and body to perfection. It's time the rest of us were let in on their secrets. Melissa Schweiger's new glamour glossary, "Sephora: The Ultimate Guide to Makeup, Skin and Hair from the Beauty Authority"- which hits stores April 15 - offers a panel of experts' tips, tricks and cheats to going faux while still appearing au naturel.
1. FAKE EIGHT HOURS OF SLEEP
So you spent the night closing the bar instead of getting your 40 winks. Cover dark circles with a peach-toned concealer, using your pinkie. Apply flesh-colored liner on the inside of the eyelid, which counteracts any redness, and highlight the arch under your brow with a light shadow, which opens the eye immediately. Top with an eyelash curler and a couple of coats of mascara to make tired eyes pop.
2. FAKE HIGH CHEEKBONES Cop chiseled cheeks by dabbing a luminizing liquid over your foundation on the high cheekbone area, to reflect the light. Then apply light-pink blush high on the apples of your cheeks to lift them and give your face a youthful flush. Next, contour the hollows of your cheeks by sucking them in and sweeping them with a taupe powder blush or bronzer that's a couple of shades darker than your skin. Finally, blend the three together for a natural finish. Try: Benefit 10, a pale pink blush and bronzer in one.
3. FAKE MODEL EYEBROWS
Cheat at home with eyebrow stencils to make brows look like they were shaped by a pro. "It's easy to do - sort of like color-by-numbers for your face!" says Schweiger. Place the stencil over your eyebrow and fill in with white or pink shadow, so that it stands out against your natural brow color. Remove the stencil and pluck wherever you don't see shadow, filling in sparse spaces with a pencil or powder. Try: Anastasia All About Brows Kit.
4. FAKE PLUMP LIPS
Get Angelina's perfect pout by applying a lip plumper. "One of my favorites is DuWop Lip Venom," Schweiger says, "but instead of using it as a lip gloss, put it on, wait a few minutes and then wipe it off, so it sort of leaves your lips plump without the shininess." Accentuate with a nude liner and fill in. Then apply sheer layers of color, starting with a stain and adding a sheer lipstick. Top with a shimmering pink, gold or silver gloss on the center of the lower lip.
5. FAKE LONG LEGS
You can skip the self-tanner and apply a shimmering balm to add some length and glam to your gams. Apply before doing your makeup, so that it has time to set and dry while you're fixing your face. "I think the key also is just taking care of your legs," says Schweiger. "It's something that everybody suffers from, so moisturize." Pick up a strong, natural body brush and run it up your legs, around your knees and over your abdomen to boost circulation and eradicate cellulite. Try: Micheal Kors Leg Shine.
6. FAKE A PERFECT TAN
Score a summer glow sans the sun damage. Make sure you shave and exfoliate first, and pat yourself dry. Apply the tanner while wearing disposable gloves, using a quarter-size dollop for each leg. Rub it in until you can't see a trace of self-tanner, then do the same for your arms and chest. "After you take your gloves off, put a little tanner on the backs of your hands, and then rub them together," she suggests. "You don't want white-glove hands." Try: Mystic Tan Perfect Tan Kit.
