Are You Afraid Of The...Light?

I’ve never been a daily sunscreen user. Before you judge me, let me explain the rationale behind this seemingly reckless behavior: I’m in an office all day—how much damage can the sun really do during my 10 minute walk to get lunch? To put it in context, applying mascara has always seemed like more of a daily beauty essential than slathering on the screen.

For all of you who are shaking your head in disbelief as you think ‘oh no she didn’t’, you’ll be happy to know I’ve changed my ways due to a newfound glitch in my theory: The sun is not the only culprit when it comes to skin damage. Dermatologists have been claiming it for years, but now there’s clinical proof that indoor lighting—such as halogen desk lamps, overhead florescent lights, and computer screens—can cause pigmentary changes and wrinkles in skin. The results are not as drastic UVA sun rays, but chronic exposure can lead to murky brown spots and wrinkle lines that increase over time.

As you sit in front of your computer screen reading this right now, I’m guessing you feel pretty vulnerable. Now, before you resort to extreme measures, I want to let you know that you and your new case of light-fright can rest assured: Sephora has sunscreens that give complete, all-around protection. So, even if you work in a dark, musty, windowless cube (bummer), make sure you slather these potions of broad-spectrum lotions on everyday—when it comes to your skin, no where is safe.—Jennifer Appenrodt

Wow! I had no idea indoor lighting can cause pigmentary changes and wrinkles in the skin! What a killer! Thanks for the tip!
