If you're regretting wearing your orthopedic pumps with a 2-inch heel to work today, I thought I'd put your pain in perspective. These pointe shoes with a colossal heel are all the rage in Japan, which comes as no surprise since this culture once embraced foot binding (aka shriveling).
I was feeling guilty about my long-overdue pedicure but, after seeing these shoes, I consider my feet spoiled little brats. I would think that after strutting in those ballerina-gone-bad shoes all day, one should pass on the pampering and get their little piggies straight to the podiatrist!
When it comes to footwear's neverending comfort vs. cute battle, Japan seems to have a 'hurt so good' mentality. After all, tootsies are not for playing footsies, they're for showing off some serious shoewear. - Jennifer Appenrodt

Rarely do I look at high heels and think, "No way." But for these, I'm willing to make an exception!
Japan never practiced foot-binding, that was China.
Shoes like this are not that new, they're actually pretty popular with the s&m/fetish set.
Thanks for your comment! Yes, foot binding began and is historically attached to Chinese culture, but I've also read that the Japanese practiced this ritual as well(popular among geishas, etc...)
I've never heard of these shoes being worn as actual heels in public. Good to know that they've been around longer, just worn behind closed doors. :)
At our Fall catalog shoot yesterday, the hairstylist was wearing Balenciaga's ahhhh-mazing spring "boots" - the black and white braided pair featured in their spring AD campaign ($8000!!!). They were gorg, but seemed a tad teeter-todder--the heels were 4 inch spikes, and about a nanometer thick. I couldn't take my eyes off of them, tho...
I was flipping through People mag's "100 Most Beautiful" (it was research, people), and spotted these shoes on Rumor Willis! 'Course, she wasn't actually standing in them...
