Smooches Divas:
If you know me, you know I don’t just know how to pamper myself – I love pampering myself. Those of you who DON’T know me? I am Monica Mingo, a diva of the t-shirt and pearls variety and I’m serious about keeping my stride stank! I am the beloved wife of The Robinator and I suffer from infertility which makes it necessary for me to take pampering to a whole new level and, my dear sweet friends, I DO!
I was asked to write about my five favorite products from Sephora. Me thinks me can do that with ease as I RAVE about these products on a regular basis.
Phytospecific Moisturizing Styling Balm
If ya girl (um…that would be me) knew she was going to be out of the country for months at a time in some remote backpacking area…I’d irritate everyone by having a knapsack full of this product. Food? pi-shaw! Water? pi-shaw! Medicine my doctor says I need to live? pi-shaw! Who wants to live with their hair a mess? NOT ME! My knapsack would be filled with this product and I’d rely on the natives to feed me. Hey. I’m cute. Being cute goes a long, long way.
RX for Brown Skin Bright and Even Exfoliating Moisturizer
This product makes me gloooow! It is the best moisturizer for my skin that I have ever, EVER used! It makes me soooooo happy that when I’m applying it in the morning and at night, smiling softly at myself, I have to fight back the temptation to blow me a kiss and wink. (Okay…so sometimes I go with the feeling…sue me.) This product is perfect for me!
In fact, before a major trip recently, the Sephora I frequent was out of this. So? I drove to the next state to get it. There was NO WAY I was going out of the country without it. No way in East Hades. I wasn’t happy until I was clutching my product in my claws and shoving it in my purse. The only thing that could make me love this product more is if they added an SPF of 15. I’ve been a fan of Dr. Susan Taylor’s since she published her book, “Brown Skin” which I consider a necessary reference in my home.
Phytospecific Intense Nutrition Mask
As a moisturizing necessity…it doesn’t get any better than this for me. I’m pretty serious about my hair and have an aversion to what I call crunchy hair. Just…ewwwwwww! This conditioner is my first defense against dry hair breakage. If you have frizzy, naturally curly, relaxed or dry hair…this product is for you. I can’t tell you how many people I have introduced to this product from all skin colors who decided they LOVED it on their hair! I love the way my hair feels after I rinse it and I love knowing that this product was created by scientists focusing on frizzy, naturally curly, relaxed and dry hair.
L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream
I’m never without a tube of this cream. I keep one in my bag, one on my nightstand and one in my office. I hardly ever have to get manicures because I use this hand cream every single time after I've washed my hands, therefore, no dry cuticles! See? Buying this product actually saves me money. (That’s for the husband’s benefit. Everyone else…just skip on by.)
Diorshow Mascara
The Sephora I frequent is in Montgomery Mall in Bethesda, Maryland. My guy, whom I affectionately call Makeup Mark, is usually right about 95% of the time with his suggestions for me. (We won’t talk about the other 5%. I mean hey…does it REALLY matter if I didn’t use the spider leg fake eyelashes? )
Because I trust Makeup Mark to get it right for me, when he suggested this mascara I bought it without blinking. When I tried it on at home I got mad at him. Why the heck hadn’t he pointed this lovely mascara out to me before???
This mascara makes me feel like an old Hollywood starlet. Like I should be wrapped in a long luxurious robe with shoulder pads and a corset choking the life outta me so I can do that tiny waistline thingy (how did they do that?), gliding around my home, talking to myself and touching art on the walls as if I’m living large (because that’s how I imagine living large to be like: Gliding, delicately touching art in appreciation, and batting around my fabulously lush lashes).
And now, attention Sephora: Please, please, PLEASE make sure that there is something for everyone in the Beauty Insider giveaways okay? I, along with lots other women, would enjoy getting offered a freebie that we could actually use.
[Editor’s note: We first discovered Monica through a blog post addressed to us discussing the need for more Beauty Insider giveaways for every skin type, color, and stage. We’re happy to say that she’s right - this month we're dishing out Dr. Brandt's Microdermabrasion testers because hey, every guy & gal could use sparkling skin, right? Stay tuned for more!]
Alrighty now. Those are my top five. I could have done my top twenty-five but hey…
Question…do YOU use any of my five? What’s your take on them?
Wishing you love and light,
Monica Mingo

I'll have to try that moisturizer. I have MAJOR hyperpigmentation issues. My nearest Sephora is in Perimeter mall in Atlanta. I think I'll stop by there today and check it out.
I love Sephora. It's my favorite beauty spot.
My top five Sephora favorites are:
Phyto Jojoba Shampoo
Phyto Jojoba Mask
Too Faced Absolutely Invisible Translucent Powder
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Nars Taj Mahal Blush
I love the Rx for Brown Skin moisturizer as well. When I read about the products in a magazine my interest was piqued and after I read how you said it made you glow after only using the 3 day trial I thought I've gotta try it and I have to say you were so right!!!!
I am a Phytospecific Junkie myself. I have noticed great results since I started using the products back in December.
I second your opinions on the Beauty Insider!
Go Monica Mingo!!!! :-) Just had to say that. I'll check out these products the next time I go to Sephora.
Love all of the products you've selected! I totally agree regarding the Beauty Insider!
Go on with ya bad self Mrs. Mingo! You are doin-t it! I will have to check some of these out the next time I happen to be near a Sephora store.
Anything by Carol's Daughter!
I'm scared of getting foundation/concealer from Sephora so if you could please court Iman that would be awesome :)
I use the Phytospecific products and I've used the Rx for Brown Skin moisturizer before. I'm heading to Sephora this week to stock up on my supplies. Excellent post, Monnie!
Usually I'm a Philosophy girl, and love all their products EXCEPT Pigment of Your Imagination. It did nothing for my hyperpigmentation problem. Can't wait to try the Dr. Brown product to see if I get better results. Thank's Monica!
I love Sephora and thanks for the suggestion on the Rx for Brown Skin moisturizer.... I am going to try tht and the Phyto Jojoba Mask... my hair has been going through a funky stage lately so I need to try something new :)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will mos def try the RX for Brown Skin Bright and Even Exfoliating Moisturizer.
Thanks for your list of favorites. I purchase my carol's daughter products from Sephora. But I have also found another favorite product, "tend skin." It has really helped the inflammation, redness, and bumps from hair removal. Next, I want to try the phyto products.
I haven't used any of the five listed. But I have a friend that loves that brand of hand cream.
I frequent Sephora for my Philosophy facial exfoliant, Carol's Daughter products and Bliss body scrub.
Hey Monica Mingo,
You are a classic LADY ! I love your picks. The Shea Hand Cream is a MUST HAVE for me. I'm going to purchase the Exfoliating Moisturizer just because you recommended it!
My Top Products
Korres Guava Body Butter
Korres Guava Shower Gel
Ojon Hydrating Stlying Cream
Nars Mini Monoï Body Glow And Body Glow II Set
I love your tips. I have yet to try the RX for Brown Skin products at Sephora but am looking forward to. I am very happy to see a product specifically made for Brown Skin :)
Hopefully, we will see more products for women of all skintones in the future.
Going to Sephora is like going to the playground for me. My favorite products are:
Nars Blush in LoveJoy and Exhibit A
Nars eyeshadow in Night Clubbing
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Sephora Gloss Lipstick in 27 (perfect pinky neutral for this brown girl)
and any number of the perfumes I've purchased over the years.
I was so excited to see Sephora's partnership with Carol's Daughter and doubly excited that they offered the opportunity to meet Ms. Price and Dr. Taylor.
Oftentimes, women of color are an afterthought among makeup companies and retailers. Sephora has an excellent opportunity to continue the strides it has made to address these issues and become the leader of the pack for women (and men) of all shades.
I'm going to try that moisturizer and see if it can help my dark spots. My favorite from Sephora is the La Vanila perfume - yum! We don't a Sephora in MS, but frequent trips home and the internet make up for that.
Phytospecific Intense Nutrition Mask is the TRUTH!!! Thanks Monnie for introducing me to this back in Nov.. I didn't use it until December and ran out to my Sephora in Columbia, MD and purchased.. they were out of the shampoo and gave me samples until my order arrived!!! Love it and it has made a HUGE difference in my hair and my daughter's hair. I'll be sure to check out the other fave's you mentioned..
Regarding the beauty insider.. I agree.. I have yet to get something in my order that I was able to use..
That Shea butter hand cream is the truth!
Thanks Monica, love your suggested products.
I, too am a big Phytospecific product user, as well as the Rx for Brown Skin line - especially the moisturizer.
I'll have to try the shea butter for hands! All of the products you describe sounds wonderful - I need to veture into my local Sephora (Stonebriar Mall, Frisco, Texas) the next time I am out and baout!
Sephora, you guys picked the perfect guest blogger. I'm always on monicamingo.com scrounging around for beauty tips. I am a definite fan of the PhytoSpecific line. I also will add the Philosophy line as another one of my favorites; I love their Make-Up Optional line.
Like others I would love, love, love if Beauty Insiders had more products applicable for women of all skin tones in the future.
I want to try the Rx for Brown Skin and also the shea butter hand cream.
Thanks for sharing your top five with us!
Thanks for sharing your top five! I want to try that moisturizer!!
I'll definitely be trying these faves by Friday.
I'll definitely be trying these faves by Friday.
RX for Brown Skin is fabulous, and their sample kits are perfectly sized for travel.
I'm like a kid in a candy shop when I go to Sephora. L'Occitane almond shower oil, Fresh brown sugar body polish, Philosophy pure grace, and PhytoSpecific are my all time, can't live without favorites!
I heart Sephora - they feed my product and make-up addiction! I look forward to more useful insider gifts.
Hey Monica! I may have to go out and get me some Sephora stuff now, you've piqued my interest!
One of the best big sisters ever! So proud to see you sharing your secrets on Sephora!
I am definitely going to check out the Phyto line...plus I swung by the bookstore to pick up Dr. Taylor's book!
I will be placing an order soon. Thanks for the tips Monica.
I've been looking to try a new mascara for a while. Thanks for the heads up!
Also, I'm a Phyto convert. Thanks for the heads up!
Forgot my favs:
Bare Minerals Foundation in Tan
The Smokey Eye Kit
Zirh Products for the husband
I didn't even know Sephora sold more than make-up & perfume -until I started reading your site Monica! I popped in recently and was amazed at the selection of beauty essentials. I picked up Carol's Daughter Hair Honey (which I love! It smells great & adds shine) and the Ojon Restorative Treatment (jury's still out on that one).
I'll definitely be going back to try the Phyto line, as I've hear such great reviews about it from Monica & the tribe :)
I am not a beauty product junky, but I do frequent Sephora for the Phytospecific line of hair care products. Monnie turned me on to that line a little over a year ago and I fell in love!! I also love the RX for Brown skin moisturizer as well.
I am going to put the Dior Show Mascara on my list to try next.
Great job Monnie!!
Tsiporah
Believe it or not, I have never purchased a single thing from Sephora. I'm going this Thursday based on your recommendations alone.
I will look into that hair mask, I am currently transitioning so my hair stays thirsty!!!!
I've read a lot about Rx for Brown Skin, but don't know anyone to use it. I will add it to my long list of product to try!
My necessary Sephora buy is Urban Decay's Primer Potion. A.MUST.HAVE!
I fell in love with Sephora while visiting Houston a while back.
I'll have to try the RX for Brown Skin moisturizer.
I was just discussing (with a salesperson @ Sephora) the need for a more diverse selection of Beauty Insider gifts.
Great post Monica!
I've never tried Sephora before, they always seemed so expensive, but after checking out your fave 5's, they're no more expensive then what I've been using.
I think I'll check out the RX for Brown skin and the hand cream you suggested. Great Post - Thanks for your fabulous 5, I've already found a few other items I'd like to get as well...
Moni so good to see you guest blogging over here!! YAY!!!
I gotta try RX for Brown Skin now!
You had me at exfoliate!! ;op Haha!
Kewl how Sephora found you!
Hey, Monnie! Love your top five. I'm a PhytoSpecific convert and I truly love this product. I thought my hair was Fabulous before, but now!?! The Mr. can't keep his hand out of it! LOL It's glowing and flowing, baby! ;-)
I love Sephora! I was NOT a make-up girl. I always did the au natural look and would wear lipgloss only. Well, I went to Sephora for my bday in April for some advice on make up and was treated very well by the employees! I now have a handle on how to apply make up and even though I don't wear it all the time, it's more than I did before! I'm loving it, too! I use the Lorac line of products.
I just received the RX for Brown Skin Bright and Even Regimen Set I ordered, and I'm looking forward to using them. I've heard great things about the line, so I'll let you know how that goes.
Thanks for sharing your top five!
Hey Monnie. Thanks for sharing your Five Faves. The Rx for Brown Skin moisturizer has sparked my interest. I need to give this a try.
I've been wanting to try the Rx for Brown Skin line for a while now. It was good to hear some of the feedback. I will probably go ahead and order the sample kit Sissy suggested - first. I wish the products were carried in my local Sephora (Kenwood Mall - Cincinnati) versus only being able to order them online...ditto for Carol's Daughter. There are only a few from that line available in the store. I am also curious about the hair mask now for my frizzies. Think I'll try that, too.
I usually only purchase my perfume, the occasional set of false eyelashes, and some of my eyeshadows form Sephora. I'm sure I'd purchase a lot more if it were availabe in-store vs online only.
Thanks for the post, Monnie!
Hey Monnie,
I love Sephora; the nearest one to me is in Arundel Mills Mall. My top five Sephora favorites are:
Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel
Carol's Daughter Hair Milk
Phytojoba Gentle Regulating Milk Shampoo
Parfum (I think I have most of them) and phyto sesame conditioner.
@Angela: That was in poor taste. Why would you post some other site in the comments on SEPHORA'S site? I mean really!
I hope this blog's administrator deletes that mess cuz that made no sense at all that you felt it appropriate to do so. I mean...REALLY!
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......
I have the phytospefic products. I do love them. They are great for relaxed hair.
I have to investigate that moisturizer though.
Dh thanks you in advance, I'm sure, for the hit to the wallet! ;)
I'm going to try the Rx for brown skin. I have hyperpigmentation and am not completely satisfied with what i have been using.
I do tend to order from Sephora from time to time (there isn't a store in my area.) It's a little annoying when I go to select samples most of the time it's never anything I would use.
Love love love phytospecific and sephora. Have to try that moisturizer you're raving about...
Thank you so much for this blog! As an African American woman, I cherish these recommendations. I too am a Beauty Insider and rarely are the freebies anything I can actually use. I am going to purchase that hand cream and RX for Brown Skin moisturizer. Thank you and I hope you'll be a regular Sephora blogger. We need you!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the Phytospecific balm. Like the L'Occitane hand cream too. Second the Beauty Insider recommendation ... you GO Ms. Mingo!
I have been trying to find the RX for Brown Skin in Florida. It's tough!
