ASK ADRIENNE: Sephora's Skinsation Spills Her Secrets

With so many skincare products out there, it often feels like there’s a potion for every pore. Staring at shelves and shelves of pots, sticks, and tubes (each claiming to contain a fairy-tale formula!), it can be overwhelming. Since skincare is such a sensitive and specific beauty category, it requires an expert’s attention—a well-traveled explorer in the world of dermal topography.

It is my pleasure to introduce Adrienne Davis, Brand Marketing Manager for the Sephora skincare department. Working all day with our products and brands, Adrienne’s got skincare down to a science, and her gleaming complexion reveals she practices what she preaches. With each posting, our skincare superstar will put various categories in a nutshell and offer up some tips, tricks, and product dish. -Jennifer Appenrodt

This week, it’s all about the SPF…(fitting, since Adrienne is the mastermind behind the oh-so-popular Sephora Sun Safety Kit.)

Adrienne says: “I can recommend creams and serums galore, but when it comes to aging, the best cure is PREVENTION. Sunscreen is the most important thing you can wear, every single day…for the rest of your life.

It is easier than ever to incorporate sunscreen into your daily beauty routine. Many brands are adding SPF into their best selling products; from lip balms to primers and moisturizers. Be sure to look for a broad-spectrum version (one that protects from both UVA and UVB rays) with a SPF factor of at least 15. These are just 5 of some of my personal favorites and there are lots of other great ones, too. You can ask any skincare expert at any of our stores to help you select the right SPF product for your needs. They will even make a sample for you if you want to try it first.

Remember, if you are going to be subjecting your skin to a lot of sun, be sure to use enough and reapply often. Sunburns aren’t sexy!!!”

PTR Instant Mineral SPF 30 : This is a great option for anyone with really sensitive skin or someone who doesn’t like the way sunscreen feels on their face. Brush it on right over your makeup for an airbrushed look (with protection!). It’s so easy to reapply throughout the day with its flow-through brush design and you really can take it anywhere because of its powder consistency (no airport security restrictions).

Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 : This stuff smells so amazing and feels so great on my lips! Lips are the second most common place to get skin cancer (noses are also at high risk!), so it’s very important to keep them protected.

Caudalie Vinoperfect Day Perfecting Cream SPF15 : I use this every day to keep my skin protected from free radical damage and to ward off the harmful rays of the sun. Plus, it brightens my under eye area where I am starting to (eek!) see some brown spots…probably from all those years of frying myself when I was younger—ignorance is bliss until it hits you in the face (literally).

Juice Beauty Green Apple Antioxidant Body Moisturizer SPF 20: We all seem so preoccupied with our faces and how they will look when we get older. Don’t neglect the rest of your body!! I am in love with this daily moisturizer for the body. It is super hydrating, and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. The added benefit of an SPF is great because I don’t always want to layer on an additional sunscreen if I am just going to the office (and not the beach—unfortunate as that may sound).

Cosmedicine Global Health UVA/UVB SPF 30 Sunscreen : For when I am active outdoors (which I try to do as much as possible!), at the beach, playing golf, going for a run, or say on a rafting trip with my friends… I always bring Cosmedicine Global Health (face and body). This stuff is amazing! It’s anhydrous (meaning it contains zero water) and it is scientifically proven that it CAN’T “move” or run in your eyes, so no stinging or burning! It won’t sweat off and it is completely waterproof.

Do you have any SPF concerns or questions for Adrienne? I’m unleashing her expertise to the masses—Take Advantage!!

Adrienne Davis is truly a skin care guru.

I am 30 years old, have a very fair complexion, and recently had been experiencing oily skin. I also am in the sun daily.

Adrienne recommended I try Cosmedicine Medi-Matte Oil Control Lotion SPF 20. I have been using it in the morning for the last 10 days and have noticed a huge difference. I am not oily/shiny come lunchtime.

Thanks Adrienne, you are amazing!!!

I use a SPF 30 moisturizer every day, and don't put any additional sunscreen on my face as the day goes on. Am i getting enough protection?

Adrienne -
I use SPF daily and even break out the big guns when at the pool. However, I still freckle. It seems my pale skin just becomes polka-dotted with no color. Can this be? And if so, how to prevent?
p.s. - Thanks for bringing SPF back in fashion. Mum had malig melanoma 2x already. I cannot stress the importance of protection.

I have tried several moisturizers with SPF but they never feel as if they penetrate. Maybe I'll try the PTR with SPF30 and see how that works! Thanks for the recommendation, Adrienne!

I am 31 years old and until recently (the last few years) I did not even wear sunscreen. I know, I know...but then Adrienne came along and well, that changed. I am addicted to Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15. I also love Bliss Sunban Lotion - Face. Its oil-free, SPF 30+ sunscreen for your face and neck. It smells good too!

I've heard so much good stuff about Fresh Sugar Lip treatment SPF 15, I'm going to have to add it to my next order. I really like the Fresh Sugar lip glosses.

What sunscreen would you recommend for the face to prevent breakouts?

Adrienne has the most beautiful skin I have ever seen! (Several of her close friends are right behind!) I can't wait to see what else she recommends! I have already tried a couple of the products listed here and with my sensitive skin I know I will be trying the couple that I haven't!
Thanks, Adrienne, for starting this much needed blog!!

Brittany,
It is always a good idea to reapply sunscreen throughout the day (whether you are outside or not). After several hours, your spf can loose its efficacy. My advice is to apply a powder throughout the day(such as the Peter Thomas Roth Instant Mineral SPF 30). You can even touch up with a powder foundation that contains SPF 15 (such as bare escentuals id bare minerals foundation).
Hope that helps!

Kerry D,
If your mom has already been diagnosed TWICE with malignant melanoma, then maybe you should take that as a warning and stay out of the sun!?!
If you are going to be outside during the hours of 10am to 4pm (when the sun is at its strongest), wear a hat and stay in the shade (and keep reapplying the SPF).
It doesn't sound like your skin has the ability to "tan". People with fair skin and hair are sometimes prone to a hereditary melanin deficiency which triggers skin to react when exposed to UV-B light, causing the skin to "freckle".
However, turning "pink" is an idication that you are burning your skin.
You don't have to be pasty though. If you really like a tanned look, try some of the new and improved self tanning products out there. They can give you the feeling of having a bronzed glow without the dangerous side effects.
My personal faves are Clarins Instant Self Tanning Gel and the new Mystic Tan products.
Have fun and stay safe this summer!

Jasmine,
Some sunscreens can feel a little greasy or can leave the skin feeling weighed down. If you have blemishes and are affraid of how sunscreen will feel on your face (or worse, that by applying SPF you will seemingly get more breakouts) then don't fear! There are tons of products out there that are great for poeple with oily and/or blemish prone skin.
Cosmedicine Medi-matte oil control lotion SPF20 is great at reducing shine while protecting your skin.
DDF Ultralite Moisturizing Dew SPF 15 is a great light weight hydrator that won't clog your pores.
Dermadoctor makes a great SPF that contains willow bark (a clarifying agent) it is called Ain't Misbehavin' Skin Clarifying & Mattifying Sunscreen SPF 30.
Stay clear and protected!
