Beauty blogger Temptalia posed an interesting question yesterday: Has a beauty product changed your life?
That's a good question. My life apparently gets changed every time a new product comes out. I've got the attention span of a gnat, but the makeup bag of a special effects artist.
Blotting paper, dry shampoo, cheek stains, tweezers, formulas with salicylic acid (I love you Zaparella!)...I give everything a fair shot at changing my routine.
If I really really really really had to pick? Palettes. My first was an Elizabeth Arden blow out that included 13 shadows I loved, 18 I hated, 6 pots of lipstick I wore (despite 2 being so sallow it looked like I was ready to jazz up the carpet with recently-eaten lunch), plus a tray containing my very first bronzer.
Why, out of everything, do I pick a palette that wasn't even designed for my skin tone? Because it encouraged experimentation, helped me find my colors, and more importantly, introduced the big world of makeup to a girl stuck buying lip-smackers, glosses, and timid shades of overly-pink blush.

These big palettes always seem like a good idea, but 1) you never use all the colors and 2) they get gross fast.
I rarely order these blockbuster palettes, but this one was too good to pass up. what I plan to do is store mine in a ziplock bag and put it in the fridge. that way, any moist component i.e. lipsticks, glosses, cream blushes or highlighters will stay stable. and if I need a color for the times my friends ask for a makeup application, I have every color for every complexion. some I'll probably use myself and some I won't. but I've got them all there, if I need them.
and of course, these palettes are awesome for travel.
