Bad Trend Alert: Hammer Pants

Spotted at a legitimate market in Albufeira, Portugal: Pants you should never, under any circumstance, wear.

Though they go by the updated, trendier moniker of harem pants, don't be fooled: These are 1987's Hammer pants (and 1982's parachute pants), only with less flashier fabric.

I'm all for roomy pants, clothes that eliminate VPL, and giving old trends a second shot. But when we're talking about a trend that provokes reactions mixed with horror, fear, and confusion, ...don't be surprised if, after wearing these, you find a "Kick me...if you can find my bum" sign taped to the back.

At first, I was upset about the hammer pants making a comeback. I was around the first time and they looked stupid then. But now that I'm older and more practical, hammer pants just might be a blessing. For example, you could retro-fit your pants with inner pockets. Imagine all of the smuggling you could get away with? You'd never have to use a giant purse at movie theaters because your Milkduds would be safetly stored somewhere between your nether-regions and your knees and no one would know. SO- yay, hammer pants. Just don't expect me to start practicing the running man.

I was horrified to see an article in our Toronto Star about the new style in jeans which are apparently now called harem jeans. The first time around in 82, they were called parachute pants. Then in 87, Hammer pants. I don't care what you call them, they are a fashion disaster for anyone with the exception of stick figure models, TV/Film stars and smugglers.

I bought into this style the first time around and spent $65.00 on them. It wasn't until I saw myself in my friend's wardrobe tri-mirror that I realized how bad I looked. The next day I gave my pants to Goodwill.

i actually bought a pair of these last time i was in india and theyre really cute! they look like normal pants only more 'jasmine' like... and everyone that saw them loved them. maybe its the material of mine (the stretchy cotton of undershirts) and the black color or the cute pleated design idk lol
