What is the best way to create the "cat eye" look without looking to made up?

Dear Rachel,

You have posed an interesting question. Cat eye makeup is typically not done when someone has fears about looking too made up.

So, my advice to you, get the benefit of the look by toning it down. Instead of using the liquid or gel liners that ladies from decades past and a certain rocker with a penchant for trouble use, try a powder or a pencil. If your skin is fair, a medium to dark brown shade will give you subtle drama whereas black would pop and attract attention. If your skin is deeper, try the black or smoke gray. If you are going for the very soft look and opt for the powder, apply it with an angle brush.

To apply, start at the inner corner of your eye. Lay the pencil (gel or liquid for you bolder gals) on your lash line and slowly it drag toward the outer corner of your eye. On the first round, keep your line as close to the lashes as possible-we can thicken it later.

As you round toward the outer edge, flick the line up slightly toward your temple. Ta da!

Now, thicken and make the line as bold as you would like.

To keep it subtle, keep the line thin and don't extend too far beyond the outer corner of the eye. But Rachel, I want you to go for it! Cat eye makeup is in. Do a few days toned down to ease yourself in, then get the gel. Life is too short not to go all the way. Trust me, it's time to be bold.
