Train Spotting: PDP (Public Displays of Primping)

It's not like public grooming is a new theme in the blogosphere. In fact, the ladies at Lucky have touched upon the subj. and the girls at Glamour's beauty closet have talked about it on more than one occasion.

But I saw something the other day that made me think—hmm. A girl was expertly balancing a shadow-quad mirrored compact while simultaneously pumping a tube of mascara and rimming her lashes with dark liner. She continued to spackle and perfect her look once the train arrived. The result was a pretty and perfect face. Now, I'm not one to get all ickers by someone putting on a little powder and gloss, but it got me thinking: Is it better to primp in public or leave the house sans makeup for a day?

I guess if you really need to finish getting ready, you can - but if your doing it in a public place, than you should limit yourself to what you use for the day. Like, just use some sort of concealer/foundation, and mascara, and that's it.

ohhh and I also wanted to say; I would be so afraid to put liner on while I was on a moving train, esp. if I am lining the inner part of my eyelid - yikes!

I read somewhere that it's not good etiquette to primp in public. So I either dash into my work's restroom to do the deed or just go sans makeup if I don't have time. But I'm at the age where I MUST leave the house with at least my foundation and powder on that I set the alarm earlier. ;o)

I do think public primping is lacking class...

I so don't get the concept of leaving the house without your makeup already applied. I have a co-worker who waits until about an hour after she gets to work to head off to the bathroom to apply her makeup. Heck, if we've already seen your bare face, why fix it up? If I leave home without at least a little makeup on, I'm probably going to the hospital. In an ambulance.

I've got no prob with putting on lipstick or gloss in public. Hey- I even think some women look sexy doing it. Much more than that though gets too personal.

Mascara and eyeliner in a moving vehicle, whether you're the one driving or not... Eek! I'm on the fence about whether it's classy or not, but I'm always scared of someone poking their eyes out. Just the other day, I was on pins and needles watching a woman doing her mascara on the train. And why it took her 10+ minutes to do it is beyond me. ... And she had one of those wands that look like tiny combs. Each time the train jolted... Eeee!!!

I say public grooming only in a pinch...we've all been there. But for the most part, it's better to look fab before you walk out the door in my opinion.

I sometimes apply lipstick after a meal at table, but stares from men as I do it makes me want to never do this again outside of a restroom.
so no, I don't think you should primp in public. I also couldn't leave the house without my makeup on- I can't have the same results as at home with all my lovely Sephora brushes. unless I don't feel like wearing makeup that day, in which case a quick swipe of concealer, an eyelash curl, and a bit of gloss takes perhaps five minutes. [and under it all- sunscreen of course!]
makeup is one of our "secret weapons" as women, so why not keep the mystery in it?

I completely agree with all the commenters above. I also ride the train, and see the same people day after day performing their makeup routine. It is beyond me why these people cannot do this in the comfort of their own home, like I do. It's tacky and very weird to watch someone do something very personal in a very public place. Just like PDA I don't want to see this two feet front of my face. Keep it at home people!!

I have an hour drive to work if I put my makeup on before I leave my house. So now I put it on in the parking lot where I work and it only takes 30 minutes to get there as I don't get stuck in rush hour traffic. I just can't get up any earlier than 6:00 am.

I'm fascinated by the coworker who is putting on her face an hour after getting to work. That makes even less sense than dolling up on a moving train!
