Yesterday, we took a backwards stroll through 2008. We're over that bout of nostalgia now, though: Today, it's all about the trends you'll see in 2009.

Double Duty Foundation
2009 is flushing one-trick foundation down the commode with makeup that does more. Think foundation that heals, conceals, hydrates, even reverses aging. These aren't just moisturizing or oil-free formulas, either: Watch for makeup that comes with clinical trials showing exactly how much prettier it'll make you. Our first contender of the year, Smashbox's Halo powder, claims to reduce the appearance of wrinkles 33% now...and 67% after 6 weeks of use. Keep watch for brands like Dior and tarte to launch their own miracles in a tube.

Color Bazaar
Kiss those dark winter shades bye-bye, and say hello, gorgeous! to new hues inspired by Morocco and India. Colorful, bright, and deeply saturated, classic reds and dark navys are about to get traded in for hot pink, bright coral, and 24 karat gold.

Girls With Pearls
The hottest new ingredient: Mother of pearl. It's showing up in everything from mascara to lip gloss to eyeshadow. Apart from the obvious shimmer factor, mother of pearl is a natural ingredient that's not just easy on skin, but has beneficial properties thanks to its high mineral content. It's hardly a new find; in China and Japan, mother of pearl powder is used as a natural remedy to maintain the appearance of youthful skin. Still, it's about to get stirred in to a number of mainstream beauty products in 2009...and our skin can't wait.

Natural Splendor
2008 was a good year for natural and organic beauty as more and more brands went natural, or found more sustainable ways to produce the pretty. In 2009, though, green is going for the glamour factor. Natural is getting a makeover next year with bolder colors and better formulas that'll rival the runway brands - proving that organic does not have to mean blahs n' browns.
