Beauty Newbie: A Learner's Guide To Glam

Hi. My name's Bo.

When I got hired as a copy editor at Sephora, most of my friends laughed. I admit, Sephora and I were an unlikely pairing. I’m the one friends always want to make over and whose own mother even begs for her to wear “just a little makeup.” A couple of weeks ago, right before a wedding, my friend Debbie took one look at my sorry attempt to apply makeup, and as she whipped out her makeup and tools with an expert hand to fix it, she said, “Get it together already! You work at Sephora now!”

And it hit me. Yes, I work at Sephora now! In fact, my plain-Jane inclinations have already started to succumb to my new environment. I recently have found myself haunting Sephora stores after work, looking timidly at the different shades of glosses and blushes, eyeing the wide range of foundations and moisturizers, and wondering if it will ever be possible for me to apply eye makeup correctly. Sadly, I always leave empty-handed, too overwhelmed in knowing where to start.

So, that brings me here, to the blog! It’s time to face my fears. I decided to share my explorations in beauty with the hope of encouraging fellow makeup rookies, while gaining a LOT of guidance from all you gurus out there. Plus, there will be fun treats along the way. So, stay tuned!

And please, be gentle to this beauty newbie.

Bo, welcome to the wonderful world of makeup! It's fun. I'm the girliest tomboy I know and it took me a while, but once I discovered how much FUN makeup is, I haven't regretted the loss of sleep to make sure I'm appropriately made up before I leave my apartment. I've also taken to giving mental makeovers to ladies who are just not playing up their good features as much.

Welcome! I'm sure you'll enjoy the journey!

I totally know where you come from (I was there not too long ago), and I just have one word for you: YouTube. There are a plethora of makeup tutorials on YouTube, and they have totally helped me get over my fear of makeup. Here are some of my favorites:

Scandalous Beauty
Panacea81
Xteeener

These gals are extremely personable and break everything down for you. They really show you how much fun you can have with makeup. Good luck!

Hi Bo! Best of luck to you! Trust me when I say you are in good hands (Sephora's that is).

I just recently discovered Sephora in August, and was also overwhelmed. However, like Jeanne says, youtube! And also, attend many Sephora events! every line and artists from those lines have different tips; you'll find some that work for you, and some that don't. I'm still in the learning process. Hey, if you learn anything useful, throw it my way! ;]

Hey there Plain Jane,
What can I say, some people are born glamorous (we'll call them the Danielles of the world) and the rest of us Plain Janes need to learn the tricks of the trade. I too need some fresh ideas, so I can't wait to see what people suggest. I love the youtube tip. Keep them coming!

I still remember when I walked into my first Sephora in Manhattan. It was also my first time visiting NYC. OMG I was in love. Welcome to the world of beatuty and makeup and all things, well, beaituful! You'll do fine and soon enough you'll be as obsessed as the rest of us. Trial and error is how most of us learned and as far as I'm concerned you can always learn something new from someone!
Can't wait to hear about what you find and learn! :)

Hi Bo! Don’t despair. As you seem to be realizing, it is important to always look your best. I find that if you follow just a few beauty rules as a habit you can make sure to always have a finished look (because you never know…). Rule 1: Always blow dry and style your hair. Rule 2: Groom and train your eyebrows. Brush them upwards every night and keep them looking natural and nicely shaped. Rule 3: Never forget to wear earrings. I know this one doesn’t really apply to make-up, but it is an important lesson my mother taught me long ago and really does make me feel better. I’ve gone a bit minimalist with the make-up in the last couple of years (light foundation, a little powder, mascara), but my good friend told me I shouldn’t totally do away with the shadow and lipstick!
