Last week, I wrote about my quest for perfect red lips. I loved the Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 (super moisturizing) that Sara used to prime my lips and the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil – my perfect red, indeed!
Next, Sara took a little brush and dabbed concealer around the edges of my mouth for a precise finish. As she did, I fretted aloud about whether my chapped lips would eventually ruin the look. She told me, “If your lips get dry after a while, just mix a little of your lip balm with the lipstick, and apply it with a brush. It will take away any flakiness.” (Luckily, I now have my Fresh Sugar!)
We finished the look with Nars Lip Gloss in Rose. When applying gloss over matte lip color, you just need to put a little on the center of both your lips, and it will spread out.
Sara asked if I knew the trick to avoiding lipstick on teeth. This was one tip I did know: You close your lips around your index finger and pull it out to remove the excess lipstick. Unfortunately, I still managed to mangle this one up. After I had assured her I knew what to do, Sara handed me a tissue (which confused me) and looked away for a second, only to turn back in time to stop me from putting my now tissue-wrapped finger in my mouth. “The tissue is just to wipe the lipstick from your finger afterwards,” she said kindly.
All embarrassment aside, I don’t think I have ever been this excited about lipstick. Sara said, “Red is always a showstopper, especially when you don’t usually wear it.” And she was right! A woman stopped me right outside the Sephora store and told me she loved the color. And as I walked 8 blocks back to the office, two different guys chatted me up (which, trust me, never happens!).
As for New Year’s Eve, I did muster up the nerve to try out the red. And my lips looked fantastic – for about an hour. I have to admit that I thought I could get away without wearing lip liner. But as Sara predicted, the color bled a bit and did not last long at all. Note to self: Always listen to Sara!
So instead of a picture from New Year’s Eve, I’m posting one of me three hours after Sara had applied the lipstick. That day, the color remained for hours even without any touch ups!
Next up for me: picking out an everyday lip color. Any suggestions?

love the red!!! looks beautiful! I can see why 2 guys stopped you on the way home.
is there such a thing as a good beige lipstick or am i horribly out of date?
You can't go wrong with red to spice it up. I tend to get a lot more attention with red lips too.
