Keep Your Backside Outta This Trend

While on vacay in Portugal, my own sister spotted an alarming trend that later showed up at H&M and in my nightmares: Harem pants. Actually, parachute pants. Giving them an exotic name doesn't make them look any less like adult diapers.

As trends go, it can't get worse than pants with a crotch that grazes your ankle....or can it? Yoga apparel maker Lululemon Athletica just released..I can't believe I'm about to type this...the FANNY PACK. They're calling it a "Travel Pooch Lace," but look at it. It's a pack worn around the waist. A pack with pockets. That is, by definition, a fanny pack.

Are we really prepared to start 2009 like this?

The harem pants are totally disturbing. There is absolutely no situation where these would be appropriate or attractive. Now that fanny pack on the other hand, I actually think it looks kind of cute :)

The fanny pack is alive and well in Italy. When I studied abroad in Tuscany, the men all were sporty fanny packs, which my travel buddy and I affectionately refer to as manny packs!

I call them "hammer pants" and actually LOVE them! I bought some in Paris and they are so comfortable to walk around in and wear on the plane. I do admit, cute ones are hard to find. Free People has some cute ones.

Harem pants have been big in Europe since like 2005. So have fanny packs. This isn't exactly earth shattering news.

I live in Ireland and I can tell you that I have NEVER seen harem pants(with the exception of MC Hammer's video) before now. They are apparently a 'new trend', one which not many people here will be buying into anyway-I actually saw a woman in a pair the other week in my shopping centre and eveyone was turning around as she walked past, she was like something from Aladdin! Fanny packs(although we call them bum bags ha ha) are more common on the continent in places like Italy as one person pointed out above than they would be in Ireland or England. Either way my main point is harem pants should be a MAJOR no no.

Bum bags! That's a much more appropriate term!

There is a man in my office who wears a fanny pack everyday as part of his clothing. We are in the US and in an office. There is no need to wear a fanny pack.
Hammer pants should NEVER make a come back, just not a good look...

I love lulu lemon! I think the stylish fanny pack is a GREAT option for someone who doesn't want to have to lug around a giant bag.

Regarding the travel pooch pack, don't knock it until I see it in the store--it looks trendy and cute! (Not to mention FUNCTIONAL for those of us who walk dogs and need to carry dog bags, keys, cell phone, etc...) Haven't you ever seen how cool the Fiona character looks on "Burn Notice" with her side/waist pack? She's a trendy/hot dresser, and something like that looks awesome on her!
