Trend Alert: Matte Nail Polish

Hello, I’m Siobhan, also known as The Nailphile, and I’m visiting today to tell you about Sephora by OPI’s new limited edition matte nail colors. They’ve taken three classic shades, Domestic Goddess, a bright purple crème, the unforgettable Metro Chic, and What’s A Tire Jack?, and made them uber-matte!

This season, we have many choices when it comes to matte nail lacquers, and I found that the formula of Sephora by OPI’s is truly a standout. Each of the three shades applied smoothly and effortlessly, just like a regular Sephora by OPI nail color. As always, both the brush and the formula were easy for me to control, allowing for quick and easy application, completely opaque and even in only two thin coats.

It is recommended that a base and top coat not be used with these polishes, and an additional trick I employ when applying mattes is to allow the first coat to dry for a minute or two, just long enough to become matte, before applying the second. Sephora by OPI’s mattes are very well pigmented and dry quickly, but are not so much so as to cause difficulty in application or to give a chalky appearance to the finished manicure, as you can see below. Finally, matte crèmes which are not chalky!

Metro Chic – I didn’t think it could be made more chic, but I was wrong! Matte makes it even better.

Domestic Goddess – this is a fantastic grape crème, which is truly a unique matte shade.

What’s A Tire Jack? – blackest black made matte, this is the one I most anticipated. How dramatic!

Sephora by OPI has really thrilled me with these matte nail colors, taking some of their best shades and transforming them into an exceptional matte formula. Kudos to Sephora!

I am not jumping on the matte nail trend bandwagon. I think it looks horrible.

heidiandseek said...

I agree with Kristina. Especially the black color, it looks like Siobhan has chalkboards for fingernails. I love nail polish with the fun variety of colors and witty names, but where did the matte nail trend come from?

I love the look of the matte nail polishes! can't wait to buy these!

Anonymous said...

Don't think I would be interested as I like the high gloss look

RachKath said...

I bought one of these by accident. It looks like I have soap scum on my nails. I "fixed" it by putting on a glittery top coat. The effect was actually cool. It was sparkly but not as "loud" as glitter would normally be. Alone, NO as a base to tone down glitter/frost - yes.

I've been wearing matte polish for a while now and love it. It's an easy way to have something fairly unique without trying too hard. It also looks incredible with the corresponding gloss color stripped across it! You just have to release your creativity!!!

The whole reason I get my nails done is for the shiny shiny. So, no.

Anonymous said...

I think Maybelline did this years ago, but they had a pretty burgandy color that I loved. I don't really like any of these colors.

I have Metro Chic and I love it. I think matte is great, especially for Fall.

Devon said...

I don't love the matte finish. Part of the great manicure look is the shine. I just bought a top coat called "Patent Leather Top-Coat". The matte is very chalky.

jenn said...

Ooh, possibly, but on short, short nails..and not the grey, that definitely looks like paint primer.. :/

Cortney said...

I think the black looks okay, but really it all looks kinda gross to me.

marshmallory said...

i bought a matte turquoise nail polish on accident a few weeks ago, and i really love how it looks. i have very short nails though, so maybe it looks better on short nails. not a huge fan of the colors above.

Schin said...

Maybe it can be used as an embellishment to a glossy nail design, sure. But for the whole nail to look matte just looks like chalk. And now I can't stop cringing at the thought of it on chalkboard. Shudder!

nekobomb said...

I have to agree with the majority. The high gloss is definitely more appealing and makes your hands look 'clean', smooth and refined. Isn't that what women want? Matte is unpolished, coarse and makes me think I need to wash my hands.

MaryBeth said...

Matte nail polish? NO!! Its hideous!

StarEIs said...

I have to agree... it reminds me of a chalkboard, and I'm getting goosebumps just looking at them. *shudder*

not gonna lie, im totally NOT a fan of matte nail polish. :/

Shelly Rodriguez said...

I like the look in theory, BUT--only on the shortest of nails. I think on long nails it looks terrible.

Anonymous said...

not falling for this trend.

Gina said...

Very excited for it. Did an editorial shoot a year or so back where the manicurist did my nails in a black matte and it was so cool looking. Would love to try KO's matte nail polish, but it's ridiculously expensive at $22. So I'll be happy to go w/ OPI, though their site warns against use of hand lotion with the nails and that's a tad annoying.

Anonymous said...

I have tried the OPI and am *NOT* a fan. I don't even like the look in professional photos.

Definitely not jumping on this trend and personally hoping it goes by fast....

Elizabeth said...

I'm a fan of matte nails -- they look great if you pair them with the right stuff for kind of an edgy look. I'm really tempted to pick up a bottle...

MarblesMom said...

I can't imagine not using a base coat... Especially with these colors. I'll pass.

sayra said...

Matte nail polish? Isn't that for guys? The whole man glaze look is not for me. I like to look pretty.

cass_m said...

Not a fan. I even find OPI Brights too flat without a opal top coat.

Anonymous said...

yuck. me no likey the matte polish. It looks like when you peel of your shiny top coat. girls want glossy nails!

sherish said...

I love the matte nails look! The grey one doesn't look great but I would definately get the purple!

Anni said...

I think I kind of like it!

Anonymous said...

ohhh yuck, just to imagine what it feels like makes me cringe!

cwf said...

Don't like this look at all. And if I did, why spend money on something special? Just use an old polish and drag your nails through sand before they dry.

Anonymous said...

NO.

Anonymous said...

Hm, a few assumptions on what women want or a largely generalized concept of beauty. Cute - don't speak for me, kthnx.

I love it BECAUSE it's different, it's an edge to something traditionally feminine, because it isn't the same old sleek/glossy/dainty stuff, and you can do a ton of different things with varying finishes. I think a simple black gloss design (like a cute flower or something) on the black matte would be stunning. I probably won't do it because I don't feel like redoing my nails more often for lack of top coat, but I wish I could!

Basically, more stuff to be creative with. Creativity and individual style is ALSO something that can be pretty darn beautiful and feminine.

Obvs blanket statements annoy me. The end.

CatPA said...

No thanks. I can see me doing a semigloss but not matte. I'll leave that look for my eyes, lips and cheeks.

Anonymous said...

I really like the look. It's edgy, different and fresh.

For me, this look requires short nails. On long nails, which I pretty much generally dislike, it is really tacky.

The gray is beautiful and will work well with the fall and winter cosmetic trends.

To the poster that said they don't like this look and that you can get the same look by painting your nails with your regular polish and dragging them through the sand before they dry...Really? A dramatic, incorrect and unnecessary comment.

lukymama said...

unless you have acrylics or tips on...matte shows every darn ridge in your nails...very disappointed that I spent $8.50.

Carleen said...

Nope, not for me thanks. Personally, I think they're absolutely hideous.

Rio Runs said...

I like matte lips, but shiny nails. Shiny nails = healthy nails.

Anonymous said...

I agree, this look is horrible. Looks like you like you stuck your hand in a jar of paste. Love OPI, but would never wear that!! A huge NO!!

Anonymous said...

I wore matte nail polish years ago - from Lancome, I think. It was an egg shell color and it really looked nice. Guess I was ahead of the trend.

Cynthia said...

I don't really get the whole matte nail thing - I tried it the last time it was big and didn't care for it. I like my nails to be shiny, shiny, shiny - I don't even really like creme colors, I like a bit of sparkle in my shades.

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT And didn't know it existed until NOW! I have gel nails hope it works and will have to buy some to bring to my salon! Very exciting! And the idea of a gloss strip or small glitter on top great tips ladies. Thank you!

falley said...

Looks like if you put regular nail polish on the world's most dead, dry nails and it just sucked all the moisture out. But for some reason, a tiny thing inside of me is telling me I like it. I'm going to ignore that part though, and go with my gut instincts: do not buy.

deb said...

I think I prefer the shiny/glossy version of nail color.

scigirl543 said...

I like the black one, but the other two just sort of don´t look right...I do like heidiandseek´s idea earlier about using black matte nailpolish as a chalkboard. adding accents (tips, etc) in colored chalk would be a quick and easy way to change the appearance of your nails between paintings.

Anonymous said...

well, for some strange reason this is the trend for fall...for something different I kinda like it, especially Metro Chic and the purple. But I don't really like the black. And I 100% agree with other posters that this looks WAY better on SHORT nails.

Kimberly said...

I like the idea of introducing the matte nail polish and think it's worth a try - why not? Does anyone know when it'll be available in the stores?

Stephanie said...

going to skip this trend I think

Dezii830 said...

i dont think ill be trying this look .. i believe for me nails should be very shiny and attractive .. i think this is just an advertised look not somthing anyone can wear !! looks very chalky!

KhrisW said...

I like the look.

ART BRAT said...

No.. matte nail colour is horrible, I've tried it before, and don't like it.

Anonymous said...

It's a ridiculous attempt to try and create another trend so we'll buy more polish - and get to look dead and lifeless as addional side effect. Just ugly.

Anonymous said...

Some trends are horrendous. This is one of them. I am a licensed manicurist and I firmly believe that matte nail polish looks dirty. It looks like someone put on nail polish without using the topcoat. Cheap. Old. Better in the abstract. Matte nail polishes do not stay long on natural nails as opposed to normal ones. Keep some shiny top coat handy, ladies, this trend will leave soon.

Kalie said...

I hate this trend. It looks like you went ghetto and painted your nails with actual paint. It looks chalky and thick. I prefer shiny, glossy nails instead. They look healthier, not dead.

Carla B. said...

Hmmm...not so much. Although I can see it working with a combination of matte/shiny. Maybe a shiny nail with a matte french tip.

Anonymous said...

Wow... there are so many women here who are terrified of trying new things, aren't there? It's a little depressing. Edge it up some, ladies, don't get stuck in a rut!

Every guy that has seen my nails during conversation has RAVED about the matte look. I've been told it looks chic, classy but edgy, and youthful but also elegant.

Men don't want overly girly looks!

Anonymous said...

Some of you seem really, really boring.

Anonymous said...

You guys, if you're painting your nails any color, it doesn't matter whether or not they're shiny. No one is looking at coral-painted shiny nails and thinking "they're so healthy!" I don't get these shiny = healthy comments. Seems delusional...

Anonymous said...

I just painted my nails with the purple shade and I absolutely love love love it... I like the black as well, but I'm not so sure about the grey one. It's just very unnatural looking to me (not that nailpolish is ever really natural looking though...)

leena said...

Ew! It looks like you have Play-Doh for finger nails! I thought matte nail polish was for guys.

Jason said...

I have to admit, even I am not a fan of the matte look on nails for men or women (even though it's sometimes been referred to as "for guys").
I do however like the semi-matte look though, and in some colors, I actually prefer it over high gloss. I think this type of finish works quite well for men and seems to hold up better than matte.
I typically wear it on my toes, but no color on my fingernails.

Anonymous said...

I love the black matte nail polish. I normally wear glossy nail polishes, and this is something a little different. I don't see why some people are getting so upset by this trend. If you don't like it, don't wear it.

Anonymous said...

I got the OPI hot pink (almost iridescent) and put on 3 coats and just fell in love with my nails! I couldn't stop staring at them all weekend. I think it's fun to do new stuff.

Anonymous said...

You are all a bunch of traditionalists! Matte is not only refreshing but a welcome design progression.

Anonymous said...

Well they make a matte topcoat that can make any polish matte China glazes is rather good so you can buy a bottle to try it without to much gulit

Anonymous said...

Ewwwwww! NO NO NO NO it looks like someone just colored their nails with a sharpie. Uhmmmm excuse me
last time I checked that'. Not
attractive AT ALL

Chloe said...

The first one looks like cement!! The point of nail Polish is to make nails look POLISHED. Duh

Anonymous said...

Chloe, do your nails naturally look like cement? If not, those look polished.

Anonymous said...

I bought the purple and the black matte polishes and they're so cool! At first, the polish does look fairly chalky (which I happened to like). After a day or so, though, the finish changed and looked sort of like leather. I'm quite happy with this product!

Hi, I bought OPI's new Metro Chic matte nail polish the other day and was really excited to use it.
I didn't apply a basecoat or a topcoat, however when the nail polish dried it had a shine to it? Do you have any advice that could help me out? ):

Don't stop posting such themes. I like to read articles like that. BTW add some pics :)

I am kinda on the fence about the trend, I just bought OPI Russian Navy Matte for a school dance. I was kinda dissapointed with the quality..i touched my nail once lightly and the polish fell apart, But I LOVE the way it looked. I really don't like the sephora matte colors, the OPI ones are much better

This could be something that could grow on me. Maybe the matte nail polish may look good depending on the outfit.
