Kissed (Not Scorched) By The Sun
Listen up, ladies: It's Caryn again with some serious beauty advice. Take notes.
We’ve heard it before: “Don’t forget to wear sunscreen!” Yeah, yeah, yeah, right? I know what life is like in the morning - we all just want to do the bare minimum while looking our best. But truth be told, we won’t be looking our best when all the sun exposure has caught up. Ready to be a little spooked? Did you know that....
...tanning beds expose us to 12 times the annual UVA dose compared to regular sun exposure?
I recently discovered Bliss’s Best of Skintensions line, and let me tell you, they aren’t lying. Their daily moisturizer with SPF is my savior. It glides on your skin without the smell of sunscreen, and leaves just a great blissful scent. You must try it!
You should always reapply sunscreen throughout the day and the easiest way, especially on- the-go, is Peter Thomas Roth’s Instant Mineral SPF 30. It’s a mineral sunblock that feels like air on the skin and has a brush applicator for a super-easy application. It’s a beauty must, especially for the summer!Monday, April 27, 2009
Yellow Shadow: How Gold Would You Go?

The bloggers at Allure are warming up to the idea of yellow eyeshadow for the summer. They're claiming they copped the idea from a recent Christian Dior show, but we know someone who's been up on gold lids since the holidays: Me (yes, really. See?). Although I actually copied the idea from Sephora's holiday catalog.
If you're up for a little sunny experimentation on your lids, here are two to try:
Shiseido The Makeup Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow in Goldlights
YSL Ombres 5 Lumieres 5 Colour Harmony For Eyes - 3 Tawny
Products We Would Skip Dinner For Rather Than Go Without
Currently, I can't live - or leave home - without Benefit's new Hello, Flawless powder. It's a 2-in-1 prod that does the job of foundation and concealer all by itself.
Like all beauty products I'm currently obsessed with, I'll take the first chance I get to chat up my amazing find ("Look, lady on the subway! Want to see the best powder ever?"). So I put the question to our Twitter crowd: What's your right-now must-have?
ParisianGal: Dr. Brandt's Pores No More...a must-have!
sweetarchivia: My current favorite beauty product is Cargo Blu Ray Polishing Cloths for super smooth skin! Luv it!
RobinC720: My favorite right now is Benetint. I have a feeling I'll love the new Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion once I try it sflores900: I LOVE Make Up For Ever's new Sculpting Kit. It gives me the great cheekbones my mother didn't!!!
laratf: Smashbox Limitless Long Wear Lip Gloss in Boundless. Such a pretty poppy pink / gold shade that lasts (even in the pool)!
ashlock_k: False eyelashes are my current beauty fave.
knittinglizzie: A Sephora rep recommended Cargo's One Base, and I've been very pleased with it! Also: Bliss Youth as We Know it Cream

Beauty By The Numbers: We Really, Really Love Our Makeovers
It's a transfiercemation.
We're talking about the stilettos in your closet or song on your playlist that take you from blah to rah! rah! rah! in :30 flat just by putting them on and rocking them out. A makeover has the same effect (srsly, any girl can tell you that), but now the gals behind Dailymakeover.com have the numbers to prove what we knew all along: A swipe of red lipstick is the equivalent of taking a kickboxing class - 'coz no one puts baby in a corner when she's wearing Red Flirt #13 .
75% feel that makeovers are about enhancing BOTH your inner spirit and your appearance
78% feel that makeovers are more about helping someone feel more confident than about improving their looks
Reasons to have makeover:
increase confidence (34%)
just for fun (23%)
look special for a special occasion (15%)
update their look for seasonal trends (14%)
become more beautiful (12%)
Half of the respondents liked their overall appearance but would like help with creating a simple makeover.
When asked what things respondents would like to have done during a makeover, haircut/hairstyles ranked as the number one choice (27%) followed by makeup (26%), clothing advise (24%) and hair color (25%).
The two scariest things about having a makeover are letting someone change their haircut or color (47%) and the reaction of friends (25%).

Stila's here To Stay (Woot Woot!)

Stila fans, on the count of 3..2...1..phew! If you’ve been hoarding Lip Glazes and Kitten Shadow Washes amid rumblings and rumors that Stila was going away, you’ll be tickled pink to know Patriarch Partners recently purchased the company. Even better: the CEO is a Stila fan! “As a Stila girl, I’m thrilled to be part of this great company!” said Lynn Tilton.
We’re just glad we can relax and stop snatching up Stila’s Talking Palettes. 1,327 shadows was really getting excessive...

Earth Angels: How Green Is Your Routine?
Happy Earth Day! How are you celebrating life on the third rock from the sun? Are you adding greener glamour to your beauty routine?
My favorite eco-chic trick is to ditch cotton balls in favor of reusable washclothes, or (better!) natural materials like sea sponges - it's a simple step any gal can start doing to lighten up her load on the planet.
What are some of your best tips for getting glam while keeping it green?
Natural Enforcement: How Sephora Categorizes Natural Products
She holds the title of Skincare Strategist and Client Advocate for Sephora, but Jamie Anderson recently expanded her role as chief of beauty police, laying down the law when it comes to natural products. Anderson, along with a team of experts, has worked tirelessly to define and create Sephora’s new natural and organic category, which includes a self-regulating system to clearly identify what’s natural and what’s not at Sephora. Here, she talks about the new initiative and patrolling thousands of products.
It seems everything—from potato chips to pressed powder—uses the term natural in some capacity. How do we know if something is truly natural? Has the term become a misnomer?
Jamie Anderson: The term natural is not effectively regulated in any capacity so it tends to get misused regularly. You can slap the word natural on nearly anything. For this reason, we felt we had to take the initiative to define what natural means in terms of our environment. What is natural beauty? We have defined the term as it relates to Sephora and products must live up to that definition to be considered natural.
What is Sephora’s definition of natural?
JA: At Sephora, products that are considered natural have committed to formulating with high concentrations of antioxidants, botanicals, essential oils, fruit extracts, marine bioactives, minerals and vitamins, and fewer to no GMO’s, parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic dyes, synthetic fragrances and triclosan.
And any product that Sephora says is natural has met these standards?
JA: Any product that wants to be categorized as natural at Sephora has to go through our audit. A process has been put into place where we review the ingredients and other documentation to ensure they meet our standards. On average we’re auditing 25-35 products a week. And not every product meets the standard, but the ones that do receive our green logo, which indicates it has met our criteria.
Why did Sephora feel so compelled to define this category and establish this self-regulating, or as you call it, auditing process?
JA: Anyone can put the word natural on a label, but a client would have to be very educated to know what to look for on that label. We wanted to simplify it and make it easier to navigate the category. When a product passes the audit, it receives our green logo. When you walk into a Sephora store or shop online and see that logo, you know what you are getting—naturally formulated products.
The beauty industry is always evolving, be it new ingredients or new formulations. How is Sephora’s auditing system keeping up with the ever-evolving business?
JA: With natural products in such high demand, more options are becoming available. New ingredients are being sourced and products are being reformulated so we have to stay on top of the industry and evolve with it. We read books and clinical studies, and we subscribe to a variety of newsletters and publications related to cosmetic chemistry. We also attend science, and research and development conferences, as well as work with brand formulators to stay up to date on green chemistry. Our auditing system is evolving quickly and the criteria we have in place now will change and update as the industry does.
Have any other beauty retailers done this, established there own auditing system to clearly identify what is natural?
JA: I’m not aware of any other beauty retailer that has established this kind of initiative. No one, to my knowledge, clearly calls out how they define natural. Our process has made it a lot easier to shop for naturals and know what you are getting in terms of ingredients.
For the people reading this who don’t believe natural products are effective, what are your parting words?
JA: A lot of progress has been made in this category. What you may not realize is a lot of your favorite ingredients are also available in natural formulations. If you’re a fan of peptides, there are natural peptides derived from wheat. It’s the same with ingredients like vitamins A and C. It’s just vitamins A and C naturally sourced.
Happy Earth Day From Green Beauty Queen Josie Maran
Ok, she's actually an uber-famous model and mom, first and foremost, but anyone who knows Josie Maran is also familiar with her eco-chic lifestyle and dedication to saving the planet. Case in point: her Luxury-With-A-Conscience line, Josie Maran Cosmetics. (Hey, we don't call her the Green Queen at Sephora for nothing!) So in honor of the one day of the year that we all gather to celebrate Mother Earth, we couldn't think of a better person to kick off your Earth Day beautifully than Josie. She's even created a special green-on-the-go kit just for Earth Day to get your natural beauty routine going. Heeee-re's Josie! Happy Earth Day everyone. - Joannie McIntyre

Sephora Goes to Coachella
Maybe the girl standing next to me before The Fleet Foxes performance summed up this year's Coachella style best. "It's like homeless meets the 1980s. Here's my ratty tank top. And here's my Buddy Band from 1983." While her observation may not be chronologically correct (Buddy Bands are soooo 1990s "Saved by the Bell," dweeb.), her analogy was spot on. Add in an undeniable hippy undercurrent, and you've got yourself The Coachella Trifecta!
What an amazing event: incredible music, unparalleled people watching, and fabulous fashion. My first time at Coachella didn't disappoint. (Nor did the tan I scored while enjoying all of the above.)
The festival is more of a style showdown than a beauty exposition, mostly because of the face-melting heat and need for hats. But there's beauty in bare faces and haphazard hairdos, too. Especially when accessorized with a smile, as was the case for me and tens of thousands of other happy fans.
Here's a rundown of the trends I spotted white listening to the tunes...
ACCESSORIES: I'm betting Urban Outfitters had a good month.
-Gladiator sandals
-Fedoras and any brimmed hat of the straw variety
-Fanny packs (For real. I wish I had one.)
-Rayban-style shades
HAIR: If you're goiiiiiiiing, to see Coachella, be sure to wearrrrr some feathers in your hairrrrrr!
-Braids
-Messy buns
-Horizontal headbands
-Feathers
MAKEUP: Unless wild facepaints count, zero!
Sweating in 95-degree weather for an entire day warrants a beauty bye in my book. The only thing I saw getting applied was massive amounts of SPF and lip balm.
Next year, I'm bringing a fanny pack. Those are CoacHELLA cool.
Get The Look: Glitteratti
I spent last Friday with Sephora Pro Beauty team member Sara Biria, who was at Sephora University for an Allure magazine photo shoot for their August issue (My job on set: Leak pictures).
Naturally, I expect a Pro Beauty girl's makeup to be flawless...but dazzling? Sparkling? Glittery? She rocked liner that was all that and more.Getting glitzy purple peepers is an amazing look...that's amazingly easy. Sara created this in two steps:
Step One
Line your upper and lower lash line with Urban Decay's 24/7 eyeliner in Ransom. Make sure to stay as close to the lash line as possible.
Step Two
Add a layer of glitter over your eyeliner. Sara's pick is Urban Decay's Heavy Metal glitter liner in Metalhead. The super-fine brush makes coloring within the lines easy.
Let your work dry, then follow up with a few coats of mascara, and glow!

The No Makeup Makeup Look
The gals in the office were chatting the other day, and my coworker told us that her husband is forever telling her he liked the way she did her makeup back when she was 23--namely, back when she wasn't wearing any.
It's been 10 years since they met, and she's not about to indulge him in a true natural look these days. But the no makeup makeup look? That she can do.
I myself am a big advocate of the natural look; we all know that less is sometimes more. To score this look, try to these tips and you’re sure to fool anyone (including yourself!).
I love Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 20. It’s super easy to apply and leaves your skin feeling smooth and looking fantastic. Plus, it has SPF 20 so you can skip the moisturizer and sunblock with this prod.
Don’t stop here! Next, pick up Smashbox's Photo Finish Lid Primer for eyes. Yes, an eye primer is usually used when you plan on putting color on your lids, but this formula is so incredible that it also creates the perfect natural eye look everyone is craving right now.
The perfect blush is important for this look since it will highlight your face. Try using a cheek color that has a little bit more bronze than you normally use. I’m a huge fan of Too Faced Mocha Mi Amore Blush. This color looks fab on just about anyone, even gals with paler skin.
Don’t forget to pucker up and apply some gloss to those lips. If you haven’t already
fallen for it, you must try Bare Escentuals Butom Lips. This gloss is amazing- the colors, the smell and (bonus alert!) it plumps! Every color is great, but I wear Amber most of the time. It’s a bit more peachy, so with this look it definitely compliments the barely-there look.
Lash but not least, don’t forget to pump up the eye with just a tad of mascara on the top lashes. I wouldn’t recommend a deep black for this look, so I recommend Korres Deep Colour Mascara. Your lashes will feel incredibly soft, and won’t clump. When going el natural, I like to use the deep brown or even the gray green. Both look beautiful.

Behind The Scenes At Allure's Photoshoot
With Sara Biria At Sephora University!

Hello from Sephora University! I'm hanging out on the set of Allure's photoshoot with Sara Biria, Sephora Pro Beauty member and our MVP (Most Voted Pro) winner.
Allure is shooting their MVP winner, Lisa Rice, an ER nurse who's getting dolled up with Sara's signature look: Smoky eye and nude lips.
More on the makeover how-to later, but follow our Twitter feed on the left to get on-sight tips and tricks from Sara herself!
Twitter Pick Her A Wickeder Kisser
Sometimes a girl just cannot make up her mind.
Let's say you want a pluckier, plumper pout. Are you after a subtle boost, or can you handle a little sting? What about color? Yes? No? Are you already tired of the questions?
The oldie old way to decide meant random selection (you, at a store, grabbing whatever's on a shelf you can reach). The new way of doing things: ask Sephora's Twitter followers. Brilliant! Because you know any girl following tweets dedicated to makeup! makeup! makeup! is going to have an authoritative opinion.
See?
heathereliza: Want really plump lips...try the Too Faced Lip Injection. Serious lipage going on!
BeautyLass: Lip Fusion is by far my favorite lip plumper. Why? Because it actually works, isn't too sticky and smells good + super shiny!
nanabananas: I love DuWop's Lip Venom and Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips.
mslinhelaine: DuWop's Venom Flash! It goes on smooth, and is pretty when worn alone or over lipstick.
thespastkone: Lip Fusion XL, no contest.
Amenthes: Without a doubt, I am a huge fan of Too Faced's Lip Injection.
makeupartist: The one from Sugar is great and very under the radar!
fffabulous: I love love love Stila Plumping Lip Glaze!
laratf: Ooooh that's a toughie. I'll say Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips (in Melonie) because the price is right and it does the trick.
oldergirlbeauty: Josie Maran Lip Plumping Gloss - because it tastes so. damn. good!
Frosted Lips Are Back. And Still A Bad Idea.
The bloggers at Glamour magazine are actually rethinking the whole frosted lipstick thing. Rethinking here not meaning get rid of once and for all but actually trying the trend again.
Note to Glamour: When I threatened to bring frosted lipstick back, I was kidding.

GIVE ME AN "A" (for açaí, Amazon, awesome)!

Sephora's Nicole Grippo, Sambazon's Jeremy Black and tarte's Candace Craig shamelessly plugging purple products!
While it was chilly and rainy in New York City on Tuesday night, inside Sushi Samba it was HOT! HOT! HOT! Sambazon with the help of tarte celebrated the launch of their new energy boosting drink called Jungle Love. Since açaí, the ever so popular purple berry, is a key ingredient for both brands, they each support Sustainable Amazon Partnership (SAP), a public and private collaboration that promotes lasting sustainable management of the Brazilian Amazon Rainforest. Açaí's filled with amazing antioxidants and is said to cleanse the body and improve the appearance of wrinkles. Wanna add a little of this magic fruit to your daily routine? Check out tarte cheek stain, double dose lip gloss and Sambazon Organic Açaí drinks.
How To: Turquoise, Gold, and Bronze Lids
Last week I blogged about how fond I am of a First Lady who loves false lashes as much as I do. But here's what else I'm also fond of: The eyeshadow our MAKE UP FOR EVER lash model was rocking.
Fellow blog readers wanted to know what's on her lids? I got Gina from MAKE UP FOR EVER to spill it: "Our model is wearing Eye Shadow #84 in Bronze with Star Powder #956 in Turquoise Gold on top.
Natural Selection: Sephora Sets Its Own Standards For Natural
Naturally formulated! Natural ingredients! All natural! With so many labels claiming something is “natural,” finding purely produced products has never been easier…or so we think. But did you know the term natural has no FDA regulation? That means the “natural” products you’re buying may not be so “natural” after all.
Thankfully, you can (beauty) sleep easy knowing that Sephora’s natural logo actually means what it says. The pretty proof: We’ve established a self-regulation process where products are required to meet our set of internal standards before we call them natural or organic. The standards we’re enforcing: natural products must contain the purest, most efficacious ingredients that Mother Nature has to offer and have fewer to no synthetic ingredients such as parabens, petrochemicals and sulfates.

Sephora’s natural products must be formulated with high concentrations of:
Antioxidants
Botanicals
Essential oils
Fruit extracts
Marine bioactives
Minerals
Vitamins
And fewer to no:
GMO's (genetically modified organisms)
Parabens
Petrochemicals
Phthalates
Sulfates
Synthetic dyes
Synthetic fragrances
Triclosan
Shop our natural selection>
When a product passes the test, we beauty mark it with our glam, green logo so it can be easily spotted online and in stores. From lipsticks and loose powders to serums and shampoos, our natural arsenal currently clocks in at over 1,400 products from more than 30 brands.
Want to go wild with your beauty routine? At Sephora, it’s naturally easy.
