Bridal Beauty: Traditional Look
Any traditional bridal beauties walking down the aisle soon? This look is for you! I already covered general bridal beauty tips from Sara and how to achieve a perfect complexion for those wedding photos. Now it’s on to the first look! Of course, what defines a traditional look for a bride is to each her own. For me, Sara created defined yet subtle eyes, perfected brows and a darker lip.
Sara began with the eyes, applying MAKE UP FOR EVER Shadow in Espresso 17 ($19), a neutral base color, from the lower lid to right up under the brows. She next used MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes in Black Purple 6L ($17) just along the lash line, blending it out to the lid with a brush. She chose liner over shadow for a longer hold and picked a plum shade because she said it’s “a big color that people use in a traditional bridal look. You can mix it with browns or neutral tones, and it will still make the look very enhanced.” Sara then added a little bit of MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes in Matte Black OL ($17), close to the lashes for an extra pop. (Waterproof makeup, of course, is staying-power insurance for those poignant toasts or teary vows!)
Next was a little MAKE UP FOR EVER Star Powder in Iridescent Beige 926 ($19) right in the center. According to Sara, for women who aren’t totally comfortable with doing their own makeup (this is where I say “I do”), loose shimmer is a great way to cover up any potential messes. It reflects light, concealing mistakes and perfecting the look. She finished with Dior DiorShow Black Out Waterproof Mascara ($24) on the lashes.
If you’re unsure whether you’ve applied enough eye makeup, have someone take a picture of you rather than just looking in a mirror. The look in photos is the one you’re going for!
On cheeks, Sara suggested a cream blush for a dewy look. She used NARS The Multiple in Orgasm ($37) just on the apples, cautioning against overapplying. For my oh-so-pale complexion, Sara brushed on Stila Sun Bronzing Powder with SPF 15 in Shade 2 ($28). She stressed, “Don’t overdo your bronzer. Put it only on the spots where the sun would naturally hit your face – a little bit on the forehead, cheeks, bridge of the nose, and chin.” If you don’t use bronzer, you can extend your blush out more.
Brows were next, a necessity for the traditional look, according to Sara. “The brows frame the face and eyes, really bringing out your gorgeous makeup," she said. She also advised getting brows professionally shaped a month before the wedding.
For me, Sara used Anastasia Brow Ex-press ($38), a kit that includes stencils, a brush, two colors to blend for a perfect match, a highlighter, and wax to apply on top for a longer hold. She started in the center of the brows, explaining it gives better control to balance the look out. If you start in the front, it’s easy to go heavy in the front and lighter in the back. If you start in the back, you could create an overly high arch.
Finally, lips completed the look. Most traditional bridal looks usually use a pink, a maroon, or a cranberry shade. Sara said, “Lips should look alive when you’re taking pictures or when you’re walking down the aisle. But you also have to be comfortable with your choice of color. If you want neutrals, a good peachy nude shade is good with a neutral gloss. And if you want darker lips, then don’t forget the lip liner to ensure it stays on.”
Sara first primed the lips with a bit of concealer (the wax from it fills in fine lines and keeps lipstick on longer). She then used MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Waterproof Lipliner in Matte Dark Raspberry 11C ($17), followed by Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Mulberry ($20) on top. She applied the stain with a brush, which she stressed was necessary for building better pigment and ensuring a longer-lasting finish.
Tips for lips:
1. If you’re not used to working with darker shades, after lining your lips, dip a Q-tip in makeup remover and outline the outside for a nice defined lip.
2. For women with fuller lips, stay away from liner and focus more on gloss, dabbing it in the center. Brides with thinner lips, on the other hand, should always use liner to create more definition and shape.
Next look coming down the aisle: romantic!

Temptu Is Here: Hollywood's Airbrush Comes To Sephora
For the last 28 years, Temptu has been the we need this on set stat! airbrusher for just about every Hollywood TV show and movie you've seen since 1981 (Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, Heroes, SNL...you get the idea). It's got what you could call a cult following, but A-listers and their makeup artists know a flawless face when they see one.
For the first time ever, Temptu is coming to Sephora! This schnazzy machine gently airbrushes makeup evenly over your face with a silicone-based formula that's waterproof (the airbrush applicator is $225; a 2-month supply of foundation is $55). And nope, Hollywood-level application skills aren't needed. Take a peek at our beauty blogger Nicole giving herself a first-ever airbrushed complexion. Yes, it's that easy.
Temptu is a Sephora exclusive that launches online later this month (it comes to stores in September). However, I call dibs on the first one. I can already tell this will be a must-have.

Glitz Up Your Lids: Adding That Gleam In Your Eye
Several months ago, Sephora PRO Beauty Member Sara Biria showed up at a photo shoot with the most dazzling purple glitter liner I'd ever laid eyes on. After months of serious eyenvy, I finally booked an appointment at the 5th Avenue Sephora store to upgrade my gaze - and was sure to take careful notes.
Sara first lined my eyes top and halfway across bottom with MAKE UP FOR EVER's Aqua Eyes eyeliner in Turquoise. Next, to light up my lids, she mixed two shades of Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Air Guitar (blue) and Baked (gold). To keep it more in the hint of glitz realm rather than spangle overboard, she only added glitter from the inner corner of my eye to the middle, leaving the out corner untouched.
The result? It's official: I'm a member of the Glitterati.
Time Out: Scents That Take You Back
Feeling a little nostalgic? There's flipping through your high school yearbook (AAHH! How high were those bangs???), or, there's getting a sniff of something that stimulates the release of old memories without the scary visual cues. Those scents would be marjoram, basil, balsam fir, and cypress.
Next time you feel a case of the, "Remember whens" coming on, be ready with these picks:
Miller Harris' Tangerine Vert mixes citrus fruits and marjoram for a sweet and earthy scent.
One of the newest scents in the Korres bath and body collection is basil - coincidence that it reminds us of good times? We think not.
Getting nostaligic for his frat days? No. Thinking about what a wonderful time he's had with you? Yes. That's what balsam fir will do to a guy in John Varvatos' body collection.
You love your blasts from the past - when you're not too busy walking the fine line between nice and naughty. Luckilyy Juicy's got notes of cypress in their Dirty English spritz.

Well, this just in: We've just posted four new gorgeous looks from Urban Decay on Sephora.com that'll give you MORE ideas to play with. There's an all-over green eye look called Pretty As Sin, and there's a cool blue-under-the-eye-only look called Get Baked. So pretty. Can't wait to try it. Enjoy!

Oh, Lighten Up: Summer Hair
Planning on lightening your locks this summer? No one would call the summer blondification (no, it's not a word. But shouldn't it be?) of hair a new trend - after all, it's an activity your mom was doing before she even graduated from high school. Still, we're detecting a recession-friendly theme when it comes to lock lightening: sunshine. Which is free, easy, and readily accessible - all factors which make for happier wallets.
Several of our favorite glossies recommend squeezing lemons over your tresses, then letting the sun do the rest of the work. But Glamour magazine takes this trick a step further with a recipe that not only calls for produce, but a trip to your liquor cabinet, too: Mix equal parts lemon juice and vodka and put it in a spritzer bottle. Splash this sauce on your locks, then let it dry in the sun or hit it with the blow-dryer.
Trendcentral then trumped Glamour's booze and fruit with a report that Sun-In purchases are on the rise. In fact, one trend spotter's own hairdresser told her to try it, recommending she pour it into a plant spritzing bottle, cut it with water, then gently mist the solution over her head for a more subtle approach.
Are you planning to lighten up this summer? Whether you go with lemons or a stylist - or a mix of both - we're all for going gold. Just don't forget your sunscreen.

Multicolored Manis: Would You Wear This?

Last week, our own beauty blogger Nicole was sporting a different color polish on each finger. Bright blue! Beachy coral! Sizzling neon! And that was just the right hand.
The rest of us just couldn't resist. "Can't make up your mind, Nic?" "Did someone spill a bag of Skittles on your hand?" "Are you charging admission to your ten-digit Tilt-A-Whirl?"
And then we saw this: Fashion Indie reports Hollywood stars are flashing a new hue on each finger. Color us wrong; we're clapping with monochromatic manis over Nicole's savoir fashion faire.
Top Nots: How Not To Wear Your Hair
No Comb Hair Days. Every girl has them. Some days you wake up with enough time to get yourself into hair and makeup; sometimes you're lucky if you can get your face done on the bus.
Our favorite No Comb style is the ballerina bun. Simple, elegant, and chic enough to fool people into thinking you did that 'do on purpose. But Who What Wear is seeing a new trend: Top Knots. Essentially scraping your hair to the top of your head and cinching it with a few pins.
We fully realize the goal of a No Combs is not combing. But isn't a top knot pretty much sweat pants for your head?

Get The Look With Kat Von D's Gypsy Palette

What can you do with Kat Von D's new Gypsy Palette? Beauty blogger Scrangie picked one up for her birthday, and showed us what it could do:

"Hawkwind all over lid, Birdcage from middle third to outer crease, Ego Sum in crease blended out and Gunner to darken crease and line under eye.
I also used Kat Von D Autograph Liquid Liner in Black Metal Love (hell yeah!). It's matte black, absolutely no shine, but with tiny flecks of silver microglitter. I admit, I bought this just for the name but I find myself using it almost every day. I'm almost finished with it! I never finish things!
I LOVE this palette. The colors all go so well together. The thing I like the most about it is Hawkwind eyeshadow- it's a white that flashes bright green. When you layer other colors on top of it, or you layer it on top of other colors, it adds a vivid bright green flash. It's so amazing. Reminds me of an old Urban Decay shadow... Fluorescent maybe? I don't remember the name. I wish they would sell Hawkwind all by itself, I foresee myself hitting pan on this color!
I also adore Gunner. It's so rich and sparkly. It's the emerald green I've been looking for! It looks like black with green glitter in the pan, but once you put it on your skin it becomes a bold, deep, dark emerald green with bright green sparkles. So amazing."

What's In Your Makeup Bag?
Maggie Ford Danielson knows a thing or two about makeup. Her mom and her aunt are Jane and Jean Ford, the gorgeous twins behind Benefit Cosmetics, and Maggie's own sister, Annie, works at Benefit with her, too. Beauty definitely runs in the family.
So when I caught her at Sephora on Lexington in New York, I had one question: "What's in your makeup bag, Maggie Ford Danielson from Benefit Cosmetics?" Not only did she obligingly dump out he contents, but showed me the 4 things she never leaves home without (and one awesome trick with Benefit's Eye Bright).
Free Sample Alert! Get To Know A New Brand

Faces Agree: No Foundation Foundation Saves Skin
First the girls at Lucky magazine raved all about it, and now the beauty editors at Vital Juice Daily are saying the same thing: Perricone MD's No Foundation Foundation rocks their faces off. In fact, VJD is dropping the L-word (light, obvs):
We think we've met The One. It's light, comfortable and it gets along with everybody. It's good for us, too.
We were skeptical, but Perricone MD's new No Foundation Foundation won us over with its sheer, natural coverage and dewy finish. It didn't look like we were wearing makeup--our skin just looked less blotchy, more glow-y. Like any good partner, it also has our back. The foundation has a built-in non-chemical SPF 30 to ward off damaging UV rays and DMAE and alpha lipoic acid to firm skin.
But here's what really made us feel like we'd met Prince Charming: The foundation works on all skin tones. Instead of heavy color, it contains specially treated pigments and light-diffusing mica, which softens the look of fine lines, wrinkles and pores.
In sickness and in health; for paler and for tanner skin tones--we're not letting this catch go.

It's Not You: He Really Does Stink
This is not a job I can imagine applying for....but researchers at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia recently conducted a study to see how well fragrances hid or covered body odor. Hey, this is scientific progress, people.
They took foul-smelling scents (uh...gross) and combined them with different perfumes. Out of the 32 fragrances tested, women were only fooled by 2 of them. For men, 19 of the fragrances worked.

Things Other Girls Love: Temptalia's Review Of T3
When would you pay $200 for a hairdryer? When it works so well you wish you could marry it and take it home to meet your parents. So we raise our strands to beauty blogger Temptalia's review of T3 Bespoke Labs Featherweight Dryer - our shiny, quickly-dried locks fully agree:
It BLEW me away. It was my first non-super-duper-cheap blow dryer. This was back when my hair was fairly long, too, and I rarely blew it out, because my old Conair took ten billion years to dry it. It would take so long that I would just give up and let it air dry. I’ve actually since upgraded to the Evolution ($300.00), because I like the addition of the heat controls. The biggest reason why I love both hair dryers is that my hair is dry in less than five minutes (even when I had long hair). They’re both incredibly lightweight (huge plus!). The only downside was that the controls could have been better placed, but you get used to it and it’s a non-issue for me now. I would love to see T3 create these fab blow dryers with retractable cords. Then they’d be perfect!
We're Seastruck For Blue & Green Shadow
From Sephora by OPI's true blue nail hues to the she-rocks-the-seashore look of the mermaids on Sephora's latest catalog...can you blame us for wanting to reel this amaseaing look to land?
Ships ahoy! Arming ourselves with sea greens and sparkling blues, we tried three looks we think rock the boys' boats:

Full Metal Jacket...For Your Toes
My mom is ready to shine. To kick off her summer, she kicked off her shoes for a mani using Sephora by OPI in Social Climber. Her take?
"This is just a fabulous and really unique color. Plus, it honestly looks like real metal. I feel like a cuter version of the Tin Woodsman. Wasn't he looking for a heart? Because silver toes are guaranteed to make 'em thump."

PRICE DROP ALERT: Lady Dior Charm Bag
We just got word (sorry to those who already beat us to it) that the adorable Lady Dior charm bag/touch up kit has been dropped from $95 to $49 bucks! Woot-woot! If you are a Dior nut like me, and can't afford the bags, this darling charm is the perfect medium - plus it comes with a highlighter and cheek/lip color that I just tried and loved. (Yes, this blog post is a day late because I had to go run out and get one!) It's like a terracotta, reddish brown creme shade that looks great on the lips, cheeks and even works on the eyelids! The case itself is heavier than I expected and has a cool, quilted leather texture on the outside, just like a Dior Handbag! The size was also surprising, about the size of a 4-quad eyeshadow palette, but still looks supercute hanging from my non-Dior handbag. STOKED. Another satisfied Dior devotee :) What are you still reading for? Go get yours! - Joannie McIntyre
Double Time: Foundations That Do More
The editors at Lucky magazine have a simple mission: Perfect skin. Failing that: Skin that looks perfect - despite a very hidden but very hard-working foundation.
After using their cheeks as the testing grounds for makeup that fits the mission, here's what they liked:
Murad Oil-Free Sunblock SPF15 Sheer Tint
"Fantastic if you're sensitive or oily; this is made with incredible shine reducers, plus lavender extract to bring down redness - and the subtle coverage is just enough to balance everything out."
Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation SFP30
"This is a full-fledged antiaging treatment masqerading as a tinted moisturizer: Alpha lipoic acid and high-tech patented complexes firm and reduce fine lines - and braod-spectrum sunblock prevents future damage.
Guest Blogger: Nathan Johnson Shares A Makeup Artist Must
When it comes to makeup, the more you know about the basic tools of the trade, the better equipped you will be to make yourself as flawless (or as natural) as you wish.
I cannot stress this enough: Brushes, when used properly, really are necessary. In case you don’t know this already, your fingers (in most, but not all, cases) will not give you the best application. In fact, they will give you an imprecise and messy application at best.
If undereye darkness and blemishes are your two biggest areas of concern, make sure you have a concealer brush stashed in your makeup bag.
Concealer Brush 101
I know there are a lot of people who insist that a finger works just fine, but consider this: First, if you have a blemish, why would you want to put anything over it with a fingertip full of dirt and bacteria? Isn’t the poor blemish already irritated enough? Secondly, the skin under your eye is delicate and easily susceptible to stretching. If you use a concealer brush, you will exert 75% less pressure on this sensitive area. Man of us put on creams and conceal undereye darkness on a daily basis. If you do the math, that is a ton of wear and tear on the thin undereye skin. Gravity does us enough damage; let's not help it out.
The Secret To Using A Concealer Brush
Uses: To apply concealer (liquid or cream), primers and eye creams.
Why it works: The narrow tapered tip of the brush fits perfectly into deeper and smaller contours and recesses than a foundation brush can reach. It is comprised of synthetic bristles that will evenly distribute product without absorption. The small brush tip makes it ideal for point-perfect coverage of blemishes. And (again!) it is more precise and hygienic than using your fingers.
What to do: Put a small amount of concealer onto the tip of the brush. Tap it onto the area requiring coverage, then blend out at the edges until it disappears into the skin. This is ideal for covering dark circles, darkness at the inner corner of the eye, darkness on the lid, broken blood vessels, redness around the nose, pimples and any other blemishes.
Tips and tricks:
• The skin around the eye is especially delicate and susceptible to damage. Applying all makeup, creams, gels and serums with a brush will help to ensure the elasticity and longevity of this sensitive areas.
• Use the brush as an eraser. If you have applied too much make-up around the eyes, a touch of concealer on this brush can make the problem disappear.
• Reactivate and smooth dry or cakey undereye concealer by putting a touch of eye cream on the brush and running it over the area.
My Favorite: The Sephora Brand Professional Platinum Concealer Brush #45 ($22) is perfection.

Bridal Beauty: Complexion Perfection
Hm, let’s look at my wedding checklist. Venue? Not yet. Date? Nope. Guest list? Ha! (No.)
But I promise, I'm definitely planning for it. At least I've been researching different bridal beauty looks and learning how to re-create them for the big day. I'll get into the first look (traditional!) next time, but first I thought I should concentrate on complexion. Because let's face it, without any beauty love, my normally dull, pale yet splotchy-in-spots complexion will be ... well, dull, pale, and splotchy in spots.
So here's the Sara Biria solution for brides. Primer is a crucial first step for a flawless face. As Sara applied Smashbox Photo Finish Primer ($36), she said, “A silicone-based primer is ideal. It won’t dry out the makeup and will set it in nicely, making it last long. Also, photo finish is great for pictures.”
Next, Sara applied Stila Illuminating Liquid Foundation ($38) with a brush. (I still remember all the application tips she taught me!) She stressed, “You don’t want anything too heavy, so go light with the foundation. Keep your skin looking clean and dewy.”
And thank goodness for concealer! Summer humidity brings out huge blemishes and subsequent scarring on my face. Sara used TheBalm Time Balm Concealer ($38) to cover my imperfections, saying, “This concealer is really nice and soft, buildable, and not too heavy.”
After applying your primer, foundation, then concealer, let your complexion sit for a little while, allowing your natural oils come through. When you’re ready to set in your makeup, Sara recommended MAKE UP FOR EVER HD Microfinish Powder ($30). “It’s microinfused so it just melts into the skin, not making it look like makeup," she said. "Don't just sweep it on. Instead, press it in with the brush bristles. Because it’s translucent, you can’t mess it up. ”
TIP: Inexperienced and applying your own makeup? Start with your eye makeup before your complexion. That way, if shadow flecks fall onto your skin, you can brush it off safely without smudging or wiping anything off.
Any other brides-to-be out there? Speak up! What beauty look are you going for on your big day?
Get ready for the first bridal look: traditional!

My addiction to this super-emollient palm fruit began at the tender age of 16; my Filipina mother commented on my ashy-looking legs and introduced me to the world of coconut oil - since then, I’ve been hooked!
Just the scent of coconut alone and I’m instantly transported to a tropical island, lazing about, getting a tan - a tan that will last longer and be intensified with the use of NARS Monoi Body Glow II. This is a superb creation of coconut oil & a native Tahitian flower, and the glow that you get will blow admirers away. Once your skin comes in contact with this luxe juice, it will honor and praise you for making it so incredibly soft and velvety.
Take it a step further and saturate your limbs in the NARS Body Glow - and be prepared to confidently show off your legs in those short summer skirts. This rich hue gives skin a golden subtle shimmer and a honey sheen that's equal to the enviable tans of Polynesian women.
So there’s no need for the tanning salon or frying yourself in the dangerous sun; with NARS Monoi Body Glow II & Body Glow set, in your possession this summer you will bring out that natural golden beauty in you. Sensual Summer Goddess, here you come!
Oops! The addiction doesn’t stop there! If not drenched in Philosophy’s uber-moisturizing coconut body line, steeped in Sephora’s ultra-rich coconut cream assortment, or spritzed with LaVanila’s heavenly Vanilla Coconut products, I go through withdrawals. The scent and texture of coconut alleviates my winter blues and with one whiff of these coconut treats, my anxiety and depression fades…..summer has arrived!
Give me my floppy straw hat, a flower in my hair, & the hedonistic consumption of these extremely nourishing coco products - even with just the coconut scent alone - and my sunshine season has begun.

Face Down The Summer Beautifully
Ready for summer? The girls at WhoWhatWear Daily are - and they've got two pretty picks that'll put you in the mood for some sun:
Nars Duo Eye Shadow ($32) in Scorching Sun
What better way to welcome the sunny weather than with a duet of blazing eye shadows? The industry experts at Nars created a new pair of shadows - one is a glazed apricot, the other is shimmering orange - that are almost universally flattering. Wear the Scorching Sun duo with a basically bare face and natural lip gloss for a naturally beautiful summer style.
Benefit Cosmetics Coralista Blush ($28)
Summer beauty is all about ease, so definitely don't miss out on Benefit's fuss-free flush, Coralista. The pretty peachy blush is even easier to wear than our other year-round standard, Nars Blush ($25) in Orgasm. We like that the powder has a hint o' pink in the formula, as that rosy touch results in a wildly flattering product. Also notable: while Coralista has a little shimmer, it's very subtle, so you won't look like you smeared on some pageant-girl body glitter.
3 Trends I Hate - And You Should Too
Nancy taught Sarah about the rule of three in The Craft, and yesterday, the fashion world dedicated itself to supporting this theory. Between 9:37 am and 3:54 pm, I had viewed no fewer than three trends that should be stopped in their tracks as a public service.
Crime #1: Scrunchies
If you read this blog even semi-regularly, you know how I feel about scrunchies. They are wrong. And so is a campaign to make them seem cool again.
Crime # 2: Leaking Liner
Leaking liner is not to be confused with undereye liner; I've recently noticed a lot of girls pulling off liner on their lower, but not their top lids (are you one of them? Send me a pic!). Liner that drips past your undereye concealer, tho? Girl, please. Get some Q-tips and clean that up.
Crime #3: Right Trend, Wrong Season
Every gal has a bad day, and I'm sure that applies to mannequins, too. So maybe no one told Aggy that dark lips are great for fall....but hardly the look of summer.
Agree? Disagree? Or where there even more hideous trends I missed yesterday?

Pretty Work: Jean & Jane Ford of Benefit Cosmetics
"Hello, my name's Jenny, and I'm addicted to Benefit Cosmetics."
Yeah, I have a problem - isn't admiting it the first step? - but it's hard to break the cycle when Dr. Feelgood is making house calls. The girls at Vogue magazine get me - this month they hooked Benefit beauty junkies up with fix in an article that goes behnd the scenes with brand founders (and twins!) Jane & Jean Ford.
Sigh....
Kate Hudson and Rachel McAdams don't use the same makeup artist, and Sarah Jessica Parker and Nicole Kidman aren't seeing the same holistic healer. So how to explain their similar rosy glows and collectively perfect bee-stung lips? No, the answer has nothing to do with Photoshop. They're all members of the cult of Benetint, the original lip and cheek stain from Benefit Cosmetics that's been making fans of celebrities—and the rest of us—for over 30 years.
The brainchild of twin sisters Jean and Jane Ford, Benefit thrives on a quirky sensibility—a "laughter is the best cosmetic" policy that's an extension of the founders' own lighthearted approach to life. After making for the West Coast to pursue a short-lived career in modeling, the Indiana-born Fords launched their beauty empire in the late seventies with the idea that makeup could provide both physical and comic relief for women who, as the sisters put it, "might be having a case of the uglies." Seven and a half million multitasking bottles of Benetint later, and the Fords are still doling out the pretty. "We don't follow trends," says Jean. "Our raison d'ĂŞtre is to create products to fix particular beauty dilemmas."
More ways to worship: See the J&J Ford slideshow>
Their latest venture is a new scent trio due out next month - so stay tuned! We'll be breaking it on Beauty & The Blog this month!
What Is High Definition Makeup?
After the national Digital TV switch on June 12, you can expect to have pores, fine lines, little wrinkles and other assorted imperfections popping up huge all over your small screen - unless, of course, the makeup artists for your favorite shows are using high definition makeup.
Originally designed for use in film and television, high-definition makeup provides a flawless, picture-perfect complexion and is invisible to the 6x magnification of high-def cameras (and the naked eye!), thanks to:
The result is skin that looks naturally flawless whether on screen or on the street. |

Winner of Real Simple Sweepstakes
Good things don’t always come in small packages. Just ask Julie Thornton from Salt Lake City, the lucky winner of the Real Simple “Your Dream Team” sweepstakes. She and her daughter were treated to round-trip airfare to New York City and three nights in a luxe Manhattan hotel – her first trip to New York in 30 years! Last Friday at the Sephora Fifth Avenue store, PRO Beauty Team member Sara Biria was waiting to pamper her with specialized attention and expert advice. Based on a skincare consultation from Sara, Julie received a range of Cosmedicine products for a personalized head-to-toe skincare regime, followed by a glam makeover and pro tips. She finished her day with a $500 shopping spree at Sephora. Enjoying her trip and day of Sephora fun, Julie quipped, ““I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up. And that’s retired.”
The Secret To A Saucy Summer
tarte's new EyeQuatic Waterproof Summer Essentials set has everything you need for a glamorous summer - waterproof mascara and three crease-proof shadows in teal, champagne, and lavender.
But full disclosure here: I would totally buy this for the silk head scarf. Because it practically shouts, "To be worn with your highest espadrilles and swingiest patio dress." Hello, summer!
Interview With Sephora PRO Beauty Member Sara Biria
Our very own Sephora PRO Beauty team member, Sara Biria, was featured in the New York Times! Read on... and go Sara!
Sara Biria, a 24-year-old makeup artist at Sephora on Fifth Avenue, has twice — in 2007 and 2008 — won the company’s national makeup competition to become part of its 15-person traveling beauty team, plying her trade at fashion shows and other events around the country. She was born in Tehran and moved with her family to Germany and then to Portland, Ore. She began working at Sephora in Portland in 2006 and moved to New York, where she is based, in 2007.
Why makeup? It made me feel good, and boosted my self-esteem. I felt fun and flirty. And growing up, having your basic teenage insecurities, it was just a way for me to express the way I was. If you’re not a cheerleader, makeup still always made you feel beautiful.
Age you first wore makeup: Eleven. I put on hot pink eye shadow and Wet ‘n’ Wild hot pink lipstick, but my older sister saw me, and I was in so much trouble. She said, “You can’t wear makeup — you’re too young.” So I took it off. And then put it back on, on the bus to school. I did that until I was 14.
Mother and daughter beauty school: By the end of freshmen year, my house would be where everyone would get ready for proms and dances. Mom was the hairstylist, and I’d do the makeup. We were the glam squad.
Worst look you’ve worn: Hot pink eye shadow mixed with baby blue and dark chocolate lip liner mixed with frosty pink-beige lipstick. I will never show pictures of that to anyone, ever. I think I was 13 or 14.
First job on the makeup on counter: I was 15, and it was a part-time job, inside JCPenney.
How you won the national competition: In the first round of auditions, 600 Sephora employees tried out. We had to create perfect skin. Then I got a call back for the second audition, in L.A., where we had to create a Marilyn Monroe look. Then I was called back, to compete in New York. It was so surreal. We had to create an editorial and runway look. I was terrified. When I saw my model come out, which meant I had won, I was just like, “Oh, my God.”
Most poignant on-the-job moment: I did makeup for a girl who had cancer, in Portland. She lost her eyebrows, and I showed her what she could do with her eyebrows so that the pencil stayed on. Her mother cried, she cried, and afterward, I cried, too.
Biggest misconception about makeup: It doesn’t create someone else. It brings out your inner beauty.
Must-have makeup item: Mascara. Because eyes tell everything.

Kat Von D Has More Makeup Coming Soon!
Excuse the fuzzy phone shot, but pictured is The Luckiest Girl Alive (tm) getting to meet my idol, Kat Von D, and talk with her about makeup.
Kat even dished up a secret: Her mega-popular tattoo concealer is coming in new shades and oil-free formulas.
If you're wondering, "What tattoo concealer?" check out Kat making her ink disappear.
What's My Skin Type? Here's How To Find Out
Confused about your skin type? So are we - often! - so we cribbed notes from Health magazine's special feature on Complexions 101.
YOU'RE DRY IF...
You don't need to blot around your nose to mop up excess grease throughout the day, and your face stays mostly matte from morning until night.
YOU'RE OILY IF...
There are oil marks on the tissue you dab on your face anytime of the day.
YOU'RE NORMAL IF...
You rock a natural glow all day long. Skin isn't too shiny, nor does it feel too tight or dry.
YOU'RE COMBINATION IF...
You see a small amount of oil near the nose, but your forhead and cheeks stay matte.
Now find your dream cream>
It's A Makeup Emergency! Quick, Hand Me That Gloss!
Like any beauty junkie, I've got a pretty respectable emergency stash of makeup occupying one whole desk drawer at work. And I mean, this is in addition to the makeup bag I haul around in my purse. Is this weird?
I tweeted my inventory - black Sephora eyeliner, Boscia oil-blotting paper, various lipsticks, clear gloss, and Clinique Almost Powder - then asked the Twitter crowd what they kept on hand. Take a peek at some of the responses...and then tell me, what makeup supplies do you keep stashed?
Fromflab2fit: I stash eyeliner, mascara, baby wipes, and Vaseline
DesignrGirl: Shu Uemura eyelash curler, Sephora blotting paper, Korres Quince Lip Butter, small jar of Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil + hand lotion!
Meesg: Oil blotter for face, lip balm, tons of perfume
thatmuse: I must have blotting powder with me at all times; if not it's a Code 10 situation
CindyLou: Lipgloss, lip balm, hand cream, nail file, perfume samples, mascara...
Celestia: Powder, liquid eyeliner, blush, gloss, and Rosebud Salve
daydreamcomplex: I'd have to have rosy cheeks for "emergencies" so a blush in just the right hint of pink will do!
givancic: My desk contains a bunch of Sephora samples of tinted moisturizer, gloss, mascara, eye shadow, and blush
OhGinelle: Benefit's Hello Flawless, MAKE UP FOR EVER eyeliner, Benefit's Badgal lash, oil blotting paper, and Chapstick!!!
CandidK: At my desk: lipstick, Chapstick, hand lotion, hairspray, comb, body mist. Let's not talk about purse...

Guest Blogger: iCandy's Can't-Live-Without Beauty
Hi my name is Alanna (aka iCandy). I am the time-wasting mastermind behind Face-A-Holic.
Everyone around me knows I can never say no to a good deal, or a pretty shade of pink! It seems like every time I walk into Sephora, I get a free Beauty Insider deluxe sample (every 100 dollars spent equals a deluxe sample if you’re a Beauty Insider). My favorite thing about discovering makeup and beauty products is finding that product that makes you think, “How did I ever live without this?” I adore those moments. Here are my top 5 can’t-live-without (can’t even imagine living without) beauty products.
This is at the top of my list of things I would bring with me on a desert island (even before water!). I tried this product on as a joke at Sephora while looking for cologne for my best guy friend, and he immediately took a picture of me. Neither of us could believe how great my skin looked!
I bought this to try because of the great price (only $8 at Sephora.com), and fell in love with it. I have medium skin that tans easily and regular pink blush sometimes looks unnatural on me, especially during the summer. I apply this right on top of my cheekbones for a soft
Everything you have heard or read about this mascara is true: It really is amazing! I first tried this as a Beauty Insider deluxe sample, and I couldn’t believe how sexy my lashes were. For some reason I go through mascara like my brother goes through girlfriends, and because of that I have tried too many to count! After trying BADgal I truly believe I have reached the finish line in my search for the perfect mascara. It makes my lashes big and bold and really opens up my eyes. The great thing about it is that it's not too intense for everyday wear, but still holds up at night when you want that extra sex appeal.
No beauty list would be complete without a fragrance. If there is one thing that is a must-have for every woman it is a scent. As much as I love perfume, I’ve never been able to stick to just one “signature”, but if I had to chose one from the perfumes currently in rotation, it would be Miss Dior Cherie. This fragrance is light and sweet and feminine, and just smells happy. It’s one of those smells that my boyfriend adores and every time I smell it on myself, I just feel all lit up.
I apply it on the insides of my wrists, my shoulders, and the back of my neck. My favorite thing about it is it just seems to melt into my skin as opposed to forming a cloud that announces my arrival to all with a nose. Here is my number one rule about fragrance: If your perfume shows up before you do, you are definitely wearing too much, but if it lingers for a second after you leave, you are wearing just the right amount.
I have very curly hair that dries out soooo easily. This product is amazing because for me it is a two-in-one. I use it as a regular conditioner in the shower, but I don’t rinse it all out, and it doubles as a leave-in anti-frizz treatment. I am constantly getting compliments on my curls and this conditioner is the reason why. With super-moisturizing ingredients like shea butter and jojoba oil, it’s no wonder this conditioner is so great. This is one of the few products that I will say is worth the semi-outrageous price tag! For a guaranteed good hair day, it is a very small price to pay.
