10 Trends That Shouldn't Stage A Comeback

The bloggers at Fashion Indie have always been trendspotters - but now they're watching for trends that need to not happen. Scrunchies? Dark lipliner? Frankly, we couldn't agree more. Here are the top 10 trends they hope never become trends:

1. Thong leotards over biker shorts- Wasn’t a good look when Kelly Kapowski from Saved By The Bell did it, and isn’t even a good look for 80s parties.

Picture 10

2. Shutter shades- We know once Kanye was spotted in these everyone went crazy over them, but shutter shades were never okay, and will never, ever be okay.

Picture 11

3. Visors- We'll just put it out there now to save everyone the $5: they aren’t ironic, they’re ugly.

Picture 12

4. Mesh- so not okay.

Picture 13

5. Crocheted tank tops - Just plain ugly.

6. Tying up dress shirts (a la ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’)- Keep your button up shirts buttoned up and tucked.

Picture 15

7. One size fits all shirts- Who thinks this is a good idea?

Picture 16

8. Guys in flared jeans/pants- This is not the 70s.

9. Dark lip liner- Beyond trashy.

10. Scrunchies- We really, really, REALLY hope this isn’t happening.

DDF's Skin Imaging System at Sephora!

Sephora staffer Caryn begins her consultation.

Roy Galifi from DDF presented Sephora staffers in the New York office a skinfully wonderful treat. He gave us each a personal evaluation with the brand’s exclusive Skin Imaging System that uses light transport to analyze complexion with noninvasive techniques. He started by taking pictures of both the face and inner forearm in order to compare the complexion with skin from an area that is well protected and relatively pure. With the two images, he gave a three-part analysis looking at melanin, hemoglobin, and collagen to assess sun damage, broken capillaries and elasticity. He then recommended a customized protocol with DDF products that addressed each person's unique needs.

My results? Sun damage was fairly little (thanks to my diligent daily use of sunscreen and my collection of cute sun hats for the beach), but my collagen showed that I’m a prime candidate for DDF Wrinkle Resist Plus Pore Minimizer (a little reminder of another thirty-something birthday next month!).

Wish you could get a complimentary evaluation too? DDF is one step ahead of you. They’ll be bringing consultants to Sephora stores across the country. Look for one near you! (Call store to confirm and for event hours.)

TRIED & TESTED: Lancome's Genifique

Hmm, youth proteins? We can all use those. Re-activate the skin you had as a baby? Sure, sign us up. In 7 days? Ok, get out of my way. Which is exactly how our very own Sephora.com producer Lauren Miller felt when we asked if she could test drive Lancome's new Genifique Youth Activating Concentrate. The results? Nothing short of spectacular. After using it for nearly 6 weeks, Lauren raves about this stuff. She said she's definitely noticed brighter skin, refined pores, and overall, a total improvement in texture. I mean, look at this before-and-after picture of her, huh?? MMM-hmmm, someone's been tapping into the fountain of youth!

Trendspotted: Glitter!

One of our favorite blogs, Trendhunter, just noticed something: Glitter is showing up all over the place.

"Just in time for summer: streaks of glitter are being smeared across trendsetters' sweaty summer skin. At first we were disapproving of this trend, as it harkened back to the rave era we'd prefer to leave abandoned in the '90s (if fat pants come back, we might actually step off the ledge). But the look has the distinct advantage of disguising the dark under-eye circles left behind from our late nights out trendspotting, thus transforming us into Twilight vampires gleaming in the sun. As long as street fashion gurus are pairing the trend with vintage dresses instead of fairy wings and candy necklaces, we'll jump on the glitter bandwagon."

We're thrilled they noticed...but what they're calling a summer trend, I've been calling a year-round staple.

Examples:

* Just a few weeks ago, I asked Sephora PRO Beauty expert Sara Biria to create a custom glitter-lidded look (See! Pretty, right?)

*I based my request a look she herself rocks often: Purple Glitter Smoky Lids (Also pretty! Click here to get that look).

*As if glitter lids weren't enough, I managed to find a way to dust my face in it when the occasion calls for it.

What's your take on glitter? Fun? Festive? Or totally over?

Dish & Tell: Staffers TELL ALL About Life At Sephora!

Ever wonder what it's like to work at Sephora? 12 staffers kiss, tell, and spill all on Sephora's Facebook fan page – read what they say by clicking the "Our Faves" tab (hint: Sephora gals seriously know their makeup!).

Then tell us: Do these sound like dream jobs?

Summerize Your Strands

It's nearing triple digits out there - and your hair has officially clocked out for the month. Between the beach, the city, and the pool (don't forget the office a/c, either), your strands don't stand a chance.

Unless you use our look good cheat sheet for summer hair. We've got 3 ways to tame even the most unruly of tresses.

PONY
Slick back your hair with a weather-proof pomade - try Carol's Daughter or Ouidad's new curl-controlling potion. Gather it at the nape of your neck, then gather locks into three sections and wind each around a large-barrelled curling iron. Don't brush it - just rake your fingers thruogh your hair to shake out the curls.

DOUBLE BRAIDS
Part your hair down the middle, then French braid both sides. Collect both braids at the back of your neck, then twist them into a low bun. And let the little flyaways hang loose; it keeps the style pretty, not princessy.

RUMPLED WAVES
Saturate the ends of air-dried hair with a beach spray (Phytoplage's has UV-proof protection in it). Then twirl 2-inch sections into tight twists and blast them with a blow-dryer for 5 seconds. Scrunch the ends, then make a jagged part with your fingers.

How Oak Trees Make You Look Young. For Free.

There’s a potent new anti-ager on the market – and guess who has it? Natural brand Korres is harnessing the power of oak trees to smooth over fine lines and wrinkles. And when paired with quercetin, a plant-derived flavonol (also full of flavonols? Red wine, of course), these two antioxidant powerhouses make for perfect skin food.

Korres’ new Quercetin & Oak Antiwrinkle Night Cream is too new for shelves. Unless you’re a Sephora shopper, in which case, you can try a sample straight from the lab before it even hits stores. Best of all, you can try that lab sample FREE.

With your next order on Sephora.com, enter KORRESOAK and it’ll automatically be added. Then when it does launch, be the first to rate and review it on sephora.com.

Here's what the full-size tube looks like!

Bridal Beauty: Romantic Look

The wedding day is (or should be!) all about romance and love. So of course, a popular bridal look is the romantic one.

“This is my favorite look,” said Sephora PRO Beauty Team member Sara Biria. “It’s all about playing up your inner beauty–being fun, girly, and seductive, but in a soft, romantic way. Plus, it’s probably the easiest look that a bride can create on her own for her wedding day.”

According to Sara, the first thing to think about is playing up to your complexion. If you have medium to deep skin tones, work with darker-tone pearl iridescents. If you’re more fair to medium, you should use lighter colors.

For me, Sara started with the eyes. She applied Smashbox Single Eye Shadow in Fizz ($16), a basic pink champagne, all over the eyelid, layering to adjust the intensity gradually. Next she used MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes in Purple Shade 6L, blending it into the shadow with a brush. She said, “You don’t want to have any harsh definition for this look. You also don’t want just your eyes to stand out or just your lips. It has to all flow into place.” She then patted loose pigments, MAKE UP FOR EVER Star Powder in Iridescent Beige 926 ($19), just in the center to give lids an extra pop, starting in the center and moving around in a half moon.

Because the color on the lids is subtle, Sara said you can play up your mascara more. We used Dior DiorShow Black Out Waterproof Mascara ($24). False lashes are also an option, or individual lashes could play up a superflirty look perfectly.

After finishing your complexion, bronzer is next. For the romantic look, use a matte bronzer, not a shimmer, to define the cheekbones. Sara brushed on Guerlain Terracotta Mineral Flawless Bronzing Powder ($65) right under the cheekbone, extending it out to the edge, toward the middle of my ear.

According to Sara, "Blush is very important because it’s going to put the whole look together. So with your eyes and lips both being soft, blush is going to give you that contour and definition.” She applied a shimmer blush, Bare Escentuals bareMinerals All-Over Face Color in Rose Radiance ($18), on the apples of my cheeks.

Sara suggested for the lips something subtle, soft, and definitely pink, whether it’s beige, nude, or bright. Again, it depends on your complexion. For a deeper skin tone, stick to a darker pink. You can add a gold shimmer gloss to give a natural highlight. If you have fair to medium tones, like me, wear something a little more nude or brighter. Sara lined and partially filled my lips with MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Lip Waterproof Lip Liner Pencil in Pink 15C ($17) and finished with NARS Lip Gloss in Greek Holiday ($24).

The results? I loved this look and could definitely see myself wearing it on my wedding day. The groom-to-be even weighed in. “Romantic over traditional, definitely,” he said. “But I like you best without any makeup,” he added. Good man. (But what a liar!)

Kiss Me, Pearl! The Secret To Shiny Lips

You're probably crushing on your Lorac Couture Shine Liquid Lipstick because the color is too rich to be called a gloss, even though it's a gloss. Or maybe you're loving the super moisturizing jojoba and sweet almond oils. No, wait! Maybe it's the hyaluronic acid for hydrating and helping fill in lines.

Wrong! The real reason you love it is because it's made with finely crushed light-reflecting Mother of Pearl for a high-gloss shine without the stick. Didn't know it was in there? Maybe you've just got an instinct for beauty.

Sandwich Delish: Try This Yummy Eye Makeup Trick

Awesome tip from Glamour magazine, even if it makes you hungry:

A sexy eye makeup look can be achieved by creating an "eyeshadow sandwich." Silly, yes, but they swear the name makes the technique super easy to remember--and get right.

You just need two shades: a light highligher shade--that's the "bread"--and slightly darker shade, like a bronze or a copper. Yup, you guessed it--that color is "the filling." Start by applying the lighter shade on lids, then add the medium tone in the crease and slightly above the crease. Finish up with more highlighter right on the brow bone. Dab the highlighter in the inner V of your eye and add a thin line of eyeliner at the base of top lashes and finish with mascara.

From the Ewwww Files: Funky Plastic Surgery

Complete this sentence:

"I'm not a believer in plastic surgery, but if I opted for it, I'd get _________."

a) liposuction
b) a tummy tuck
c) collagen injections
d) a cankle lipo

Yes, cankle lipo. BeautyBlitz reports the rise of a whole new set of plastic surgery procedures that add a new level of cosmetic paranoia to our lexicon. Example: Surgical shortening of the second toe, commonly referred to as "raptor toe," to prevent long second toes from hanging over the edge of an open-toe pump. Or, especially now that it's swimsuit season, belly button makeovers.

To quote the nefarious (but observant) Mugatu, I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Who's signing up for this?

COMING SOON TO SEPHORA: Illamasqua

At long last, the uber-artistic Brit beauty brand Illamasqua is making its way to U.S. shores via yours truly -- Sephora! (Who else did ya think?) As expected, in-the-know beauty junkies across the nation obsessed with the brand knew it was just a matter of time before their pretty wishes would come true. Known for their night time makeup and dark, artistic persona (think 1920's Berlin), Illamasqua is all about individuality and, as they say, "finding your alter ego." Expect the unexpected with this makeup line: emerald polishes, beyond swoopy false lashes, plum-black lip shades, and stage-worthy eye makeup in vivid, dance club-worthy colors. Think of it as your ultimate nighttime makeup brand. Shop the entire line July 21st on Sephora.com, or at our new Times Square store on July 30. It'll also be available in more stores come Fall. Want a sneak peek? Check out these gorgeous looks we're featuring on their Brand Boutique on Sephora.com. SO gorgeous, right? I am totally rockin' those emerald digits and baby blue lashes. Sigh. Can't wait.

SNEAK PREVIEW: Hot New Brush, Hot New Product

Believe it or not, what you’re looking at is a mascara brush. Yes, that’s it’s real shape, and no, the beauty world has never seen anything like it before. Turns out, adding a few curves to a brush adds serious fringe benefits:

• S-shaped curve brush allows full contact of lashes to grasp and load even the shortest lash
• In a single stroke immediately build dramatic volume for full body lashes without clumps
• Short, silk-like bristles instantly bulk up lashes
• Longer bristles sculpt lashes for fanned-out effect

Only one beauty brand has this brush (can you you guess who?), and for just 48 hours next week, Sephora shoppers will be able to purchase it on a first come, first serve basis. Stay tuned, ladies and gents. We’ll let you know the exact time and date next week.

HINT: Last time this company launched a mascara, Sephora shoppers got to purchase it during a sneak-preview sale just like this—and it sold out within hours.
