What's The Best Beauty Advice You've Ever Gotten?

Last week, we posted a roundup of our best beauty tips - turns out that was a good start, but our brilliant and obviously gorgeous Twitter readers have plenty more to add. So we asked 'em: What's the best ebauty advice you've ever received?

  1. mailelalayna: Heat your eyelash curler for a few seconds with the hairdryer...helps curl better and hold better!
  2. empire_mj: Use an eyeliner brush to apply mascara to lash roots - it works surprisingly well
  3. edenofgarden: ALWAYS use primer potion before applying shadow!
  4. geminiamr05: Always moisturize and drinks lots of water - it's good for your skin and hydrates it
  5. rokeyesIcon_lock: Apply bronzer in a sweeping "3" on each side of the face, starting at the forehead, onto the nose, and then across the chin.
  6. LindsayMax: Shaping my dark eyebrows was the greatest face enhancement I've made. It's amazing what changing your arch can do.
  7. SunfyshIcon_lock: Best tip: Ask yourself, "Is it worth the wrinkle?"
  8. omgxitskatiexx: Use a business card behind your lashes when you apply mascara...nifty trick I learned from @RiceBunny.
  9. tayyyy15Icon_lock: Wash your face EVERY night no matter how tired you are!!
  10. JRad14: Blend! Blend! Blend! Using good brushes and blending well sets the amateurs apart from true artists.
  11. JessiG88: Always leave conditioner in your hair for at least 5 min in the shower (instant deep conditioner).
  12. GatheringsOn3rd:You should be complimented on how beautiful YOU are, not your makeup (in other words, makeup should not be very noticeable).
  13. amberrashelle: To always keep a SMILE on your face! :)
  14. lasgarrett: Baby wipes are wonderful to use as a face cleanser/makeup remover
  15. CobrettaIcon_lock:Always put your powder on with a brush.
  16. charnell: Blue eyeliner to make the whites of your eyes pop and mascara only on the outer lashes.

Hair Today, Try Tomorrow: Your 5-Minute Tip

I got a trim and a tip this weekend from my fabulous hairdresser (love a man that makes me look good): How many hair products are you loading in your locks right now? Gel? Mousse? Straightening cream? Avoid product overload - and the shine-stealing affect it has on hair - by pre-mixing these products in your palm first, then applying. You'll use less, and in most cases, hair stylist Troy assures me that less is what most gals out there need to use.

The only exception? Smoothing serum, which should be the last touch. You'll need just a dime-sized squirt if you've got fine hair, or a quarter if it's coarse. Troy suggests concentrating on the tips and the little hairs around your part and hairline.

Mani, Pedi, Scary: Alarming Fingertip Trends

Last week we called out a new nail trend: Matte fingernail polish (which, judging by the comments, some of you will be rockin', and some of you will be avoidin').

BeautyBlitz did us one better: They found nail trends capable of frightening even our most seasoned beauty editors. Marbled manis? Nails with more decorations than a birthday cake? P for pass, please.

Take a look at the other trends, then tell us: does matte polish suddenly seem not-so-scary?

Your Ticket To An A-List Facial

If you didn't already know it, Kate Somerville is a facialist to the stars. Yes, really: Her spa in L.A. is a second home to Nicole Ritchie, Molly Sims and Kerry Washington.

So what if you don't live in LaLa, need a stylist, or show up in People magazine? You fake it. Sephora now carries Kate's line of skin-soothing masks and complexion perfecting scrubs. All you do is add the following:

1) Slip into your plushiest terrycloth robe or silk dressing gown.

2) Bring 3 cups of water to a boil, then pour it into a bowl. Drape a towel over your head, then steam your face for about 5 minutes to open up your pores.

3) Apply Kate's ExfoliKate enzyme scrub and let ingredients like papaya and pineapple gently (and naturally!) exfoliate.

4) Follow up with a mask that deep-clean pores. Spread a thin layer over your face, then, when it dries, rinse with warm water, and blot dry with a towel.

5) Moisturize with her skin-plumping vitamin-packed Quench Hydrating Face Serum, and twinkle like a star.

Do You Line In Liquid?

There are two types of girls in this world:

1. Perfectly happy with pencil eyeliners

2. Ladies who liquid line

Liquid liner has its perks - bold hues that last forever - but even the most steady-handed among us can tell you, liquid liner takes practice. Lots of practice.

As a fan of cuts in lines, cheatsheets, shortcuts, or anything designed to make life easy, I'm a huge fan of LORAC's Front Of The Line PRO liner. A pencil! It's a liquid! It's a pencil! It's a liquid!

Ditto to Karen of Makeup & Beauty Blog, who writes:

"Gone are the days of uneven, messy, Shakes the Clown lines, and I owe it all to the bad-assness that is Lorac’s Front of the Line Pro ($22).

Drawing crisp, dark, dramatic lines is easy-peasy with this liquid pen liner.

The genius lies in Lorac’s firm felt tip pen. It glides smoothly against skin, depositing sharp lines with precision — fantastic for cat eyeliner looks.

And the staying power? To die for."

15 Questions With Illamasqua's Creative Director

Let's play....
15 questions with Alex Box
, Creative Director of British beauty brand Illamasqua.

B&TB: What’s the one product you'd grab if your house was on fire?
Alex Box: My signature Illamasqua red lipstick in Box – as hot and as lethal as the fire itself!

B&TB:Which friend would you let make you over?
Alex Box: Danielle Epworth, a best friend and first assistant.

B&TB:What beauty product do you save for date night?
Alex Box: I never save anything for 'best', every night’s a date night!

B&TB:Which of your guy friends takes longer than you, to get ready?
Alex Box: Ha ha, all of them they wear more make-up than me.

B&TB:If you could create your own miracle beauty product, what would it be?
Alex Box: Liquid youth – the time machine in a tube!

B&TB:What's your best beauty tip?
Alex Box: Always blot and powder your lip line. Everyone, whatever age, gets lipstick bleed, so blot and powder.

B&TB: What beauty products do you love to splurge on?
Alex Box: Skin care. I'm a skin care junkie, if I don't get my fix I'm a broken woman.

B&TB:What is your signature scent?
Alex Box: Ah, now this is my raison d'être, I'm very secretive about my smell and I've had a lifelong obsession with perfume. I’ve always layered many scents.

B&TB:Finish this sentence – “I’m on an endless quest for the perfect…”
Alex Box: “…eyebrows”. Illamasqua Eye Brow Cake is a godsend.

B&TB:How old were you when you were allowed to wear make-up, and how old were you when you actually started wearing make-up?
Alex Box: There were never any 'do's and 'don’ts' regarding make-up in my childhood. I would make up and paint anything that stood still long enough, including all my toys and my dad! My parents encouraged self-expression. I remember trying to look like Toyah, using only three face paint crayons, some of my mum’s foundation and blackcurrants squashed to make blusher. I was seven.

B&TB:How many beauty products does it take to get you ready?
Alex Box: I think like anyone, if I have a lot of time I use more products. I do like to streamline my personal kit once in a while, but more always creeps in. It’s an occupational hazard! In answer to your question, I’d say I use one face product, three for eyebrows, three blusher/contouring products, three for eyes, three for lips – gosh that's 13!

B&TB:Who is your celebrity beauty icon?
Alex Box: I don't really look to celebrities; I think everyone is their own creature of creation. But if I had to pick two women whose look I love, one from the past and present, I would say Joan Crawford and PJ Harvey.

B&TB: The last thing you bought at Sephora?
Alex Box: I love Sephora and always visit the one under the Louvre in Paris. The last thing I bought was an anti-fatigue facemask.

B&TB: “I try never to be seen not wearing…”
Alex Box: “…an extreme amount of accessories and cavalier attitude.”

B&TB:One beauty product you recommend to ALL of your girlfriends?
Alex Box: Only one?! That's really tough. It’d have to be Illamasqua Lipstick in Box – it’s been my lifetime’s quest to find the perfect red, so in the end I made one! And I know you said just name one but I’m going to sneak Sealing Gel in there as well, because it makes your powder products so much more versatile.

Best Beauty Advice Ever

Need a beauty tip or two? How about 13?

#1: Love your shampoo but hate buildup? Mix a teaspoon of cider vinegar into your shampoo bottle every other month.

#2: For lipstick that lasts forever: Use a lip pencil instead of lipstick, then apply a lip balm over it so your lips won't feel dry.

#3: Add a teaspoon of poppy seeds to any lotion - taa daa! You've got a skin-softening scrub.

#4: Want dry hair pronto without the friction from a towel? Use paper towels:wrap a 5-inch section of hair around a one and squeeze!

#5: Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before heading outside, and then again every 2 hours.

#6: At the beach, slick coconut oil in your hair and loosely braid it. Post beach, you'll have perf, shiny waves (thanks for the tip, Oscar Blandi!)

#7: DIY! Make this moisture-quenching hair mask: 1/2 an avocado + 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Leave on locks for 20 mins, then rinse.

#8: Creating a smoky eye? Use an angled brush to smudge shadow all over your lid up to the crease- it'll make blending a snap!

#9: An extra coat of mascara at the outer corners of the eyes will help visually lift your peepers!

#10: If your lipstick always fades faster than your lipliner (and leaves you with ring-around-the-mouth), try a nude liner instead.

#11: You already know to condition hair from midshaft down. But if you've got really oily/fine hair, condition first, wash second!

#12: Rub Vaseline over dark spots and scars before applying a spray tan - prevents them from getting darker.

#13: Pat your lipstick on instead of dragging color across your lips. Keeps the pigments brighter and truer to what's in the tube.

The Big Brush Off: The Essential Tool Every Makeup

How often do you slap down your plastic for a makeup brush and then think to yourself, "Do I really need this?"

The short answer: Yes. The secret to flawless makeup application really does lie in owning (and using, ladies) the right tools. While you certainly don't need one of every brush out there, a good set of basics will give you noticeably better results. A good starter set: Sephora's 6-piece brush set that - bonus - comes in a leatherette case for safe keeping.

What if you'd like to start even smaller than that? We asked Sephora PRO Beauty Team members Gilbert Soliz and Sara Biria what one brush was their top must-not-ever-apply-makeup-without:

Gilbert:
"One of them would have to be Professionnel Platinum Small Shader Brush #17. I prefer small brushes because the smaller the brush, the finer the detail. This one is great for applying eyeshadow really close to the lash line, outer edge, and lower lash line, plus it shades very well. It's a natural hair, too. It's a brush I cannot live without."

Sara:
I love the Professionnel Platinum Natural Crease Brush #10 brush. It not only is a must-have, it's the only brush that can create a smooth, seamless blend on the eye. My favorite tip to share is this: Start on the outer corner of the crease of your lid, and start to blend softly, going back and forth, kind of like a windshield wiper. Don't press down on the shadow (like you'd do with an eraser!), but just dust the brush across the top of the shadow."

Reason To Shop: 'Cuz It's On Sale

If you didn't already know this, consider it the ultimate public service announcement.

Sephora has an entire page dedicated to sales. You're welcome.

Not just last season's bubblegum pink gloss or the teal shadows we all loved last year but are over right now. It's good stuff, like Stila's 6-shade precious pearl palette. Worth $130, was $40, is now $20. Or Juicy Couture's lip gloss charm bracelet that was $58, but is now $29. Or my fave: Spray glitter for $10. Zang!

Endless Summer: Sunny, Shiny Strands

It's the tail end of summer, otherwise known as the point at which you should look like you've spent the last 90 days soaking up every ray of sun available at each and every beach and swimming pool within a 50 mile radius of your house. If you haven't, girl what have you been doing all summer?

One of the easiest ways to fake a well-enjoyed summer - aside from bronzer - is hair dye. And yes, this is something you can D.I.Y. with a little pre-planning. The first rule is the most important: Pick a shade that's only 1 to 2 shades lighter than your current haircolor. Natural sunlight does not double as a bottle of peroxide.

Find your shade>

Next, just tint the hair that frames your face. For a truly sun-kissed look, L.A. stylist Adir Abergel suggests focusing on the midshaft down (style inspiration: Beach babe Gisele). Bonus: no roots.

Lastly, keep your strands shiny, not fried by only washing your locks every other day, and using a conditioner designed for colored hair. It'll protect your shade while giving your hair a big drink of moisture.

Trend Alert: Matte Nail Polish

Hello, I’m Siobhan, also known as The Nailphile, and I’m visiting today to tell you about Sephora by OPI’s new limited edition matte nail colors. They’ve taken three classic shades, Domestic Goddess, a bright purple crème, the unforgettable Metro Chic, and What’s A Tire Jack?, and made them uber-matte!

This season, we have many choices when it comes to matte nail lacquers, and I found that the formula of Sephora by OPI’s is truly a standout. Each of the three shades applied smoothly and effortlessly, just like a regular Sephora by OPI nail color. As always, both the brush and the formula were easy for me to control, allowing for quick and easy application, completely opaque and even in only two thin coats.

It is recommended that a base and top coat not be used with these polishes, and an additional trick I employ when applying mattes is to allow the first coat to dry for a minute or two, just long enough to become matte, before applying the second. Sephora by OPI’s mattes are very well pigmented and dry quickly, but are not so much so as to cause difficulty in application or to give a chalky appearance to the finished manicure, as you can see below. Finally, matte crèmes which are not chalky!

Metro Chic – I didn’t think it could be made more chic, but I was wrong! Matte makes it even better.

Domestic Goddess – this is a fantastic grape crème, which is truly a unique matte shade.

What’s A Tire Jack? – blackest black made matte, this is the one I most anticipated. How dramatic!

Sephora by OPI has really thrilled me with these matte nail colors, taking some of their best shades and transforming them into an exceptional matte formula. Kudos to Sephora!

Gut Instincts: The Newest Accessory You DIY

What rhymes with ear nut, pushes the limit on cotton, and is apparently the hottest new accessory for the fellas?

Believe it: The Gut is poised and set to be fall's most major must-have.

First the New York Times, then beauty blog Jezebel first picked up on this..uh..growing trend. The New York Times notes true gut is too pronounced to be blamed on the slouchy cut of a T-shirt, too modest in size to be termed a proper beer gut, developed too young to come under the heading of a paunch.

Somewhere in the middle, boys, is your ticket to looking fashionable.

Girls, are we for or against this?

Read The Review, Then Score Your Free Facial

If you're in the NYC area, guess what? Until 7 pm tonight, AmorePacific is serving up free facials at Sephora's Soho store.
We sent New York beauty junkie Shy Winkfield is to get her glow on with AmorePacific facialist Melissa. Her review? "OMG!"

"I'm beyond pleased with the results! My skin is clean, bright and well-hydrated, and more importantly, there is no sign of irritation or redness.

I have extremely sensitive skin and up until now, I was limited to Aveeno and Origin products. I'm happy to say that I'm adding AmorePacific to my skin regimen. I saw immediate results after she applied the cleanser and enzyme peel. The lip treatment is super hydrating and does not leave a tacky finish."

Interview With A Glampire: Scoring Twilight Lips

We love Twilight. That's been well documented on this blog.

That means the milisecond DuWop launched a Twilight-inspired ruby red lip stain, we bit. But if you think Sephora girls are too preoccupied with finding men whose skin glitters to accurately review a lip kisser, we're offering up a third opinion from Aly Walansky from eBeautyDaily who hasn't even read Twilight (scandal!), yet is still addicted to the red:

Based on the sexily-bloody movie Twilight, and from the same people who brought us from the very awesome DuWop, Twilight Venom is a shimmering, crimson-colored lip color packaged in a super-fun venom-laced liquid lip conditioner.

When trying Venom out, you should shake first – this is actually to signify the “blending of human and vampire worlds” and then continue to reapply until you reach your favorite color intensity. It’s also a limp plumper, and contains argan, avocado, and olive oils as well as vitamin E. So your lips will be swollen and crimson…just like, well, you know.

I think vampire lore just got even more fashionable.

XOXO And They're Gone: Banishing Undereye Bags

Full disclosure: Nope, I haven't tried this. Give me another 24 hours.

Celeb makeup artist Andrew Sotomayor swears that even stubborn undereye circles can be banished with a little optical illusion: Use a white eyeliner pencil like Bare Escentuals Buxom Liner in white pearl to draw tiny x's on your undereye rings, then top with a concealer and blend.

Tic-tac-to, and the bags are gone.

Razor Burn: We Need To Talk.

I'm a sucker for packaging, so a cute little jar with a silver topper and a vintage-style crown on the label would get worked into my beauty routine just so everyone could see what cute taste I had. So it's a real plus that Shavewok's The Cool Fix actually works.

The thick liquid formula is combo of glycolic, salicylic and phytic acid that exfoliate dead skin cells and kill bacteria so hair doesn't get trapped. Trapped hair = icky bumps.

But what really boosts the, "Oooh, I like it!" factor is the Mediacalm Complex. Made from Boerhavia Root, which is an anti-inflammatory plant from India (see the things you learn here?), this tingling ingredient instantly cools skin and calms redness. Redbumpyscratchy skin, you are no match.

Let the Silk'n Shine In

This past weekend, in honor of Woodstock's 40th anniversary, I watched some footage of the festival on DVD. Holy hairy armpits, batman!

Equipped with Silk'n SensEpil, our laser hair removal tool, I decided make my first pit stop on the road to a razor-free life.

Treating both of my underarms with the painless pulses of hair-destroying light took only three minutes, tops. About six more quickie sessions, and I should be perma-smooth!

Peace, love, and lasers, people.

Tell me: Where should I test my Silk'n next??

City Girl Comes To Sephora

Guess who's coming to Sephora?

Major hint: She lives in The City.

Whitney Port has become the newest member of eco-friendly cosmetic company, Cargo PlantLove, creating a hot pink lipstick called Eve Pinky, set to hit Sephora stores this week. Woot! Woot!

But that's not the only reason to love the girl, her braids, or her lip pick. Like all PlantLove products, Whitney’s Eve Pinky is gorgeous and good for the planet (hello, ECOCERT™ makeup line!). Plus, two dollars from the sale of every Eve Pinky lipstick will be donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Pretty sweet.

How Dry I Am (And How Late I Woke Up)

Some days, a gal has time for a proper shower with shampoo and everything.

Other days, let's just say legs are lucky if they get shaved.

I find that on days like this, the best defense is distraction - an artsy headband, those fancy chopsticks you picked up from Pier 1 but never actually eat with, a few well-positioned (and well pinned down) brooches, and voila! You've upgraded your style from the follicular equivalent of sweatpants to the LBD of locks.

Key to the success of these styles: Dry shampoo. Apart from zapping oil, dry shampoo is famous for giving strands a just-right texture that's perfect for styling - and anchoring decorative objects.

Has dry shampoo ever saved the day for you? Got similar style pics to share? Send them in!

Thanks to Hair Thursday for the shot.

We Dig: Dark Lips For Fall

Like us, WhoWhatWear Daily is all over strong, bold, lethal lips for fall. Our pick: Urban Decay in Confession, a film noir-inspired red. For their fave picks, the went a little lighter and a little brighter with these two faves:

Illamasqua Lipstick ($20) in Maneater
We'd heard about the amazing British beauty brand Illamasqua from our UK-dwelling friends for ages. Happily, their ravings about the line's fashion-forward spirit and cutting-edge products were right and now that the collection is carried at Sephora.com, we can enjoy it too. There are a number of don't-miss matte lipsticks we'd suggest, like Maneater (shown above) and Tramp, but definitely check out the entire range.

Lorac Breakthrough Performance Lipstick SPF 15 ($22) in Leading Lady
A good multi-tasker is always appreciated around the WhoWhatWear.com offices, so it's no wonder that we were excited about the new Breakthrough Performance Lipstick from Lorac. In addition to being paraben free, the lipstick's long-lasting formula is also kitted out with SPF 15 protection and the brand's exclusive anti-aging complex that helps boost collagen production. In short: healthy happy lips in a heartbreaking shade of red!

White Lights, Pretty Tippies: New Nail Polish Trend

Mega-stylist Rachel Zoe has a closet filled with leopard print, a healthy collection of patio dresses, and is frenemies with Nicole Richie. Newly added to her resume: Trend Reporter.

The Zoe Report's latest crave is white nail polish - though La Rach points out the hue should be less office supply White-Out, and more like a softer, opal-tinted shade. She's currently loving a Chanel lacquer, but with all due respect, we think we can trump that: Sephora Brand carries 3 different shades of white, and for a scant $5 a bottle, who cares if you wind up taking a pass on this trend?

We'd try the following:
Coco
(Bright white)

Litchi
(China doll white)

Vanille
(Sheer ecru)

Calling Kat Von D Fans!

Don't miss tonight's episode of LA Ink! We got the inside scoop that Kat will be talking about her two new fragrances, Saint and Sinner. They both launch exclusively at Sephora this September (that's just a few weeks away!).

Saint (in the white bottle) is a sweet, addictive blend of caramel, vanilla and jasmine, while Sinner (in the red) plays up a dark and mysterious side with hints of vetiver, plum and cinnamon. I got to try them out at Sephora's editor preview event and ... I love 'em both!

Are you a V.I.B.? If you are, you can try Saint and Sinner now. Enter promo code VIBKVD on sephora.com for a sample of each.

Vital Juice Hearts Illamasqua

Are you a Vital Juice reader? Guess what these in the know girls are buzzing about:

"For the Topshop set (isn't that all of us?), we've discovered something else you just might fancy.

From across the pond comes Illamasqua, an edgy line of makeup with a heart of gold. (The never-tested-on-animals brand also supports worthy causes.)

Currently, it's sold only at Sephora Times Square and online at sephora.com, but the Brit hit (Sienna Miller's a fan) will be making an appearance at 26 more Sephora stores by October. We braved the midtown madness and went barmy for these finds:

Eye-catching Nail Varnishes ($14) help you make a bold statement. Try the daring hues on your tootsies if you just want to dip your toe in the trend.

Eye Liner Cake ($21), a pressed-powder product, lets you create a dramatic look.

Lightweight Liquid Metal ($24) adds shimmer wherever you need it: on your eyes, cheekbones, or body. Go for the gold!
