Tried & Tested: Oscar Blandi's "Every Other Day" Regimen Set

With the Fall season upon us (don't forget to set back your clocks this Sunday!), I am always wary about washing my hair everyday for fear of drying it out, ruining my color, or suffering a serious case of hair static, flyaway madness. I've always been a fan of Oscar Blandi's Pronto Dry Shampoo so when I heard he was coming out with a specially-priced "Every Other Day" Pronto Regimen Set made for gals like me who alternates her shampoo sessions, I couldn't wait to try it.

The set starts with Oscar's Instant Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner, which you use one day, then the next day you would use Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray and style as usual. The shampoo and conditioner smells amazing and has the Pronto signature Lemon Verbena scent that lasts a long time. It definitely left my strands super swingy and bouncy the whole day, but of course, I have stick straight strands and rarely use gel or anything like that to weigh it down (hmmm, ok, I do use a light spritz of Oscar's Lacca Hairspray to "bulk" it up a bit).

On the "skip the shampoo" day I sprayed in the Pronto Dry Shampoo Spray at the roots, gave it a good brushing front/back/upside down, then set it in rollers for some extra body. Gorgeous. It totally left my hair soft and fresh, lightly scented with the the smell of Lemon Verbena. I like that it didn't weigh my hair down at all thanks to a balanced blend of gentle starches, plus rice and wheat proteins that absorbs icky oil, but also adds body. My hair actually felt really soft, like baby hair. If your hair is flat like mine, finish with Lacca Hairspray to add a little "thickness." And since you alternate the products, the set lasts a while - I am hoping it will get me through the Fall season till I have to switch to a heavier conditioner for Winter.

Till then, no more stinky second-day hair for me. It's tons of volume and fresh-scented strands all the way - at least through the Fall season. This "Every Other Day" Pronto Regimen Set is definitely a hair 'do!

Still stumped for Halloween? Here's a costume idea from Too Faced creator Jerrod Blandino

We've been asking our brands the question of the week: "What are you going to be for Halloween?" We got this response from our friend Jerrod Blandino, Founder of Too Faced cosmetics, and seriously loved it. If you are an SNL fan, then you MUST know Gilly. We *heart* her :) And if you don't like this look, then "saww-rreh!!" (Sorry, in Gilly-speak).

From Jerrod (aka: Gilly):

“I'm going to be Gilly from Saturday Night Live. I am wearing a huge, brown afro with a little pink bow on the side. I’ll be dressed in a pink and red heart-print jumper with a white cap-sleeve shirt underneath and black maryjanes over knee high socks. My face will be done with Primed & Poreless Skin Soothing Face Primer for a flawless, youthful finish. (Gilly is in grade school.) I'm going to rim my eyes in glittering pink using Starry Eyed Liquid Eyeliner in Mad Mad Love. I'll pump up my lashes up with our new (and exclusive to Sephora!) LASHLIGHT Mascara, using its Optic Blu LED light up wand to give me Gilly’s glossy, jet black lashes! My cheeks will be a babydoll pink with my Brightening Blush in Pinch My Petals layered with a little Lip Of Luxury Lipstick in Marcia Marcia Marcia to really get that cupie doll look. My lips will have a hint of little-girl color using my Mirror Mirror Gloss in I Know You Want Me.”

Our Favorites: Solid Fragrance Rings

Now you can have your perfume application (almost literally) at your fingertips. Several of our latest scents are available as gorgeous wearable perfume rings, are are available only at Sephora. Twist each ring top, and you’ll find a solid perfume pot to touch up your fragrance wherever you go.

Marc Jacobs Lola Solid Perfume Ring
It’s a multicolored metal rose on the outside and a lovely fruit and floral scent on the inside. Marc Jacob’s Lola fragrance is luscious and layered, just like the petals of a rose. Notes of pink peppercorn, pear, grapefruit, rose, peony, geranium, vanilla, tonka bean, and musk all play on the senses—fantastic for the flirty girl about town.

Kat Von D Solid Perfume Ring
Now here’s a rose of a different color: shiny black. For the rocker girl with ever-changing moods, Kat Von D’s entry in the ring roundup contains two different fragrances. Between the skull-ring band and rose top you’ll find both Kat’s Saint and Sinner scents.

Is the angel on your shoulder yelling louder than the devil? Then dip into the Saint pan, a sweet and innocent floral essence. And when the devil is pushing the petal to the metal, it’s time for Sinner’s seductive scent. A perfect adornment for you True Blood-inspired vampire ladies this Halloween? We think yes!

Michael Kors Very Hollywood Solid Perfume Cocktail Ring
Whether you’re dressing up as Liberace, a Hollywood starlet, a fairy princess, or even as yourself this Halloween, this pretty pink gem is flashy, fun, and glamorous. Heads will turn as onlookers catch that awesome “rock” you’re wearing, and admirers will inch ever nearer to get a hint of that intoxicating blend of sparkling mandarin, gardenia, and vetiver. If you’re looking for showy, yet sophisticated accoutrement, this is it.

Dior's Dr. Saddick @ Sephora Times Square

Dior's Global Medical Adviser (cough, skincare genius, cough) Dr. Sadick graced Sephora Times Square on Friday and, as expected, he had all the secrets to glowing winter skin up his sleeve. Here are the goods:

HYDRATION: Old Man Winter makes quite the dry mess of our skin, so there is nothing more important than moisturizing throughout the day. Want low-maintenance? Dior HydrAction Deep Hydration Sorbet Cream is the only 24-hour moisturizer on the market, so you only have to apply it once in the morning.

SUN PROTECTION: Summer might be a distant memory, but sunscreen shouldn't be. UVA/UVB rays still damage skin cells in the winter, so you must must must apply SPF year-round. Try Dior HydrAction Hydra-Protective UV Milk SPF 20 which has SPF20/PA++ plus a special complex that nourishes dry skin.

HUMIDIFIER: Lathering and slathering moisturizers to no avail? Add a humidifier to your bedroom, stat. It adds much-needed moisture to the air, and alas, to your Sahara-dry skin as well.

SHOWER: Baby it's cold outside, but that hot shower isn't your friend. Hot water dries your skin out big time, especially during the dry winter months, so opt for luke-warm water whenever possible.

Dashing Diva: Get Your Nails Into the Halloween Spirit

Halloween is right around the corner, and for a truly great Halloween costume, the devil is in the details. It’s all about accessories.

The sad truth is, I have procrastinated on my costume more times than I care to admit. It’s not that I forgot. In the weeks leading up to Halloween, I am constantly reminded about it as I hear friends and even strangers on the bus discussing their painstaking preparations to assemble, sew, and glue their ideas together.

Meanwhile, my personal Halloween success rate is dictated by whether or not I’m wearing a group costume. (It’s like going to the gym—sometimes you need a partner to motivate you.) Every time I go with a solo costume, the big day arrives, and I’m scrambling to find something in my closet that will work.

But that’s not happening again. One thing that inspired me to really get it right this time was Dashing Diva’s Design Nails On The Go series, which is perfect for Halloween. Seeing the NY company’s cool nail sets reminded me that even the smallest details can help make a great costume.

Thinking of dressing up as a pirate? Go for the Skulls & Diamonds. Queen of Hearts? It’s all about the French Hearts. A vampire? Check out the Black French set. There are dozens of costume ideas that could go with each of the three sets.

Each box includes 28 high-quality, glossy nails (in 14 sizes) that are super-thin and easy to apply. Adhesive is automatically attached to the backs, so the nails simply stick on and stay put for up to two days. At only $10 a set, it’s a cheap ticket item to make your look ultra-convincing on Fright Night.

Acne Is Whackne: Surprising Facts About Oil

Even if your skin tends to be on the dry side, we all have our days when even well-behaved skin turns into a Texas oil field. Need to keep your sebum

1. Estrogen is a natural oil suppressant. Which explains why, around that already special time of the month when testosterone is up and estrogen it down, you get a fresh crop of red spots.

Combat it: Grab a face wash with salicylic acid in it. This wonder juice speeds up cell turnover so your oil never even gets a fair shot at clogging up those pores. Find them here>

2. Oil production spikes at 11 a.m. every day. I.e., when you're sitting at your desk, fully made up, and totally unable to wash your face.

Combat it: Oil's mortal enemy is oil-absorbing clay - mix a dollop of clay mask into your morning face wash. Or, if you've got oily skin, K.O. oil all day with a clay-based foundation.
Shop clay masks>
Get clay-based foundation>

3. Mineral-based makeup is less likely to cause breakouts. Right, we can hear you saying Duh! from here, but think about all the times you're flooding your pores with makeup and don't even realize it: lunchtime workout, sweaty subway ride, too-hot office...see? We thought so.

Combat it: If you're guilty of unintentionally clogging your own pores, switch to a mineral-based powder foundation. Even if you're a liquid foundation lover, there are new formulas available that mix the best of both worlds.

Tried + Tested: Josie Maran's Bronzing Argan Oil

So the autumn season is officially here--summer whizzed by with the blink of an eye; no more half days at the office, it's 6pm and the sky tells you it's practically time for bed. Gone are the days of the exquisite feeling of the sizzling sun beating down on you as you lazily rocked in the hammock, a chilled Corona in tow-- and simultaneously, the (safe) tan you were acquiring is just the icing on the cake. Sigh. Now that fall has made its arrival, you can feel yourself slowly getting paler and pastier. Double sigh.

But mercifully, a supermodel showed me the way to keep that summer glow, even when the sun has decided to take a sabbatical. And that model is organic gorgeous glamour gal Josie Maran and her Bronzing Argan Oil. You know some gals say they can't leave the house without curling their eyelashes, or dabbing their pout with a lip gloss? For me, I can't leave the apartment without applying Bronzing Argan Oil. I don't care if I miss the 7:40am bus and am late to work (again) or that my stomach is growling and begging me to eat that bowl of cereal before I leave the house, if time is -a -tickin', I will choose putting on her rich and shimmery product.

When I had the pleasure of meeting Josie again this summer, she generously gave me a bottle and little did i know what I would be in store for......'coz here's the rub: Ladies & gentlemen, yours truly is turning the milestone "Dirty Thirty" next year. There, I said it. And you know what? I'm embracing it, actually looking forward to it. Since slathering on her Bronzing Argan Oil, I have been showered with compliments regarding my skin and complexion. (Would I be too immodest if I told you it was practically daily?) and I owe it all to Josie Maran.

Let me give you the lowdown on argan oil:
Argan oil has numerous virtues and is from Morocco and has been used by Moroccan women for centuries to restore skin, hair and nails. It's rare and special and highly effective. It protects against oxidation which is the cause of skin aging and will maintain your skin's resilience, smoothness & radiance. This oil from the Moroccan tree quenches dryness & helps fill in lines. And although the texture is rich and creamy, it holds promise for oily skin(it's true: In one study, applying argan oil reduced sebum production). Josie's product not only delivers all of this, but the bronzing element has blessed me with that radiant dewy, golden glow. The product sinks in your skin very quickly and gives you a coveted shimmery complexion. I've even deliberately omitted the step of foundation and powder, opting for that more natural, healthy and youthful look that her Bronzing Argan Oil delivers. ---remember, don't mask, but enhance! And enhance it does. Enhance the inner 20 year old in my skin---- that and a golden tan all year round.

And yes, I still get carded, get asked if I attend SF State by college students, and once in a blue moon, get hit on by someone who would get in trouble with the law if I dated him. And I just smirk - who knew the act of adding Josie Maran's Bronzing Argan Oil to my morning ritual would result in all this??? I think instead of calling it the "Dirty Thirty" I'm gonna call it the "Flirty Thirty". ;)

WIN IT: SEPHORA Collection goodies from Venexiana

Paging all vampire-crazed beauties (yes, you with the Twilight book you've read twice). There was a serious gothic romance trend happening at fashion week this season--like the smoldering vampire-inspired cat eye and soft pink lips at Venexiana--and the ultra-edgy makeup you need to recreate the look can be all yours. Just tell us your favorite vampire joke (in the comment section below) and cross your fingers while we announce the fangtastic winner.

WIN IT: Sephora goodies from backstage at Geren Ford

Ta-da! Now you can achieve the perfect smoky eye—in BROWN! Yes, brown. A little softer than black or gray, it's the perfect combo of colors to wear to work. "Less is more," said key makeup artist Sara Biria backstage at Geren Ford, just one of the reasons why she loved this palette.

What's even better is this kit can take you from the office to evening cocktails since the shadows can also be applied wet (to add drama). Why do you deserve a SEPHORA COLLECTION backstage goody bag? Do you need a make under? Tell us in the comments section, and you will have a chance to score this swag bag filled with: Brown Smoky Eyes Palette, Atomic Volume Mascara, Sweet Candy Lip Gloss, Harmony Trio Bronzer in Apricot.

WIN IT: Zirh guys' goodies from backstage at Yigal Azrouël

Who doesn't want their guy's skin to feel super soft and oh-so-smooth? It's easy to achieve with the Zirh skincare that was used backstage at Yigal AzrouĂ«l. Tell us (in the comments section) why your man deserves this triple play of products, and we'll pick one lucky winner.

Here's what he'll get:

WIN IT: Fekkai goodies from backstage at Rag & Bone

Tousled waves were all the rage backstage at Rag & Bone (plus neon nails and natural makeup, but that's another story). The key to snagging this romantic hair style: prepping with wave spray and drying hair in small twisted sections.

Tell us in the comments section why you deserve to win Fekkai's Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray and Full Blown Volume Lifting Hairspray. Are your locks so limp they won't hold a curl for more than a minute? Are you bored of the same ol' style? Do tell...

FASHION WEEK: NARS Cosmetics for 3.1 Phillip Lim

SHOW: 3.1 Phillip Lim

MAKEUP: Lisa Butler for NARS Cosmetics
MODEL: Julia for IMG
BEAUTY BOTTOM-LINE: Barely-there makeup featuring luminous skin

THE LOOK: Phillip Lim's collection this season was inspired by the late works of Picasso and the Cubism period—the clothing looked different from every angle. Lisa Butler applied the same idea to the makeup. While the look was clean, there was still tons of texture ranging from matte, sheer, shimmer and shine.

"The idea is not to be harsh. There is some shimmer so when the face moves around, the light really captures it. But there are no lines—no eye lines, no lip lines," said Lisa Butler.

To achieve this look, concealer was mixed with moisturizer and used around the nose, forehead and on cheeks. The Multiple in Luxor (available for Holiday '09) subtly highlighted cheekbones.

On eyes a golden moss color was used all over, filling in the crease with a sienna shade. D.Gorgeous shadow (available in Spring 2010) was applied with a smudge brush to the lower lash line for some intensity, and eyes were finished with one coat of lengthening mascara. A swipe of peachy nude lipstick was dabbed on, working from from the middle outward. To add a slight shimmer, the new Orgasm Illuminator (available in Spring 2010) was applied all over the face, concentrating on cheekbones.

Sephora's Halloween Look: VAMPIRE

TRICKS:

After applying eye makeup, use a sponge to smear it upward and outward, for a chilling effect.

Complement your fangs with a pair of spiky faux lashes and long black nails.

Flip your hair upside-down and spray it with lots of hairspray. This will keep locks looking disheveled all night.

Keep your complexion makeup fair and define with deep-toned blush for a goth-like allure.

Sephora's Halloween Look: MOUSE

TRICKS

Wear flared fake lashes to enhance the winged out shape of your eye makeup.

Create a really wide-eyed look, but applying generous amounts of white liner to the inner corner and rims of the eyes.

Keep hair extra slick by styling it while it’s still wet. Once it dries, spray hairspray on a toothbrush, and use it to tame any remaining fly aways.

Use cream shadow and a sponge to create a mouse nose; create clean whisker lines with a liquid liner and a ruler.

Sephora's Halloween Look: CLEOPATRA

TRICKS

When applying black liner, get as close to the lash line as possible—a small detail that adds major impact. (Hello, hypnotic eyes!)

For the best brow definition, use wax to define and shape, then go over it with powder for extra intensity.

Go for the extra long false lashes; they higher they extend, the more geometrical your eyes will look.

Instead of blush, use bronzer to sculpt your cheeks, concentrating the color only along the cheekbones.
