One of my resolutions for 2010 is abstaining from Twilight swooning. I swear. So this will be my last post on the subject (well, at least for a while), because it seems that I’m not alone in my love for all things vamp-related.
You gorgeous girls voted pale faces and deep lips as one of your top looks of the year. Purple and all of its hues got a big shout out from you as well. One of my favorite comments: “Purple reigned.” Golden shades also got a star as did eye-framing brows and lashes.
En fin, color takes the cake for the 2009 beauty trends.
Now, I’m wondering what do you think next year will look like? Swak. –Jenna Mahoney

2009: The Hits (And Your Picks)
When a Clutch Isn't Enough
I have the perfect clutch for tonight. It's dressy, elegant, black but small. After filling it with my phone, keys, credit card, and cash, there’s only room for a lone lip gloss, never mind the other touch-up essentials I’ll need throughout the night (and early morning?).
What beauty essentials have guaranteed space in your purse tonight?
Have a safe and wonderful start to 2010!
Champagne In Beauty Products? Bring On The Bubbly!
I came across this interesting article in the LA Times that was so perfect in light of the upcoming New Year festivities: Champagne infused beauty products! NICE! They interview a cosmetic chemist who says, "champagne is beneficial because of antioxidants in the grape seed extract it contains. These antioxidants are 20 to 50 times more powerful than vitamin C and vitamin E respectively." Who would've thought! It reminds me of Caudalie, one of our skincare brands that uses grape seed polyphenols. If you love your bubbly and your beauty products, this article is worth the read. Of course, standing under a shower of champagne at the stroke of midnight is much more fun :) - Joannie McIntyre

NYE: What's Your Look?
Sephora Twitter followers have already chimmed in. (Aside: If you aren't already on the tweet, hang out with us @sephora.) But I'm wondering aloud again. And I'd like to know: What is your NYE look? Personally this year it's me, the husband and the suegros for a dinner and champs toast before an early am flight back to NYC. So, I'm all about the simple. Well, who am I kidding? I'm always about the simple. In years past I've highlighted my hair with amazing vintage accents but kept the face all about the skin (surprise, I know) with a little bit of glimmer. My sissy who is the ultimate color master always concocts the most amazing eyes for the big bash. And so I'm wondering what will you do? A big deal or more of the pretty highlight? Swak --Jenna Mahoney
Beauty Resolutions 2010, What's Yours?

I can't believe the year is over, and like everyone else, the top resolution on my list is to start going to the gym on a regular basis. Ha, ha. Surprise, surprise. But as far a beauty resolutions go, I am vowing never to sleep with my makeup on, always wear eye cream (I am actually beginning to need it), and I plan to make a date with my Tanda device once a week. I swear I see benefits when I do those three things. Now putting that into action on a regular basis? That's a whole 'nother story :)
What about you out there, oh fellow beauty junkie, what's one beauty related resolution you'd like to stick to? Let's open it up to face and body. (Keep it clean, ya'll. Ha!)

What’s Your Favorite Look of the Year?
Just like MTV, top 40 radio stations and news magazines, beauty blogs around the globe are wrapping up the year with top look lists. I thought about compiling one here too. I’m a total sucker for lists and who didn’t fall in love with green nail polish and purple pouts these past months? But then I thought to myself, “Self, these amazing readers/commentors here at B&TB have actually tried the trends, so maybe you should ask them.” So, that is what I’m doing make a comment about your top beauty looks this year and I’ll formulate a Sephora Says Post with all your feedback. Did you die over asymmetrical hairstyles? Or was the messy mop your go-to daily deal? How about color? Blues, greens and purples were all over the news, but what were you wearing? Let me know, it will be another great way to keep the conversation going with all of you. Swak. –Jenna Mahoney
Stealing Beauty: The Lash Look
After a day of presents, paella and the King’s Christmas address on the television, I took my new loot to the couch for a long winter’s nap. Instead I ended up watching a Catalan-dubbed Bonnie and Clyde. The classic movie makes bank robbing, husband stealing and drunk driving seem oh-so-glamorous. Sure, the costumes are fabulous and fitted, but the main reason everything seems so gorgeous is due to Bonnie and Blanche’s amazing lashes. It seems as though in every scene the lovely ladies are batting deep, out-to-there, photogenic lashes. And when I say every scene, I mean it—at the beach, in bed and during breakfast. The look is so completely covetable, that I have decided to raid the home store for some falsies of my own. I’m going to start off simple with the heavy Make Up For Ever Strips. They seem easy to apply and they come in various lengths and shades. So I can successful steal the look and bring back around-the-clock sexy in the New Year. Once I’ve mastered the peel and place, I’ll need some more tutoring. It looks like the Sephora Brand Lash Placement Kit may be a necessity, but I’m not so sure. Do you have any tricks for getting va-va-voom lashes? –Jenna Mahoney

I could make a comment about picking the new(ish) girl last, but I’ll refrain (smile face). Instead I’m rounding up the game with my favorite picks of all their gush-worthy products.
Stella McCartney StellaNude I’m obsessed, quite unhealthily so with her O.G. fragrance, so I’ll admit that I was a little hesitant to try the latest addition to the Stella family. But then I remembered: There is absolutely nothing and I mean nothing (not even a shoe line with an aging alt-rocker) Stella can do wrong. This scent is light and everyday while still maintaining that distinct rose aroma that made me fall so hard for her fragrances in the first place.
Tarte Crown Jewels Lipgloss Gift Set Thank you again, Maureen Kelly and team. You constantly and successfully feed my gloss addiction with wearable colors, amazing textures and glossiness a-go-go. The fact that this set has seven sweet sticks means I can leave one in every bag and jacket.
Benefit Sugarbomb It may sound like an exaggeration, but it is totally true—I’m in love with everything the Ford sisters make. The quad of shimmered powders imparts the perfect highlight to cheeks without streaking or clumping. Plus, the formula is great for all temps.
Skyn Icelandic Relief Eye Pen My frequent flights aren’t doing any favors to that sensitive skin under my tired eyes. This petroleum-free formula alleviates those deep bags, depuffs the area and imparts a camouflaging illuminator so no one can tell that I’m tired.

Blog Tag: Cindy's 2009 Favorites

So thrilled that I was tapped to make a guest appearance on the blog. It’s been a while, and I can’t wait to share some of my 2009 obsessions. Here goes:
Bare Escentuals Buxom Lashliner and Lashliner Brush
Sitting next to Jess, the most lash-obsessed gal on the planet, it’s hard not to fixate on the state of my fringe as well. So when these two products landed on my desk, I was psyched to try them. As a big fan of makeup that doesn’t make you look ‘made-up’ per se, I knew right away we were gonna click. The deep-conditioning, paraben- and sulfate-free formula (perf for my sensitive eyes) glides on like a liquid liner and is extremely long-wearing. And the ultrafine tapered-point brush makes it easy to fill in the base of my lashes with rich black color in one quick stroke. The result: lashes that look longer and fuller, and eyes that are dramatically prettier yet not too ‘done.'
Benefit One Hot Minute
A key player in my efforts to debunk the "new mom=hot mess" myth, Benefit One Hot Minute is nothing short of a miracle, especially when time is of the essence (it might even distract from the spit-up you didn’t know you had on your shoulder!). Plus, it meets all my working-mom requirements. Subtle? Check. Mirror optional? Check. Fast and easy to apply? Check and check! Stashed in a sweet little tin (and stocked with its own fantail brush), this sexy rose-gold luminizing powder gives my sleep-deprived skin an ethereal I-just-happen-to-be-stunning glow—regardless of whether I clocked eight hours or eight minutes the night before.
Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo With Oat Extract – Non Aerosol Pump
As a girl cursed with annoyingly fine hair that errs on the side of oily, I’ve been on the dry shampoo bandwagon since … well, since before there even was one. While the de-greasing benefits are always appreciated, the insta-volume that dry shampoo brings to my lifeless roots is what I love most. What I could do without? The unfortunate, yet (for me) common accidental overdoses caused by the hard-to-control aerosol sprays or quick-spilling bottles. Then along came this product. One quick squeeze and poof! The convenient nonaerosol pump dispenser releases the perfect amount of product every time.

Beauty Spring Cleaning - What To Trash

With the coming New Year I've been going through all my beauty loot, trying to figure out what to toss, and what to keep. Ok, so I know mascara after 3 months pretty much belongs in the trash heap, but everything else is a total mystery to me. So I consulted my beauty bible, Sephora's "Ultimate Guide To Makeup, Skin, and Hair" book where I found my answers. Here, checkout this quick cheat sheet every beauty junkie needs written on a post-it in her makeup drawer:
Toss after...
One Year: Blush, Eau de Parfum, SPF
Six Months: Facial Moisturizer, Eye Makeup
Three Months: Mascara, Concealer, Liquid Foundation

Fat Over Fifty?
How much do you dislike the idea of aging?
Enough to gain some extra pounds?
Well packing it on may be a way to avoid looking all wrinkled. According to a study in the Archives of Dermatology Journal older women who weigh more are less likely to have wrinkles. The study, which examined aging patterns in twins, found that around the age of 55 the heavier women looked younger in their faces than their thinner counterparts. (It should be noted that until the above mentioned age, the fatter women looked older). Experts say that the effect may be due to the fact that the breakdown of collagen is more apparent in thinner women. Heavier faces can have a more full, plumper--and yes--younger look.
The findings of this study make total sense to me. Good fats help skin glow and look full. And I´m sort of drawn to the fact that I can eat with abandon actually look better--eventually.
So what about you, sweets? Let me know, are you willing to gain a few to look a little younger? --Jenna Mahoney

Hola, Sephora
As I may have mentioned, I´m on the road again. This time it is for my annual Christmas trip to España. Spain is very close to my heart. It is a place where I learned so much about life. And it happens to be the home country of my sweet husband. It is also the first place that I ever experienced a Sephora store.
I remeber when the shop opened in the city of Valencia. Rumors swirled around the city that the Sephora was a place of magic--the sales girls wore white gloves, the perfume section was the biggest in the city had ever seen and they had amazing beauty brands from all over the globe.
Who knew that Sephora would remain such a special place for me. My link to the brand has made my life so much more beautiful both literally and figuratively.
So when I saw this store in Madrid located at the Plaza del Sol, the geographical center of the country, I just had to snap a picture. (That´s me putting on some lipgloss in front of the facade.) It seems fitting that such a fantastic place would exist at the center of it all. Swak. --Jenna Mahoney
Christmas Morning Beauty?

Looking at old pictures from Christmases past made me wonder, who else slicks on a bit of gloss and adds a touch of blush for those early morning photos around the tree? My niece and nephew are always adorable posing for pictures with their sleepy eyes and tousled hair ... but Aunt Bo, not so much.

OK, I'm up! Here are my 2009 obsessions:
BENEFIT SUGARBOMB
I'm translucent (i.e., redheaded), so finding the right shade for my skintone can be a tall order. This blush won me over right away though. It has four different shades—peach, plum, rose and shimmering pink—that blend together to make the perfect sun-kissed pink.
DUWOP TWIGHLIGHT LIP VENOM
Confession: I never finished New Moon. I know. But the orginal Lip Venom has been my go-to for years, so when this crimson stain hit the scene, I couldn't resist. It's ridiculously cool (the "vampire blood" becomes tiny bubbles when you shake it) and gives lips a"bee stung" look. P.S., it smells like cinnamon.
DIOR DIORSHOW EXTASE MASCARA
This twisted mascara wand was inspired by John Galliano's "tiered" dresses, and the jet-black formula is made with black pearl pigments that make my lashes look much, much fuller. I'm hooked. I left for JFK yesterday, realized I forgot it, and walked back up three whole flights to get it. Interventions welcome.
NARS ORGASM ILLUMINATOR
Best. Product. Ever. The "lit from within" look doesn't go out of style, so basically, this pinky-peach shimmer is on my list for life. I apply it to my cheeks and forehead after foundation, or sometimes even wear it alone, and my skin glows for hours upon hours. Yes, please.
Tag CINDY, you're it! :) Happy holidays everyone!

Sephora Corporate Holiday Tour
Ever wanted a sneak-peak into Sephora headquarters? Staffer Joyce sought out the San Francisco office's best and brightest holiday decorations, just for Beauty & The Blog readers.
While it may be the cool thing to loathe your job, just like it was cool to dislike school when you were in the 8th grade, I’m a self-proclaimed dork and actually like going to work. I work at Sephora USA Corporate Headquarters here in lovely San Francisco, and seeing as "it’s the most wonderful time of the year," I wandered the halls of Sephora’s offices to check out my co-workers cubicles to see whether they would pass St. Nick’s holiday spirit test. My results may surprise you.
My first stop: Finance Department. Sephopra's Finance Department is comprised of a proud, creative stock. There are no reserved accountants named Eugene armed with pocket protectors here, no sirree bob. This cool team takes holiday cubicle decorating very seriously. As you walk through the main doors of their department, BOOM! – a Winter Wonderland stops you in your tracks. Finance recreated a miniature lighted Christmas village complete with snow-capped hills, a horse-drawn sleigh, and a VIA-decked Christmas tree. (VIA's/Values in Action are round, little mirrored awards that are given to Sephora employees.) As you approach Chrys Lear’s cubicle, you come upon an almost life-size snowman and Christmas tree extravaganza.
My next stop: Cyberstalking the IT department. Mostly populated by the male species, the IT department made quite the effort in displaying Christmas computer cheer. I ambushed Network Engineer, David J’s cubicle and came upon an "Awwwwwww"-inducing holiday shrine dedicated to his family and Sephora. Not only did David J (aka DJ) put up a mini twinkle-lit Christmas tree in his pristine and tidy cubicle, but underneath it, he also placed Sephora memorabilia--lie his logo mug, mini notebook, and pencil sharpener--as if they were presents! But what melted my heart the most was a mouse pad featuring personal photographs of his adorable young sons with Santa Claus. I think witnessing that display of his love for his boys ignited my biological clock--HA!
Sephora employees Danl Plyler, Christine Duran, Tracey Gin, and Nicole Vanegas knew they couldn’t go wrong with decorated miniature Christmas trees. Whether it was a fake purple tree from Target decorated with plastic lobsters or a tree made out of ornaments entirely—these gals knew how to make bring stunning decoration to the office.
My peeps in the Property Development department blew me away with their impressive creativity, which left me inspired. “No wonder why these innovative geniuses work for Sephora,” I said to myself. Their department is flocked with Christmas trees that are adorned with doohickeys and knickknacks found in Gayle Sherman’s house. The look is anything but tacky--it's cozy and polished.
In some places, Sephora has come to emulate almost a disco club this time of year. Step in the Executive office, Rosa Arguello Ortega’s desk, or the main Sephora lobby, and you'll see giant, colorful, ornamental balls hanging from the ceiling and cubes. It makes you feel more animated, overwhelmingly giddy even, just at the sheer sight of them in a corporate office setting.
And then there’s me and my reception area, what I like to call the “nucleus” of Sephora’s HQ; a chaotic-looking, yet organized desk decked out with holiday ornaments, garlands, a cutout of a Sephora catalog glamour gal with Santa’s hat propped on her head, candy canes, holiday treats, and a “JOY to the WORLD” sign. I definitely marked my territory. My extra special touch: I made two CDs of my favorite Christmas carols and have been continuously playing them, which has hopefully put co-workers passing by my desk in a jolly festive mood.
Yes, the merchant team showers me with vibrant lipsticks, soothing hair products, succulent lotions, and intoxicating fragrances, but what makes Sephora a really cool place to work are my co-workers—no joke! Occasionally naughty, but more often than not, incredibly nice (not to forget hilarious), Sephoraens definitely make Santa proud.
Reporting live with lots of holiday spirit: Joyce Dulanas.
Banning Beauty

Two weeks ago I posted about the possible tan tax addendum to the health care bill. I talked about my vote to ban the entire practice and got some fun comments in return. Aleksis mentioned kicking butts may be the first to go. And some one else told me to read the constitution, in reference, I think, to the Bill of Rights and possibly even the clause in the Declaration of Independence about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that one should be able to do what one wants. And that’s for many reasons why we probably live in America. (Another reason is the fact that the country is packed with Sephora stores. Smile face.)
But, my dear friends and readers, it looks like I wasn’t that far off base with my call to ban the tan, because British Public Health Minister Gillian Merron announced a desire to ixnay on the fake and bake for those under 18 in England. Now, I know, I know the founding fathers and all that escaped the prosecution of the Crown when they came here, but I can’t help feel a little vindicated in my desire to get rid of the unhealthy—and in my opinion—unattractive habit. I’m especially anti tanning beds after reading that a recent study, which found that 250,000 cases of skin cancer in Brits under the age of 18 were attributed to these ultra-ray beds, prompted Ms. Merron’s decision. So I guess the next question is: Will such a measue work? I was a teenager once and if there was a big NO scrawled on something by the establishment, I was certainly a little more curious to try it. --Jenna Mahoney
Do You Have a Signature Scent?
A few weeks back, a dear friend and I were chatting beauty on my couch. I gave her a sampling of some shadows and a liquid foundation that was a tinge too light for me. But when I offered her a new fragrance, she gave me the “thanks, but no thanks” look. And informed me that she’s got a signature scent. Her daily-go-to happens to be Burberry Brit, a light musky mix with a peony top note. I’ll admit that I have it in my arsenal (I tend to reach for it during transitional seasons) and winter tends to welcome LAVANILLA Pure Vanilla, a grown-up version of the roller ball hippie-feeling scent I wore throughout college.I also often sing the praises of Tocca Stella Solid, a yummy, yet sophisticated, orange that it du riguer in my carry-on, since I’m always toting the solid. But if someone were to ask me if I have a signature scent I’d say: You bet’cha. It is Stella McCartney Stella and it’s sweet smelling sister, Stella Sheer in summer. And I stash the lotion and the roller ball at my desk. I love the heady rose and the intoxicating way it lingers on my skin. And I tend to overdo it so much that I’ve been called out on more than one occasion. Am I alone in my monogamy? Or do you girls love a single scent too? Or are you a butterfly that likes to flit to different fragrances? --Jenna Mahoney

Woo-hoo, I'm up next! Wow, 2009 is almost over. There have been some great beauty launches this year, and not-so-new products I've tried for the first time this year too, so it's gonna be tough narrowing it down to just a few. Here goes:
Tanda Regenerate Anti-Aging Starter KitI actually bought this set at the end of 2008, but I really didn't start using it regularly till this year. It feels odd to say this, but light therapy really does make a difference. And I especially love that it's a topical, but in a different way, because it's a light opposed to a cream. Basically, the red light is for antiaging and it gives me a brightening effect. The blue is for breakouts which I use a week out of the month. If I stop using it, I notice my skin starts to look dull and uneven. It's almost like having your own personal sun therapy right in your own bathroom! I see results in just 3 days a week.
Shiseido Eudermine Revitalizing EssenceHaving fought oily skin my whole life up until recently, I still can't stand seeing the slightest oily sheen on my face, I don't care how dry my face gets. In the morning, I usually skip a heavy moisturizer so it doesn't double-grease me when I use my liquid foundation on top, so I use this incredible hydrating water instead. It's like, over a 100 years old, and one of Shiseido's oldest products. It's a moisturizing water that feels almost like a toner, and it dries clean, no slickness whatsoever. You just splash it on with your hands (kinda like a guys aftershave) and your skin just feels hydrated, the pores are tight, and ready for foundation.
I've always been a fan of Hourglass foundation, powders, and their killer glosses. This year, I ventured out into their eye makeup category and fell in love with their one and only mascara. I have super-short lashes. I don't know if it's the length of the wand or the skinny, Christmas tree shape of the brush, but it really helps define even my shortest lashes on the bottom. It even holds up against smudging. Amazing. I have a mini in my purse, and a full-size in my bathroom drawer at all times.

A Retouchy Subject
According to an article in today's WWD, two organizations, one in the U.K. and one in France, are trying to ban airbrushed photos in European ads--or at least make sure they are explicitly labeled as digitally altered. Why? Studies are showing that airbrushed images of superskinny models are are causing unhealthy behavior in adolescent audiences. Do you think the efforts are well justified or just in vain?
Well, whatever your opinion or ultimate outcome may be, us lucky ones in the states can take comfort in knowing our TEMPTU AIRbrush Makeup Systems will do the trick, without breaking the law.

An Unusual Beauty Request: Beauty Gift Ideas For My Aunt With Cancer?
It's pretty rare that I get stumped when someone asks me to make a recommendation for a specific beauty problem, until my aunt asked me for advice on what beauty products to get when your looks have been trashed by Chemotherapy treatments. I honestly did not know what to say. I had to think hard about it, but I was able to buy a few things that might help her including Cover FX Foundation, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, and PTR's Brows To Die For. I had been so focused on her fighting the disease, I forgot there was a whole 'nother issue to deal with, and that's helping her get back together again after the fight is won. Anyway, I found a really interesting article from the Mail Tribune in South Oregon about this exact topic, and I was thrilled. They interview a makeup artist and volunteer for Look Good Feel Better, an organization that helps cancer patients get gorgeous after treatments. Some of the tips included dotting eyeshadow along the lash line using a cotton swab to help mimic a diminished lash line, and using cream versions of eye shadow or concealer for the most natural look. If you know someone with cancer that needs a beauty boost, it's worth checking out. - Joannie McIntyre
