My New Skin Secret

I know I may sound a bit like my namesake on 30 Rock right now, but it’s true: In the past five days just as many people have told me that my skin looks amazing. Tone has been even, I’ve got no white bumps and there’s even a bit of a glow. One friend emailed me after tea at the Ritz to ask me how I kept so hydrated during this horrid dry season. And the reason I’ve been able to keep my skin in check is thanks to my trusty arsenal of products as well as a deep, dark secret that may actually ick you out. See, I’ve been skimping on the washing. OK not like not washing my face skimping—more like I’ve been making an extra effort not to overcleanse. That’s because in the search for squeaky, clean skin I’ve been known to pile on the sal. acids and hydroxys which oftentimes can translate into dry patches and flakes. And that is a serious no-no. The results that I’ve been enjoying lately goes to show that you can have too much of a good thing. It’s all about balance and as a Libra I should acknowledge that a little more often. Now, if we could just do something about those pastey legs of mine….No seriously, do you have any skin secrets that may surprise us? Swak –Jenna Mahoney

I've recently become a Vitamin E convert for around my eyes. Before bed I take a drop or two, heat it just for a moment or two with my blow dryer set to warm and lightly dab around my undereye area. It has made a remarkable difference in the appearance of fine lines.

for the last sentence... HYDRATE HYDRATE HYDRATE. But try to avoid mineral oil if you can. Mineral oil, like sugar, is a filler that makes things FEEL smooth, but really sits on top of the skin, clogging pores, and really preventing any hydration. And like sugar... it's usually unnecessary and harmful.

i live in a hot, humid climate...so i can't relate. my "secret" to fresh skin is oil blotting papers, i use several per day (and i'm not young, either- so it's not excess oil...just sticky salt air and heat).

that said, overwashing can cause excess oiliness, i've heard. as you say, it's all about balance- moisture w/ the right level of cleanliness.

yes my secret is I don't tone in the winter..Toner usually dries my face out too much...So I just wash with a CREAM cleanser then apply sunscreen moisterizer!

I have oily skin soo actually I do the opposite of my summer regimen. I'm trying to keep the moisture vs. keep my face dry.

yup. Vit E around the eyes. I poke a hole in the liquid vitamin and massage a few drops around the eye area. It seems to really help my lashes as well.

Some people keep snacks at their desk. I keep Josie Maran's Argan Oil within reach so I can pat a few drops on my face mid-afternoon to bring back that dewy glow.

@peaches: toner is meant to be hydrating, not dry your face out. it also preps your face to better absorb your moisturizer. are you using something that is more astringent?

My calves always get super dry in the winter. I exfoliate every 7 - 10 days in the winter. Less often in summer. I have to be careful because some exfoliants make me break out if they're too oily.
