On the day-after-Earth-Day, we checked in with Beauty Advisors Olivia and Theresa at the Call Center. Just like any other day, Olivia biked to work. Theresa spent the morning saving energy by shampooing and rinsing in cool water, which btw is a great frizz-fighting and cuticle sealing tip.
We also found this very relevant question in our Twitter account.
Q: Do you have any products that are vegan? - @TarRaRaBoomDeAy
A: First off, did you know that Oreos are vegan? There's not one iota of animal product or animal-derived ingredients in those delectable treats.
As for makeup, natural and organic brands are a great place to start but some of their products may still include ingredients like beeswax. It gets even trickier. Even within the same brand of products, certain shades may contain animal products. To prevent confusion, some companies like Caudalie have marked their products very clearly "no animal ingredients."
To help you sort through, we’ve provided a list of vegan products divided by categories. Specific shades to buy and skip are mentioned whenever applicable. Enjoy! And remember if you have a beauty question for us, post it here in the comments, via Twitter or on Facebook.- Theresa and Olivia

Also a lot of Indie Mineral mu companies are vegan or mostly vegan. It's nice to have so many options.
Great post!
So are the vegan products also natural? I know most of Tarte products are, and they have the Sephora's natural seal or stamp. I didn't know UD was some vegan! Thanks!
Wow, that's a lot of stuff!
I knew most of UD was vegan; on their website they mark all vegan products very clearly; they also are cruelty-free!
What I'm surprised to see is not a single mention of Too-faced. Their teddy bear hair brushes are also completely animal-free.
Also missing:
Bare Escentuals mineral foundation powders (though their brushes contain goat hair, so not vegan there and a rep for the company claimed their lip/eye makeup was all vegan as well, which is not 100% true because Carmine/cochineal, which are ground up bugshells, are listed in some lip and buxom ingredients)
Philosophy the Supernatural foundation is vegan, and their other products are cruelty free, though I'm not 100% sure on the complete veganness.
Stila tinted moisturizers are vegan and cruelty-free, except their Sheer Color Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer, which contains beeswax and silk (though the beeswax is a shame because the silk is sustainably harvested without harming silkworms).
Clinique has 2 vegan mascaras:
clinique lash doubling mascara
clinique high lengths mascara
For fragrances...um...Stella McCartney??
I really wish that Sephora would have a stamp (like UD!) of cruelty-free and vegan on each of the product pages the same way they have their "natural seal." They'd draw a much larger vegan crowd! Right now, many vegans are sticking to ordering directly from purely vegan companies and/or department store counters that clearly label products as such. Not for nothing, MAC does this; and I would say that MAC is one of Sephora's biggest competitors, particularly for MUA's.
ALSO! Warning to any vegans reading this!!! Illamasqua is NOT 100% vegan! Just one check to their lipstick shows that it not only contains beeswax, but some shades may contain carmine:
All shades contain:
Octyldodecanol, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Oleyl Alcohol, Caprylic/ Capric Triglyceride, Candelilla Cera (Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax), Cera Carnauba (Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax), Cera Alba (Beeswax), Oxidized Polyethylene, Cera Microcristallina (Microcrystalline Wax), Cetyl Alcohol, Polyethylene, Tocopherol, Parfum (Fragrance) And May Contain: [+/- Titanium Dioxide Ci 77891, Iron Oxides Ci 77491, Ci 77492, Ci 77499, Red 7 Ci 15850, Red 40 Lake Ci 16035, Blue 1 Lake Ci 42090, Red 21 Lake Ci 45380, Carmine Ci 75470, Red 36 Ci 12085, Manganese Violet Ci 77742, Copper/Bronze Powder Ci 77400, Yellow 5 Lake Ci 19140, Yellow 6 Lake Ci 15985, Calcium Aluminum Borosilicate, Silica, Tin Oxide, Mica] (Eu Exclusive Shades May Contain: Ci 77007, Ci 77000). May contain Carmine as a colour additive.
Their face makeup and cheek color also may contain carmine! I feel like I need to check the ingredients of every item on this list, since the claims made here are untrue!
How disappointing that this list, which could have been so helpful, isn't factually accurate.
Thanks LuzDeJunio for listing the Illamasqua call out. I will find out from the brand if there are particular products that are vegan. In the meantime, I've taken it off this list. Thanks again for calling that out! Also, appreciate your Stella addition.
Great post!
Also, in the haircare category all Jonathan Product products except Dirt are vegan.
Thank you sooooo much for posting this! It would be great if Sephora could use the purple pawprint symbol online that Urban Decay uses for their vegan products.
I am not so aware about Vegan Make Up Products, but its nice to know that these are availabe in the market, next I will check the products if it is a vegan or not :) Thank you for sharing this!
a lot from UD xD but they make it very clear on their site which items are vegan so yeah gotta love them
Thank you for the response Cheryl!
I did some more research on the products listed here (other than the Urban Decay, which dominated the list, and is already targeted to vegans), and posted the results on my blog, to keep from continuing to hijack this entry. That post can be found here.
I have also been researching other products offered at Sephora, and will be posting other vegan items in my blog as I hear back from each manufacturer.
In reference to Urban Decay Ink for Eyes, your website says that all shades may contain carmine. How can they claim that as vegan?
Actually, that goes for almost all Urban Decay eye products listed here.
so excited for this!!!!
Thank you for making vegan products! I hope that one day UD will be all vegan :)
What great info - thanks!!
Just a note- some of the Tarte products are not vegan, for example I know their lash hugger mascara contains shellac.
I doubled checked with Clinique regarding vegan-friendly products and they did not name any of their products, only this message:
"Very few animal derived raw materials are found in Clinique products. Animal ingredients are used only when their efficacy cannot be duplicated by any other source of ingredients. When an ingredient can be obtained from either animals or plants,we use the plant derived material."
Korres and Origins has a lot of vegan-friendly items. Origins will list on their make-up packaging if it is animal ingredient free.
My Favorite Vegan make up line is Johnny Concert(www.johnny-concert.com). They are an indie rocker/emo themed brand and they don't use any chemicals in their makeup either. I use it for my sensitive/acne prone skin and its awesome I've noticed a big difference :)
If anyone is interested I have a blog about vegan products, feel free to check it out! prettylittlevegan.blogspot.com
