Beauty in the News: Spending Stats

We interrupt these holiday wish lists with an interesting update on shopping habits. For years now, experts have talked about the Lipstick Index, an economic indicator that is inversely related to the market. The theory goes that if the economy is headed downtown, then lipstick sales tend to surge. Why? Well, it’s the little indulgences that we can make space for in our household budget. In 2008, that jump was as high as 40%, according to a New York Times report I quoted in November of that year. Well, these days, despite the bad news from Ireland and the national pay freeze here in the US, beauty is still experiencing an increase. But it seems that lipstick is getting a run for its money. In fact, experts are now looking at nail polish as the latest economic indicator. According to today’s New York Post the uptick in polish sales is as high as 60%. Folks quoted in the piece say it may be due to the fact that women are willing to experiment with more color. And I for one can agree—in the past few weeks, I’ve painted my toes and fingers colors I’d never imagined before. I’ve gone griege, navy and taupe when before I was all about the neutral pinks. What about you? Are you finding color more tempting? –Jenna Mahoney

This stuff is totally cyclical. In the 80s reds/pinks were the norm and other colors the "wild" crowd, in the 90s certain colors all over the place were in vogue, then in the beginning of the aughts it was in to have nicely groomed but unpainted nails, and then more "standard" reds/pinks, and now we're coming back around to colors. (At least that's my rough recollection since I was but a child during some of those decades!)

Right now I'm comfortable with greige and full-on cement grey (early adopter of both), oranges and certain purples, but I'm still not into the greens or blues on fingers. (Toes are fine.) I get the feeling this will all swing back to subtle glitter-free shades and then it'll start all over again. Might as well hang on to your polish bottles until things truly expire, since all these trends repeat themselves eventually!

I prefer a good beige on my nails; but lately I've been using this shade of coral red, and considering how many compliments I received about this nail polish, I may as well stick to bright colors for a while :).

I'm spending less, but since I could easily provide the makeup for a Fashion cares out of my stash, this isn't hardship.
I've always painted my toenails totally according to my mood: sparkly fuchsia, chartreuse, brown, black, purple, whatever! Toes are for fun. Fingernails get painted less often because I have soft nails and the best manicure lasts *maybe* two days, no matter what.

I get bored, so I try out different colors. Especially with the time of year, I don't have to worry about wearing sandals and my toes being some wild color that will distract everybody. So I can color them whatever I want and experiment.

I'm a Beauticontrol girl myself ! Welcome! First and foremost become as familiar with beautinet.com as possible. There are online videos of how to do a spa, step by step, that's a different style and technique than the one shown on the DVD you received. Also, if you go to "forms" anything and everything you could possibly want to use for sales is located out there. Aside from that, just work on networking and booking a few SpaEscapes or office spas.

I'm with BestofBeehive, I wear crazy pedicure colors this time of year because no one sees them. Right now I have a sparkly dark blue. I would probably not wear that color in the summer.
