Memorial Day Weekend Must-Packs

Hey all you beautiful ladies, I’m literally on my way out the door to visit my parents at the beach. And we are ready to kick off the official start to summah! I’ve got my nails painted a patriotic red, rolled up a few hoodies for BBQs and nights on the bay and most importantly I’ve packed the sun protection. (And it’s worth repeating: So should you!) Here are my top picks for this holiday weekend away:
Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream for Face SPF 55 ($19.50) I’ll be spending all day Saturday at a regatta, which means lots of hours on the water and in the beating sun. Packed with super antioxident powers and full-spectrum protection, this water-proof formula promises to shield me from harmful rays. And the travel size is easy to tote in my canvas tote (ha!).
Clarins Sunscreen High Protection SPF 30 ($32) Lately, I’ve been slathering on Clarins body moisturizers post-shower. This plant-based is creamy, emollient and, of course, ultra protecting.
Smashbox Limitless Long Wear Lip Gloss ($21) OK, I’m just not going to repeat my adoration of all things glossy… The Boundless shade is the perfect blend of just bitten and beachy innocence. The fact that it has SPF 15 makes it my go-to for my weekend of sand, sun and sea. --Jenna Mahoney

Application is super easy: Clean the area of skin you want to adorn, lay the tattoo face down on the skin, and apply pressure for a couple of minutes—and voilà! Instant Kat Von D appeal. There couldn’t have been a more beautiful union.

Poll: Is Going Bare a Dare?

In the past few weeks it seems like every media outlet is talking about women going make-up free. Our friends at Stylelist made mention of it recently. And if I I recall correctly there was a buzz about the price of beauty when a certain former real housewife appeared on the cover of Marie Claire a few months ago sans photoshopping. And there was an hour of morning talk dedicated to the fact that the hosts were bare-faced (and for some reason puffy?). Heck, even PerezHilton in all of his beauty-knowing glory has been posting more shots of posted a few celebs au natural in the face than usual. So what's causing this blip in the zeitgeist? I'm not so sure. But I've got a confession to tell: I don't always wear makeup to the office. Yes, I slick on the gloss (can never be too long without my trusty lips shine) and highlight over any dark spots, but blush sticks and lengthening mascara sometimes get the heave-ho in the AM. Now, meetings, events and interviews always get the full-on face treatment. Although those days I just want to watch the game, I'm just one of the boys. Your turn to share: Do you think going make-up free is a dare or a do? --Jenna Mahoney

Big Beauty Sister: Who's Yours?

Growing up I never had a big beauty sister, you know, the kind of girl who shows you how to put on makeup and curl your hair. I had big party sisters (thanks for the lessons on talking to boys and dipping at movies) and big performance sisters (watch Glee? That was pretty much my high school life). I met my big beauty sister when I started working at a national magazine. Sure, I had experiments with beauty: There was a liquid eyeliner phase; I had a shaved/RIT dye hair moment or three; And who can ever forget the defined lip a-la Spice in the early 90s. Skincare too was a bit of a trail and error for me. I removed greasepaint and eyeliner with cold cream, used apricot mask after a two-week run of slathering my skin with Karo syrup (see the aforementioned Glee moment) and scrubbed with super strong acne removal pads when I had even the tingle of a pimple. I had one painful training session in brow grooming in college, but no one in my life really defined the art and allure of makeup to me. Until I met my big beauty sister. I was deep into my 20s and working at a national magazine. And she was the epitome of high-maintenance glam wearing shy-high heels, lacquered lips and lashes out-to-there on all occasions, even to watch sports. She taught me that makeup is serious business, but that it is also fun, flirty and a way to enhance your natural positives. My big beauty sister defined skincare ingredients, showed me how to talk to derms, artists and hair dressers. And she gave me the gift of loving beauty. These days, I'm lucky enough to share it all with you. And I realize that good things come to those who wait, I just wished I had asked for a more complete smokey eye demo when I had the chance. Who is your BBS? And what was the most important thing she told you? Swak –Jenna Mahoney

New: Kardashian Glamour Tan

I’ll admit it: I’m totally on the Kim Khardashian beauty train. Her skin is flawless; her eyes are always painted to the nines. And am I the only one who thinks he Superbowl nails were just totally super!? Ok I realize I sound a little Jennifer8 here, but I really do think she’s got it going on. So, I was pretty stoked to mimic her Miami glow with the new Kardashian Glamour Tan Self-Tanning Gel ($34). It’s packed with moisturizing vitamin D and completely free of ickies like parabens, phthalates and sulfates. The totally odorless formula is also streak-less. Although the immediate results may be a bit on the paler side, the glow is so natural and the build-ability is such a cinch that results are as if I’ve been dishing with the sisters on the sunny shores of Malibu. And that makes it all worth it. Swak –Jenna Mahoney

Beauty Calls: Help! I'm Fixated on My Dark Circles

We love this concealer from MAKE UP FOR EVER for its super precise silicone applicator.
Q: How do I camouflage under eye circles? - Aunt Louise
Yes, that's a genuine question from my aunt. She has been on a life-long quest to find an answer. Everytime I see her, it doesn’t matter whether it’s at my engagement dinner or we’re in a hospital waiting room, she'll point under her eyes and ask me what to do.

I was imploring Theresa and Olivia at Sephora's Call Center to end this topic of conversation once and for all. It turns out it's a popular question they get all the time.

A: We love being asked this question because the solution is so simple and clever. It’s all in the application in combination with finding the right shade. First, the technique: Lean forward slightly and tilt your chin down. This will reveal the true area of your dark circles. Apply concealer just to the area that looks dark and slightly puffy if that’s also a concern. By applying concealer this way rather than the full area under your eye, you are truly tricking the eye into not seeing your dark circles. For the most flawless results, we advice using a flat concealer brush, which is more precise and hygienic than your finger.

As for the right shade, follow these guidelines to camouflage dark circles. Most of us already know our skin tone: you're either fair, medium, olive, tan, or deep. The hard part, however, is determining your undertone. If your undereye circles look purple or blue, then go with a concealer with pink in it. If your undereye circles look green, then go with a concealer with peach. And, if you can't tell or if your circles look bluish green, try a beige first, which has equal parts pink and peach. Happy concealing!

Love,
Theresa and Olivia

Skincare Superfood: Royal Jelly in Rexaline

In the bee kingdom, royal jelly is fed to the queen bee and her possible successor, the larva that will one day become queen. With a tasty diet of nectar, pollen, and flower parts secreted by worker bees, they live 40 times longer than the average drone. When health food fanatics discovered this insect fountain of youth, they bottled royal jelly into a supplement to treat everything from erectile dysfunction to recharging metabolism.

In the beauty world, we've found that royal jelly has awesome age-reversing effects for your skin. The researchers at cult skincare line Rexaline created a patented complex that firms, hydrates, and revives skin cells and guess what, royal jelly is one of the active anti-aging ingredients. Along with hyaluronic acid, which is naturally present in younger skin (and the same stuff in your lunch-time injections), this complex balances skin giving it the critical water concentration for supple and younger-looking skin - no stinging necessary.

High Art: The Lipstick Diaries

Somtimes it's nice to share news about beauty giving back. Right now, there’s a red-hot photo show on display in New York City right now. The Lipstick Portraits aims to “take back beauty” in the name of those that have been horrifyingly trafficked into the sex trade. Sixty-five photos of different women some super famous, some victims of sexual servitude illustrate them all wearing (or applying) red lipstick. The significance is one of empowerment, since many young prostitutes in Cambodia are forced to wear the iconic lacquer on their lips. All of the show’s proceeds go to Somaly Mam Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to abolish the trafficking of women and girls for sex work. The exhibit is on display at 401 Projects in Chelsea until the end of the month. –Jenna Mahoney

Editors’ Picks: Waterproofing for Summer

Nobody wants to be that girl with the black marks running down her face at a pool party—or anywhere, for that matter. Summer means swimming pools, beaches, and unfortunately, sweating in the sun. Here are our picks for the best waterproof essentials to complete summer look:

Lashes:
Lancôme Hypnose Drama Waterproof has a formula that lasts up to 24-hours. This new Sephora-exclusive will not flake, clump, or dissolve in water. Get full-body fringe and dramatic volume instantly, and keep it even after hours of poolside fun.

Eyes & Lips:
MAKE UP FOR EVER Aqua Eyes is a two-in-one eyeshadow-and-liner pencil—plus, you can also use it for your lips! As revealed in a previous post about the lovely brand, the lip and eye pencils are actually the same formula, just available in different colors. These heavy-duty pencils resist water and fading, making this a must for summer-proof makeup.

Face:
Too Faced Aqua Bunny not only survives water, but it also withstands heat, humidity, and various climate changes. Keep your bronze skin tone all day long, rain or shine. Bonus: the cream-to-powder formula smells like delicious Piña Colada—perfect for summer.

Sephora Shoppers Share Their Expert Hair Advice

We always suspected this, and now it’s confirmed. B&TB readers are beauty geniuses. A few weeks ago during our Mother's Day giveaways, we asked your advice on hairy situations and you delivered!

Here are expert tips written by you on how to love your hair. Thank you for helping us banish bad hair days. You lovelies rock!

  • I wash my hair with clarifying shampoo at least once a week to get rid of all the gunk and build-up. -Vivian

  • When in the sun, use some type of protectant whether it's a hat, or an SPF on your hair. It's just as prone to sun damage as your skin. If you bleach or color your hair, this is ESSENTIAL! Your color will fade much more quickly if you don't protect it. Why spend all that money if you won't protect it? - Deb
  • Always, always, always use a heat protecting spray before styling hair with heat. It protects hair, and also gives it shine! - Allison
  • Summer tip: Keep your shampoo and conditioner in the refrigerator. The coolness of the products when washing your hair on a hot day feels amazing! - Fior
  • My daughter inherited my super curly hair and so I feel that I should share my tips. I wish my mother had done that for me as I had such a hard time figuring out my hair for years. After washing,we use a leave-in conditioner. We let it air dry to fight frizz and for soft body. When we want more curl definition, we use a small amount of gel. We love Queen of Curls, OUIDAD's Climate Control Heat and Humidity Gel which defines the spirals, but keeps the softness. It also adds shine and deepens color to the curls. - Sanoe
  • Olive oil makes a great deep conditioner. Apply a small palmful to dry hair, let it sit, and rinse out twice. Vinegar also makes an amazing shine-enhancing rinse post-shampoo/conditioner!
 -Madeleine

  • The best and easiest way to ultra-healthy hair? Don’t wash it every day. Wash it twice a week, three times a week if it’s extra oily. Your natural oils are the best thing for your hair and it will become shiny, strong and healthy.
If your hair gets oily in two days, use hair-powder to soak it up. Not only does this add amazing body and manageability, but it smells amazing! Try it for a month or two. You will not be sorry! - Jennifer
  • I make my own salt spray for wavy hair: two parts saltwater, one part vinegar and one part regular water. The salt gives hair a beachy texture and the vinegar adds shine. -Lexie
  • My hair is very frizzy and extremely hard to control. I use an apple cider vinegar rinse (1 tbsp vinegar to 1 cup water) every other day and condition with Ojon Ultra Hydrating in between. - Birdie
  • To fight frizz, I always use a conditioner with protein to protect it from heat damage. And, I apply an anti-frizz serum to the ends of my hair before styling. -Rhonda
  • I blow dry my hair in a shower cap to prevent frizz.
- Jessica
  • If you get the occasional flyaway, your answer is probably already in your purse. Lip balm, lotion, or even a tiny dab of sheer lip gloss can help. The trick is to use very little product and avoid smashing hair together. Just get the rebellious hairs a little heavy and sticky and delicately push them down.
- Sara
  • Never brush curly hair. To detangle while preventing breakage, use a wide-tooth comb in the shower while strands are coated with conditioner.
- Elizabeth
  •
You can curl your hair without using heat by wrapping wet hair in strips of paper and tying them in bows. The next morning, you'll have nice curls! – Elisa

Scared Straight

It looks like some scientists have found a new way to get people out of the tanning beds, since the “Big C” isn’t scary enough. A group of researchers at the East Tennessee State University found 400 students who fake-n-bake and handed half of them pamphlets on the accelerating aging effects of tanning. The booklet illustrated the decline in appearance and skin texture that extensive sun exposure (and fake rays) can cause. Health tips, nutrition advice and even exercise info along on getting glowing were also included in the handout, as was fashion how-tos and self tanner application tips. A few months later, the students were questioned about their tanning habits. And guess what? Those who received the pamphlets were significantly less likely to bake than their counterparts. Guess there is something as serious as cancer... –Jenna Mahoney

The Skinny on Philosophy's The Big Skinny

It bronzes. It firms. It smoothes. Need we say more?

Philosophy's The Big Skinny Self-Tanning Firming Cream is proving to be one of summer's early sleeper hits. This ultra-rich body cream is formulated with a progressive, self-tanning technology that delivers gradual, natural-looking color and is infused with skin-firming agents designed to smooth and tone the skin.

And (This is a major bonus in my book...) it's infused with a tropical hint of cocoa--not your average self-tanner aroma. Sephora.com reviewer CG23 gave it 5 stars and says, "I loved the smell and color of this product! It is so soft and the smell NEVER changes AT ALL!!! The firming quality on my upper arms stays as long as I am using the product. The color is very realistic."

Who's jumping on the Big Skinny Bandwagon? I'll see you there.

tokidoki spotting

tokidoki has not only taken over Sephora.com and our Facebook page--the criminally cute characters also followed me on my vacation to Hawaii last week. Check out my mischievous frozen yogurt cup from Yogurtland in Waikiki.

Tried & Tested: A Weekend of Tan Towels

Last weekend, I gave myself a challenge: get tan. Of course, because I'm an SPF cheerleader (and a resident of not-so-sunny San Francisco), doing it the dangerous, old fashioned way was out of the question. Enter: Tan Towels. Long ago, I was obsessed with these handy towelettes, so you can image how happy I was when they came pack with a brand new look. I was so excited, in fact, that I went for the Tan Towel Hat Trick--3 applications in 3 days.

First, I started with the The Exfoliating Towelette 3 in 1 Exfoliator, Buffer, Moisturizer, then I applied the Plus Self-Tan Towelette For Face & Body—Medium to Dark Skin Tones all over by body. Tip: I use the half-body size, so it's easier to ration. One for my arms, torso, and back; one for my legs.

Behold, the bronzed, even results. Tan Towel's #1 Fan, right here.

Before: Thumbs down.

After: Awesome glow.

New: Illamasqua Body Electrics

These Sephora-exclusive shades are suitable for your body and face. Step up your routine by taking your makeup to a whole new level—and to a whole new part of your body.

Prom Time: Josie Maran's Prom Beauty Memories

Josie Maran knows natural beauty. The earthy supermodel grew up in a Bohemian household, the roots that inspired her organic beauty line. So it's no surprise that she kept things naturally gorgeous on her prom night, too. Here, she recalls her pre-prom beauty routine.

"I remember prom night being so much fun! I wore this little black dress which was so easy to dance in and I had an amazing time taking pictures with my friends.

"Even though it was popular to go for an over-the-top look for prom, I kept my makeup very natural. I curled my eye lashes, put a little blush on the apples of my cheeks and picked a subtle pink gloss that I reapplied throughout the night. As an added touch, I mixed a small bottle of shimmer with coconut oil and applied it on my legs and shoulders for that perfect prom glow. I wish I knew about my Argan Oil then, it would have been the perfect oil to use!"
