Do You Tightline? We're Obsessed with It

You're looking at the lovely Marie T., an expert on Laura Mercier, and someone with the most gorgeous gaze. Ever. Marie says it's thanks to this technique called tightlining, invented by her genius employer that's equal parts skill and products.

We have the products taken care of for you in this set that combines a double-ended brush, a cake liner palette, and a mascara—everything you need to tightline like a pro. We've also called on Marie to channel Laura Mercier to be your tightline coach. You'll want to pay careful attention, because this secret trick adds intensity to the lash line and makes any eye makeup you have on that much better. Here's how.

Step 1: Mix the cake liner by wetting your brush to create a paste. The ideal consistency is that of a paste or shoe polish.

Step 2: Take the brush and place it at the root of the lashes, not inside the eye, which may cause smudging since it's so close to your membrane. Start at the center of the lash line and wiggle color between the roots of the lashes.

Step 3: Work a little to the left and a little to the right, going as far in either direction as you want. You don't have to go from corner to corner to make your eyes sparkle, since you've already concentrated color right above your iris.

Step 4: Repeat on the other eye.

Step 5: Finish with a coat of mascara.

Once you've gotten the hang of this technique, Marie says you can also apply it to create the look of the moment, the cat eye. For a flawless wing, use the Pointed Eye Liner brush with the Cake Eye Liner. Start by drawing a wing tip in the outer corner of your lash line. Use the angle of your lower lash line as a guide for the tilt of the wing tip. Fill in the wing tip using small feather-like strokes working from the outer corner inwards and stop at the center of the lash line. To finish, draw a thin line connecting the inner corner to the center of the lash line. Marie will also take a darker eye shadow (like Coffee Ground or Black Plum) and with a smudge brush, blend along the line to camouflage imperfections and soften the line.

Did you get all that? We didn't say tightlining would be easy, but practice makes perfect. Now, the rest is up you, and we swear, once you start tightlining, you'll never want to stop.
