late to this party but wanted to speak on my own experience.

i got married last fall and did my own makeup. i liked makeup to begin with but didnt feel comfortable with my skills to produce a 'professional' face and thats what i wanted to present on my wedding day.

i went to Youtube. there are sooo many makeup gurus on there who can give you a basic foundation for your look.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. i practiced my makeup everyday after work for MONTHS. i finally decided on my eyeshadow colors about 6 weeks before the wedding. Once i'd nailed down the look, i practiced it over and over. I have hundreds of pictures of me practicing my makeup in all lighting conditions. lol.

on my wedding day, my makeup came out incredible. my bms actually looked into the bathroom to see if i'd snuck in a makeup artist.

i also went with false lash extensions. the lashes really make an impact in pictures. the eye shadows are more for face to face contact. make a point to really emphasize you lashes with either layers of mascara or falsies. if you go the false route, you must practice this several times! a couple rounds won't cut it. you will be so jittery and nervous on the day of that your application really needs to be second nature.

Thanks for your posts! To the first poster, I love what a thorough job you did for your friend. You thought of everything! And to the second poster, yes, that makes sense to have the hair/makeup done on-site (if I decide to have professional help). I'm taking notes on all of this. Keep them coming!

if you opt to have your hair/makeup done professionally, i highly recommend finding someone to come to you. for a friend's wedding, we went to a local salon, got there almost 2 hours early, and then had to fight traffic to get back to the hotel to get changed and over to the church. for my wedding, i was lucky enough to find local stylists that did on-site hair and makeup. it worked out fantastically, since we didn't have to leave the hotel except to get to the church. It just required a little extra time since there were only 2 stylists and 4 heads of hair, but i'd rather spend extra time watching everyone get made up, than fretting in traffic about being late!

I've done both! I did my own makeup for my wedding, and then did a friend's makeup for hers. I am WAY more into makeup than my friend, but the time I did her makeup was the first time I did anyone else's....

We shopped together for her wedding makeup, go samples (yay sephora for samples!, looked at makeup in magazines, etc, then finally I did 3 "run thrus" on her. The third time I had my hubby take some pictures to see how the makeup looked-I had my friend wear a white Tshirt, and we did shots outside around the same time that her wedding was schedule for.

If I must say so, it turned out great, plus we had a blast! My friend and I really got to bond even more, and now my former makeup newbie/novice/natural friend is a huge sephora addict like me. :-)
